Book Synopsis Concurrent Enrollment Programs by : Arthur Richard Greenberg
Download or read book Concurrent Enrollment Programs written by Arthur Richard Greenberg and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of concurrent enrollment programs, in which high school students can enroll in college-level courses before graduation and simultaneously receive credit for their diplomas and receive college credit, shows how such programs can address concerns about high school-college articulation and describes several program models in action. Two aspects of articulation are addressed: high school-college curriculum redundancy and the changing demographics of the college population, affecting the appropriateness of many introductory college-level courses. Benefits seen in concurrent enrollment programs include acceleration of progress for students, reduced tuition costs, reassurance for parents concerning their children's ability to handle college-level academic responsibilities, relief of high school senior ennui, productive interaction between high schools and colleges, improved high school faculty status, enhanced high school standing, facilitated student recruitment, grant opportunities, school-college faculty interaction, enhanced college-community relations, and social equity. Programs at Syracuse University (New York), Florida International University, Kingsborough Community College (New York), LaGuardia Community College (New York), Seattle University (Washington), and the Minnesota and Florida statewide programs are described. Suggestions for designing, implementing, and evaluating a concurrent enrollment program are given. 19 references. (MSE)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, The American Community College has been the go-to reference for faculty, administrators, trustees, state-level officials, and researchers concerned with the role of community colleges in the American educational system, the services they provide, and their effects on students and surrounding communities. Now in its sixth edition, The American Community College includes a new chapter on student outcomes and accountability; a case for reconceptualizing general education around critical thinking, civic engagement, and sustainable development; and an appendix examining the ascendant for-profit sector. The sixth edition also incorporates expanded analyses of recent trends within the community colleges, including vertical expansion; cross-sector collaboration; student and faculty characteristics; enrollment patterns; revenue generation and state allocation patterns, including performance-based funding; distance learning; and statewide efforts to improve transfer and articulation. In addition, the authors include a response to contemporary criticisms of the institution. Comprehensive in scope, the sixth edition of The American Community College is designed for anyone concerned with the role and purpose of community institutions in American higher education. The descriptions and analyses of each of the institution’s functions can be used by administrators who want to learn about practices that have proven successful at other colleges, curriculum planners involved in program revisions, faculty members seeking ideas for modifying their courses, students preparing for careers in community colleges, and trustees and officials concerned with college policies and student progress and outcomes. Each chapter of the book includes guiding questions for reflection and discussion.

Download or read book The Neglected Majority written by Dale Parnell and published by Washington, D.C. : Community College Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for high school and community college leaders, this book examines a number of issues related to student success, learning continuity, individual differences, and the lack of community college involvement in secondary education; and offers a proposal for increasing high school/community college program cooperation and coordination. After chapter I examines some dilemmas faced by educators in defining excellence, chapter II looks at the effects of technological, educational, and socio-economic tensions on educational excellence. Chapter III highlights such barriers to excellence as unfocused learning, loss of continuity in learning, failure to accommodate individual differences, and unfounded images about learning. Chapter IV offers a model of careers education as a learner-centered bridge between subject-matter disciplines and the competencies required by modern life. In chapter V, the "Opportunity with Excellence" philosophy is proposed as the basis for the community college mission, and a policy statement for the associate degree is presented as developed by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges. After chapter VI underscores the importance of cooperation and coordination between the high school and the community college, offering examples of successful efforts around the nation, chapter VII delineates the assumptions and characteristics of a 2 + 2 Tech-Prep/Associate Degree Program, which blends the liberal and practical arts in a coordinated program that begins during the last 2 years of high school and culminates with an associate degree. Finally, suggestions for cultivating excellence are presented. (LAL)
