Book excerpt: We demonstrate solar spectra from a novel interferometric method for compact broadband high-resolution spectroscopy. The spectral interferometer (SI) is a hybrid instrument that uses a spectrometer to externally disperse the output of a fixed-delay interferometer. It also has been called an externally dispersed interferometer (EDI). The interferometer can be used with linear spectrometers for imaging spectroscopy or with echelle spectrometers for very broad-band coverage. EDI's heterodyning technique enhances the spectrometer's response to high spectral-density features, increasing the effective resolution by factors of several while retaining its bandwidth. The method is extremely robust to instrumental insults such as focal spot size or displacement. The EDI uses no moving parts, such as purely interferometric FTS spectrometers, and can cover a much wider simultaneous bandpass than other internally dispersed interferometers (e.g. HHS or SHS).

Book excerpt: Metallic, semiconducting and dielectric nanoparticles form outstanding tools for localizing light on the nanoscale. Their optical shape resonances confine light in certain localized modes and in spectral regions. Often, the lifetimes of the optical resonance of those particles are so short, in the range of few femtoseconds, that direct time-resolved measurements of their localized optical near-fields are highly challenging. Here, we employ a scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (sSNOM) combined with spectral interferometry to analyze single MAPbI3 perovskite nanoparticles, promising new candidates for nanoscale light sources. Their optical spectra are expected to feature distinct Fano resonances, arising from the coupling of excitons to the Mie resonances of the particles. We provide direct evidence for these Fano resonances by measuring amplitude and phase of their local optical near-field with high spatial and spectral resolution.

Book excerpt: A method of measuring the spectral properties of broadband waves that combines interferometry with a wavelength disperser having many spectral channels to produce a fringing spectrum. Spectral mapping, Doppler shifts, metrology of angles, distances and secondary effects such as temperature, pressure, and acceleration which change an interferometer cavity length can be measured accurately by a compact instrument using broadband illumination. Broadband illumination avoids the fringe skip ambiguities of monochromatic waves. The interferometer provides arbitrarily high spectral resolution, simple instrument response, compactness, low cost, high field of view and high efficiency. The inclusion of a disperser increases fringe visibility and signal to noise ratio over an interferometer used alone for broadband waves. The fringing spectrum is represented as a wavelength dependent 2-d vector, which describes the fringe amplitude and phase. Vector mathematics such as generalized dot products rapidly computes average broadband phase shifts to high accuracy. A Moire effect between the interferometer's sinusoidal transmission and the illumination heterodynes high resolution spectral detail to low spectral detail, allowing the use of a low resolution disperser. Multiple parallel interferometer cavities of fixed delay allow the instantaneous mapping of a spectrum, with an instrument more compact for the same spectral resolution than a conventional dispersive spectrometer, and not requiring a scanning delay.

Book excerpt: "The light collecting apertures of space telescopes are currently limited in part by the size and weight restrictions of launch vehicles, ultimately limiting the spatial resolution that can be achieved by the observatory. A technique that can overcome these limitations and provide superior spatial resolution is interferometric imaging, whereby multiple small telescopes can be combined to produce a spatial resolution comparable to a much larger monolithic telescope. In astronomy, the spectrum of the sources in the scene are crucial to understanding the material composition of the sources. So, the ultimate goal is to have high-spatial-resolution imagery and obtain sufficient spectral resolution for all points in the scene. This goal can be accomplished through spatiospectral interferometric imaging, which combines the aperture synthesis aspects of a Michelson stellar interferometer with the spectral capabilities of Fourier transform spectroscopy. Spatio-spectral interferometric imaging can be extended to a wide-field imaging modality, which increases the collecting efficiency of the technique. This is the basis for NASA's Wide-field Imaging Interferometry Testbed (WIIT). For such an interferometer, there are two light collecting apertures separated by a variable distance known as the baseline length. The optical path in one of the arms of the interferometer is variable, while the other path delay is fixed. The beams from both apertures are subsequently combined and imaged onto a detector. For a fixed baseline length, the result is many low-spatial-resolution images at a slew of optical path differences, and the process is repeated for many different baseline lengths and orientations. Image processing and synthesis techniques are required to reduce the large dataset into a single high-spatial-resolution hyperspectral image. Our contributions to spatio-spectral interferometry include various aspects of theory, simulation, image synthesis, and processing of experimental data, with the end goal of better understanding the nature of the technique. We present the theory behind the measurement model for spatio-spectral interferometry, as well as the direct approach to image synthesis. We have developed a pipeline to preprocess experimental data to remove unwanted signatures in the data and register all image measurements to a single orientation, which leverages information about the optical system's point spread function. In an experimental setup, such as WIIT, the reference frame for the path difference measured for each baseline is unknown and must be accounted for. To overcome this obstacle, we created a phase referencing technique that leverages point sources within the scene of known separation in order to recover unknown information regarding the measurements in a laboratory setting. We also provide a method that allows for the measurement of spatially and spectrally complicated scenes with WIIT by decomposing them prior to scene projection"--Pages xii-xiii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest for high resolution has preoccupied radio astronomers ever since radio waves were first detected from space fifty years ago. This venture was par ticularly stimulated by the discovery of quasars, and led to the development of interferometer techniques using baselines of transglobal dimensions. These meth ods have become known as Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Arrays of radio telescopes situated all over the Earth (or even in space) are regularly used for researches in radio astronomy, reaching resolutions as small as a fraction of a milli arcsecond. The technique also allows the measurement of the positions of the radio telescopes to a few millimeters and so VLBI has become a major tool in geodesy and the study of the rotation of the Earth. VLBI has now passed the pioneer stage and is becoming a standard facility available to astronomers and geodesists, requiring the coordination of the operations of indpendently owned radio telescopes around the world. In Europe observatories from England, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Sweden and The Netherlands are coordinated in their VLBI activity by the European VLBI Network Consortium (EVN). The Programme Committee of the EVN allocates time to scientific projects on a routine basis three times a year. The Unites States has a similar arrangement of a network of independent radio observatories, and joint experiments using 'Global Network' are often made.

Book excerpt: The 1990s are proving to be a very exciting p&iod for high angular resolution astronomy. At radio wavelengths a combination of new array instruments and pow erful imaging algorithms have generated images of unprecedented resolution and quality. In the optical and infrared, the great technical difficulties associated with constructing separated-aperture interferometers have been largely overcome, and many new instruments are now operating or are being developed. As these pro grams start to produce observational results they will be able to draw extensively on the experience gained by the radio-interferometry community. Thus it seemed that the time was ripe for a meeting which would bring together workers from all wavelength ranges to discuss the details of the science and art of "Very High Angular Resolution Imaging" . While the main emphasis of Symposium No. 158 was on high resolution tech niques from the radio, mm-wave, infrared and optical bands, it also provided an opportunity for presentation of astronomical results from these techniques. As well as giving our colleagues from the Northern Hemisphere a break from midwinter, the location of the Symposium in Australia recognised the continuing development of astronomical interferometry in this country, especially the recent completion of the Australia Telescope radio array, and the progress toward com missioning of the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer. A number of the par ticipants visited these instruments during the post-symposium tour.

Book excerpt: We describe the use of Externally Dispersed Interferometry (EDI) for high-resolution absorption spectroscopy. By adding a small fixed-delay interferometer to a dispersive spectrograph, a precise fiducial grid in wavelength is created over the entire spectrograph bandwidth. The fiducial grid interacts with narrow spectral features in the input spectrum to create a moire pattern. EDI uses the moire pattern to obtain new information about the spectra that is otherwise unavailable, thereby improving spectrograph performance. We describe the theory and practice of EDI instruments and demonstrate improvements in the spectral resolution of conventional spectrographs by a factor of 2 to 6. The improvement of spectral resolution offered by EDI can benefit space instruments by reducing spectrograph size or increasing instantaneous bandwidth.
