Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Schools in Louisiana and Tulane University Without going into details it may be said that all education that prepares for active life can be graded into Primary, Secondary, Collegiate and University education, the lastinclud ing professional studies. These grades rest upon each other in regular sequence, and any attempt to evade or skip this natural succession is surely punished by'an imperfect and fragmentary preparation, which shows itself in weakness somewhere in later life. The house must be built upon a rock or it will not stand. Education must rest upon a solid basis of thorough preparation, of early discipline, of a continuous advance, or it will lack that essential something which makes the all-round man so formidable to every opponent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a High School Program The public is devoting more and more of its treasure to the school, particularly to the high school. The high school principal has a responsibility for the economy and efficiency of his school organization. Care and economy mean more funds for education. We might raise salaries on what is now wasted. In industry, with rising labor costs has come greater attention to individual economies. The school cannot escape the tendency. Does the high school principal know whether or not he is getting full efficiency from his organization? Is the work evenly divided? Are teachers overworked or underworked? Are pupil divisions evenly constructed? Are program difficulties solved? The high school principal needs in his equipment the engineers capacity. He is an educational engineer. The high school program, indeed, is an engineering problem. No system of making a high school program on the trial-and-error method is defensible. From mathematical reasons it must be faulty. No purely mechanical method of making a program is adequate, for the result is wrong and the pupils and teachers are the necessary victims. A high school program must be scientifically constructed if it is to be accepted as adequate to the situation presented. Poor high school programs are responsible today for great waste of money in the employment of unnecessary teachers, in the uneven distribution of work, in preventing pupils' range of choice of subjects, and in unnecessary worry and confusion throughout the organization. The professionally trained high school principal can easily find a way out of the program difficulties. The struggle against this universal problem has developed some program geniuses, and their discoveries are not esoteric but open and free to those who wish to adopt their ideas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hellenian, 1900, Vol. 11 On leaving college he immediately entered on his chosen work of edu cation, being elected principal of the Goldsboro High School. In 188 5, he assumed the superintendency of the Goldsboro Graded School which, by skillful organization he made prominent among North Carolina's public schools. From 1885 to 1887 he held the prominent position of president of the North Carolina Teachers' Assembly. In 1889, as State Institute Con ductor, he began a three-years' canvass of the State that resulted in untold good to the cause of education. From 1892-93, he held the chair of History and Literature at the State Normal and Industrial School, which he had done so much to establish, but he resigned this to take the chair of Pedagogy at the University of North Carolina. While occupying this position the task of organizing the University Summer School was imposed upon him. So successful was he in this undertaking that the school is now one of the best of its kind in the whole country and has made for itself a distinctive place among the State's educational institutions. In 1896, the president's chair being vacated by Dr. Winston, the trus tees unanimously elected him to fill the place. The choice gave great satis faction to all sections, parties and professions throughout the State. Soon after his election the honorary degree of Doctor of Common Law was con ferred on him by the University of the South. Dr. Alderman has been at the head of the University now for four years. During this time the same vigor in administration and skill in organization that have characterized his previous work have been evident. Among the great educators of the country, Dr. Alderman is not without honor. He is an honorary member of the Maryland Historical Society, and a member of the National Education Association author of the Life of William Hooper, and A Brief History of North Carolina. In June, 1899, the Tulane University of Louisiana, conferred upon him the degree of LL. D. And in April, 1900, called him to the presidency, made vacant by the death of Colonel William Preston johnston. As president of the University of North Carolina, Dr. Alderman has taken rank with the very best college presidents of America. Under his management there has been a steady increase in the number of students, the income of the University, and the number of volumes in the library. Many of the stately old dormi tories of earlier days have been remodeled and beautified without destroying their historic effect the Alumni and Law Buildings have been completed, and the Library Building renovated and refurnished. The greatest tribute to his worth as an executive is his creation of a wonderful unity of purpose and action among the Faculty; a high college spirit among the students. And an unflinching faith in his ability to lead to greater things on the part of the Faculty, students and trustees. They differ much from those of the elementary school below and those of the college, university, or technical school above. The experience of the last half century has revealed them; it has also developed a considerable body of knowledge concerning them, which every high school teacher should possess before entering upon his work. This knowledge will not solve all his individual problems, but it should at least make him aware of their existence and suggest the solution which he must himself work out. In gathering material he is under obligations for gener ous responses by educators in all parts of the country who have furnished him with their latest high school programs of studies. He is under special obligations to Mr. John Calvin Hanna, Supervisor of High Schools Of the State of Illinois, who has written the illuminating introduction, to Professor William Estabrook Chancellor, of the College of Wooster, who has read the manuscript and made valuable suggestions, and to Dr. Charles Hughes Johnston, of the University of Illinois, who has supplied an advance copy of the new terminology. The number of titles has been materially increased to include the suggestions of many high-school teachers, specialists in the Bureau of Education, high-school librarians, public librarians, and commission workers. The suggestions and demands of teachers of special departments for comprehensive lists on particular subjects have been somewhat insistent, and the result is that some divisions, notably agriculture, are out Of proportion to the rest Of the list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of High-School Curricula in the North Central States From 1860 to 1918 The purpose of this study is to trace the development of high-school curricula in the North Central states from 1860 to 1900. An introductory chapter presents a brief account of the early high schools. It furnishes a background for a treatment of the development of curricula in the geographical area indicated in the title. The monograph is divided into three Parts. Parts I and II are devoted to the period 1860-1900. Part III covers the period 1900- 1918. Part I contains a treatment of subjects and their organization into curricula. Part II is devoted to the subject matter of the various fields and subjects. Part III deals with subjects and subject matter, a chapter being devoted to each. A few authorities are cited but tabulations and discussions are for the most part based upon data secured from original sources. These sources are chiefly published courses of study and textbooks. Some of the material was made available for use by the libraries of the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, Oberlin College, and Cornell College. A considerable portion of it, however, was widely scattered, particularly the published courses of study, and had to be collected from the schools throughout the area. In selecting curricula for purposes of display and tabulation, an effort was made to secure those which would fairly represent prevailing practices. Small schools have somewhat less proportional representation than medium size and large ones for the reason that copies of curricula used in the small school have in many cases not been preserved. d104books for reference have been selected on the basis of their general use as shown by lists displayed in published courses of study. For purposes of tabulation, the period 1860-1900 has been divided into eight units of five years each. In Part III two units were selected, 1906-1910 and 1911-1918. This has been done to determine as accurately as possible the dates at which significant changes took place. In the treatment of subjects, organization of curricula and subject matter, the facts are presented as revealed by the sources consulted. No attempt has been made to give connected accounts of particular schools. Peculiarities of individual schools have been noted but conclusions deal with general practices and tendencies. It is possible for the enrolment to be so small that the number found in the Senior class who will go to college is insufficient to justify either the high school or college in attempt ing to coordinate their work. Small enrolment means that classes must be small, which condition quickly places a limit on the number of elective courses or units which can be provided in the high school. On the other hand the small high school may mean a more narrowly selected group of students with a narrower range of interests and abilities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Development of the New York State High School System Since this general survey was made, only one exhaustive and intensive study has appeared, dealing with a considerable number of schools. This is the monograph of Dr Alexander Inglis, The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts. Doctor Inglis limited his study largely to the period previous to 1860 and, aside from indicating the progress of legislation in the state, he established conclusively the number of schools founded in that period and the nature of the curriculum. This was made possible by a detailed research through the local town records and reports of school committees which in Massachusetts have been preserved with great care.
