Mark off on the edge of a piece of paper a distance equal to the length of the line A B (Fig. 1). Experiment 2. Draw a line the length of the distance laid off on the edge of the paper. Which of your senses do you use in determining the equality of the lengths? Experiment 3. Lay the edge of the paper with the length A B marked off on it alongside C D and by moving it along thus: find how many times the length of C D contains that of A B. How many times would the length of C D contain that of A B if A B were (a) one-half, (b) one-third, (c) three-fourths its present length? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Physical Science, Vol. 1: Revised Edition, for Continuation Classes in Public Schools and Lower School Classes in Secondary Schools The High School Physical Science, Part I, has been revised with the purpose of meeting the requirements of the new curriculum. The method of treatment, which has met with the general approval of teachers of elementary science, has been retained. While the laboratory course is the special feature of the work, an attempt has been made to combine with it a concise and logical outline of the fundamental principles of the subject. The scientific method and habit of enquiry acquired through laboratory practice is most valuable, but experience shows that the knowledge gained by beginners from laboratory work alone is inaccurate and fragmentary. The effort has been made to meet the situation by giving formulated statements of the more important principles, and, at the same time, by supplying abundant material for original investigation in connection with the development and application of the principles. Care has been taken to select simple and typical experiments which can be performed by the pupils themselves with inexpensive apparatus. While most of the experiments are qualitative, a number of simple quantitative determinations are included to lead the student to appreciate the more exact methods of scientific research, and to introduce him to the method of representing résults graphically. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A middle school physical science textbook complete with a video of the power point lessons, links to experiments, and a flash card review. This is volume one of a planned three volume set. Volume one covers the scientific method, matter and energy. Volume two will cover physics (motion, gravity, pressure, etc) and chemistry (chemical bonding, acids-bases, etc). Volume three will cover everything else (waves, pseudo-science, etc). This is intended to be a middle school level physical science textbook, but it is not written as one. It is easy to understand and funny. It is not only targeted at a middle school student but sounds like one wrote it. A lot of immature examples are used, kids like this. This is not your normal textbook, it is fun to read, but includes all the vocabulary and complex ideas. The current textbooks are full of boring information but they are useless if no one wants to actually read them. A student will want to read this one, so will an adult. It explains in easy language, complex topics. There are links to demonstrations, experiments, simulations, videos, and funny examples of science. This book is written to make physical science fun, as all science should be. Normally a textbook is written so the teacher can make a lesson from it, this one is the opposite. These are my lessons converted into a textbook. I know the lessons and examples work, so the textbook should also.Since this is an e-book it also includes links to my power point lessons (in video form), links to videos, demonstrations, and simulations. There are a lot of links in each chapter. This is self-published book designed to be an affordable online textbook for middle school or home school children. Volume one covers the Scientific Method, The basics of Matter, and Energy. Table of contentsUnit 1 - What the Heck is science?Chapter 1 - How to think like a scientistChapter 2 - The scientific MethodChapter 3 - Physical Science Chapter 4 - Lab safetyChapter 5 - The controlled experimentUnit 2 - What is MatterChapter 6 - Measuring MatterChapter 7 - AtomsChapter 8 - Combining matter into new stuffChapter 9 - The common states of matterUnit 3 - The Properties of matterChapter 10 - Properties of matterChapter 11 - Changing states of Matter Chapter 12 - Using propertiesUnit 4 - EnergyChapter 13- Forms of energyChapter 14 - Energy transitionsChapter 15 - Energy technologyUnit 5 - Heat Chapter 16- TemperatureChapter 17- HeatChapter 18 - The movement of heat

Book excerpt: Are you interested in a three-dimensional approach to helping your high school physics students learn the practices of science, including constructing explanations and engaging in argument from evidence? By using argument-driven inquiry (ADI) for high school physics lab instruction, you can do just that. Argument-Driven Inquiry in Physics, Volume 2 provides the information and instructional materials you need to start using this method right away for electricity and magnetism investigations. The book is a one-stop source of expertise, advice, and lessons to help physics students work the way scientists do. The book is divided into three parts: * An introduction to argument-driven inquiry and how to use the labs. You' ll learn about the stages of ADI, from question identification, data analysis, and argument development and evaluation to double-blind peer review and report revision. * A well-organized series of 17 field-tested labs designed to be much more authentic for instruction than traditional laboratory activities. The labs cover a variety of topics, including electrostatics; electric current, capacitors, resistors, and circuits; and magnetic fields and electromagnetism. Introduction labs acquaint students with new content. Application labs encourage deeper exploration of the use of a theory, law, or unifying concept. * Helpful appendixes. These range from timeline options to peer-review guides and teacher scoring rubrics-- including ones for AP physics. ADI in Physics, Volume 2 is a follow-up to ADI in Physics, Volume 1: Mechanics Lab Investigations for Grades 9- 12. Both are part of the NSTA Press series for ADI in biology, chemistry, life science, and physical science. The authors understand your time constraints, so they designed the books with easy-to-use lab handouts, student pages, teacher notes, and checkout questions. The labs also support three-dimensional instruction, helping students learn the science practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas found in the Next Generation Science Standards. The labs also support student learning of standards in both algebra- and calculus-based AP Physics courses. In addition, they offer ways for students to develop the disciplinary skills outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Many of today' s high school teachers-- like you-- are seeking new ways to engage students in science practices and help students learn more from lab activities. ADI in Physics, Volume 2 does all of this while also giving your students the chance to practice reading, writing, speaking, and using math in the context of science.
