Book excerpt: Over recent years electronic spectroscopy has developed significantly, with key applications in atmospheric chemistry, astrophysics and astrochemistry. High Resolution Electronic Spectroscopy of Small Molecules explores both theoretical and experimental approaches to understanding the electronic spectra of small molecules, and explains how this information translates to practice. Professors Geoffrey Duxbury and Alexander Alijah present the links between spectroscopy and photochemistry, and discuss theoretical treatments of the interaction between different electronic states. They provide a thorough discussion of experimental techniques, and explore practical applications. This book will be an indispensable reference for graduate students and researchers in physics and chemistry working on theoretical and practical aspects of electronic spectra, as well as atmospheric scientists, photochemists, kineticists and professional spectroscopists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reviews the results of vibration-rotational spectroscopy of molecules obtained recently by combining modern computational methods of quantum chemistry with the new techniques of high-resolution rotational and vibration-rotational spectroscopy. It shows for example that the tunneling vibration-rotational spectroscopy of the van der Waals complexes provides a new look at intermolecular forces while the high precision and sensitivity of the submillimeter-wave and Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy make it possible to study complex rotational spectra of molecules in excited vibrational states. New results of high level ab initio quantum chemical computations of vibrational and rotational energy levels and dipole moment functions of unusual molecules will be discussed together with the recent discovery of clustering of energy levels in asymmetric tops. Group theoretical analysis of floppy molecules, especially the tunneling effects in nonrigid molecules, will also be discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is fifteen years since Walker and Straw wrote the first edition of 'Spectroscopy' and considerable developments have taken place during that time in all fields of this expanding subject. In atomic spectroscopy, for example, where the principles required in a student text have been laid down for many years, there have been advances in optical pumping and double resonance which cannot be neglected at undergraduate level. In addition, nuclear quadrupole resonance (n.q.f.) and far infrared spectroscopy now merit separate chapters while addtional chapters dealing with Mbssbauer spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and group theory are an essential requisite for any modern spectroscopy textbook. When the idea for a new edition of Spectroscopy was first discussed it quickly became clear that the task of revision would be an impossible one for two authors working alone. Consequently it was decided that the new edition be planned and co-ordinated by two editors who were to invite specialists, each of whom had experience of presenting their subject at an undergraduate level, to contribute a new chapter or to revise extensively an existing chapter. In this manner a proper perspective of each topic has been provided without any sacri fice of the essential character and unity of the first edition. The expansion of subject matter has necessitated the division of the complete work into three self contained volumes. Volume I includes atomic, n.m.f., n.q.f., e.s.r. and Mbssbauer spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Excited States of Polyatomic Molecules, Volume II focuses on a higher level of activity in vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. This book explores the Rydberg states in atoms and molecules. Comprised of five chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the two-center unsaturated molecules that usually display sharp Rydberg transitions originating with the pi electrons. This book then discusses the unsaturated double bond that adds another dimension to the spectrum. Other chapters explore the optical spectrum of the amide group, which is the basic chromophoric unit in polypeptides. This text further discusses the all-electron calculations of the electronic structure of the amide group that is performed in Gaussian orbital basis sets. This book considers as well the prominent characteristic of Rydberg excitations in benzene. The final chapter deals with the biological molecules that are polyfunctional in general. Analytical chemists, photochemists, molecular spectroscopists, and researchers will find this book extremely useful.

Book excerpt: "Imagination and shrewd guesswork are powerful instruments for acquiring scientific knowledge . . . " 1. H. van't Hoff The last decades have witnessed a rapid growth of quantum chemistry and a tremendous increase in the number of very accurate ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of molecules yielding results of admirable accuracy. This dramatic progress has opened a new stage in the quantum mechanical description of matter at the molecular level. In the first place, highly accurate results provide severe tests of the quantum mecha nics. Secondly, modern quantitative computational ab initio methods can be synergetically combined with various experimen tal techniques thus enabling precise numerical characterization of molecular properties better than ever anticipated earlier. However, the role of theory is not exhausted in disclosing the fundamental laws of Nature and production of ever increasing sets of data of high accuracy. It has to provide additionally a means of systematization, recognition of regularities, and ratio nalization of the myriads of established facts avoiding in this way complete chaos. Additional problems are represented by molecular wavefunctions provided by the modern high-level computational quantum chemistry methods. They involve, in principle, all the information on molecular system, but they are so immensely complex that can not be immediately understood in simple and physically meaningful terms. Both of these aspects, categorization and interpretation, call for conceptual models which should be preferably pictorial, transparent, intuitively appealing and well-founded, being sometimes useful for semi quantitative purposes.
