Book Synopsis American Urban Architecture by : Wayne Attoe
Download or read book American Urban Architecture written by Wayne Attoe and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attoe and Logan propose a specifically American theory of urban design. Arguing that theories of urban design, especially theories about the remaking of cities, have been largely European in origin and thus of questionable value in American contexts, the authors see the characteristic features of American cities--the grid, loft buildings, distinctive styling, and so forth--as opportunities for a specifically American urbanism.

Book Synopsis New Suburbanism: Sustainable Tall Building Development by : Kheir Al-Kodmany
Download or read book New Suburbanism: Sustainable Tall Building Development written by Kheir Al-Kodmany and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the anticipated future growth in the United States will take place in suburbia. The critical challenge is how to accommodate this growth in a sustainable and resilient manner. This book explores the role of suburban tall as a viable, sustainable alternative to continued suburban sprawl. It identifies 10 spatial patterns in which tall buildings have been integrated into the American suburbs. The study concludes that the Tall Building and Transit-Oriented-Development (TB-TOD) model is the most appropriate to promote sustainable suburbanism. The findings are based on analyzing over 300 projects in 24 suburban communities within three major metropolitan areas including: Washington, DC, Miami, Florida, and Chicago, Illinois. The book furnishes planning strategies that address the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainable tall building development. It also discusses sustainable architectural design and site planning strategies and provides case studies of sustainable tall buildings that were successfully integrated into suburban settings.

Book Synopsis Zev's Los Angeles by : Zev Yaroslavsky
Download or read book Zev's Los Angeles written by Zev Yaroslavsky and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A LA Times Bestseller “…[A] compelling history of our city’s last half century, as conveyed through the life of one of our most impactful leaders. …” — Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass This is the story of Zev Yaroslavsky, the son of Ukrainian Jews who immigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. His memoir charts the journey of a young social activist who battled to free Soviet Jews before becoming one of the most consequential elected officials in Southern California. Fiercely independent, he combined an activist’s passion with a seasoned politician’s skill to challenge the region’s power brokers. He fought the Los Angeles Police Department’s excessive force and political spying policies, led the effort to ban local taxes from funding the 1984 Olympics, teamed with President Clinton to avert a catastrophic county bankruptcy, helped develop L.A.’s modern transit system, won a bruising battle with real estate interests to save the Santa Monica Mountains from rapacious development, and was pivotal in the development of Walt Disney Concert Hall and the modernization of the iconic Hollywood Bowl. “I may be part of the establishment,” he said on the day he was first sworn into office, “but the establishment is not part of me.”

Download or read book Urban Flotsam written by Raoul Bunschoten and published by 010 Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manner in which global trends affect cities and increase instability is like letting a rising river loose on a house. Global trends create urban flotsam that forms a second skin of the earth. How is this visible and how can it be useful in urban planning? This book answers questions through examples. It contains a manifesto for a general debate of issues, a poetic setting of the theme of the second skin and case studies undertaken in urban situations. With splendid photographs and magnificent conceptual maps and diagrams, the book balances between urban theory, urban pedagogy and urban poetry.

Download or read book Phnom Penh written by Milton E. Osborne and published by Signal Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long neglected by Western travellers, Phnom Penh became Cambodias permanent capital in 1866. It has been home to Iberian missionaries and French colonialists, with a stunning mix of traditional palaces, Buddhist temples and transplanted French architecture. In the 1960s Phnom Penh deserved its reputation as the most attractive city in Southeast Asia. But after 1970 all this was to change, and a terrible civil war was followed by the Khmer Rouges capture of the city in 1975. Since the defeat of Pol Pot in 1979, Phnom Penh has slowly recovered, once again attracting perceptive travellers.
Download or read book Inverse Utopia written by Albert Pope and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse Utopia looks at urbanism from the perspective of modernism and postmodernism, as well as at how commercialization has transformed the modern city. In his earlier book Ladders (1997), the author described the emergence of the cul-de-sac as a typical manifestation of this trend. In this new book, Inverse Utopia, Pope argues for the development of architectural and urban forms that respond to contemporary ecological and social challenges. The title refers to a statement by the philosopher Günther Anders: whereas utopians are unable to make the things they imagine, others are unable to imagine the things they make. This book is a stand-alone volume but may be read as a sequel to Ladders.
