Book excerpt: A hexagonal boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) is an atomic-thick 2D material that exhibits many interesting properties such as high chemical stability and excellent mechanical and thermal properties. In Chapter One, the authors introduce two methods for the exfoliation of BNNS from hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Then, methodologies for the surface functionalisation and nanocomposite construction are demonstrated by two BNNS based nanocomposites. The catalytic performance of the BNNS based nanocomposites is also evaluated and discussed in detail. Chapter two evaluates the formation of rolled hexagonal boron nitride nano-sheets (h-BN nanoscrolls) on their unique morphology, magnetic properties and applications. Due to the high chemical and thermal stabilities, as well as atomically smooth surfaces with free of dangling bonds, hBN has been used as barriers, passivation and support layers in 2D electronic devices, to maximise the electrical and optical characterisation of 2D materials. However, there still remains a challenge in obtaining large-area and high-quality hBN film for real 2D electronic devices. Chapter Three focuses on chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a promising method to overcome these limitations. Chapter Four discusses how a boron doped armchair graphene ribbon has been shown by cyclic voltammetry to be a potential catalyst to replace platinum, however the reaction catalysed was not identified. The authors use density functional calculations to show the reaction catalysed is likely dissociation of HO2. Chapter Five reveals a novel and industrially feasible route to incorporate boron nitride nanoparticles (BNNPs) in radiation-shielding aerospace structural materials. Chapter Six deals with the preparation and characterisation of boron nitride nanotube (BNNT)-reinforced biopolyester matrices. The morphology, hydrophilicity, biodegradability, cytotoxicity, thermal, mechanical, tribological and antibacterial properties of the resulting nanocomposites are discussed in detail. Chapter Seven presents theoretical estimations regarding the compressive buckling response of single walled boron nitride nanotubes (SWBNNTs), which have a similar crystal structure as single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Moreover, SWBNNTs have excellent mechanical, insulating and dielectric properties. Finally, Chapter Eight shows how the different exchange mechanisms can be distinguished and measured by studying solid films where part of the 3He is replaced by immobile Ne atoms. The authors also show how the formation energy of vacancies and vacancy tunneling frequency can be obtained from NMR studies at high temperature.

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents a study on the use of a radio frequency inductively coupled thermal plasma (RF-ICP) system coupled to a conical reactor in order to generate boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) and boron carbon nitride nanosheets (BCNNS) and provide extended materials characterization. BNNS are analogous to graphene in their two-dimensional (2D) structures consisting of boron and nitrogen atoms replacing the carbon atoms in the stacked hexagonal sheet-like structures. Contrary to graphene, which is electrically conductive, BNNS is an insulator with a wide energy band gap. Two routes for generating the BNNS powder structures are described in the thesis, one based on heterogeneous nucleation and growth, and the other through homogeneous nucleation. In the first scenario of BNNS generation, the 2D BNNS structures are synthesized from relatively large boron particles and nitrogen gas. The synthesis is carried out in argon plasma conditions. With these precursors, BNNS structures nucleate and grow heterogeneously on the boron particles following a particle spheroidization process. The growth, which follows a base-growth mechanism, starts as BN nanowalls and grow further upon collisions of active nitrogen species on the boron liquid layer of the particles. The 'height' of these BN nanowalls from the boron particle can be controlled to some extent by varying the operating pressure of the system. The nanowall growth itself is made at the expense of the boron particle which feeds the BNNS nanowall with boron. At the optimum pressure, the formation of the BN phase is maximized, while lower or higher pressures are minimizing the formation of the BN phase. In general, the overall yield is low but improves upon the increase of the nitrogen gas loading in the plasma system at the optimum pressure.The second BNNS synthesis route follows homogeneous nucleation and growth of the material involving solid ammonia borane and nitrogen gas as the precursors. Ammonia borane melts, vaporizes and dissociates rapidly in the plasma zone. Then, clusters of BxNyHz nucleate to form particles of critical sizes that extend laterally while releasing H2. A very good control over the dimensions of the sheets as well as the overall purity of the product is achieved through varying the operating pressure. At the optimum pressure, the product exhibits a very high purity. Below the optimum pressure, the sheets are smaller in size but with practically the same thickness. At these pressures, the purity of product is compromised by the formation of BNH-based polymers. Operating above the optimum pressure results in increasing the sheet size and thickness. However, this comes at the cost of forming large boron particles as contaminants.Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations for the heterogeneous process (B particles and N2 gas) predict that the temperature of BN nucleation and growth in all pressure cases are very close. However, the formation of a liquid boron phase on the boron particles is necessary for BNNS growth. It is proposed in this case that B(liq), B, N, N2, and BN are the major precursors for the BNNS growth. The homogeneous formation of BNNS takes place within very similar temperature ranges. However, liquid boron is not a prerequisite. Major precursors in this process are BN, N, NH, BH, and BxNyHz. Computational fluid dynamic simulations are used to estimate the axial cooling rates and residence times in all the pressure scenarios. It has been speculated that the deviation from certain values of these parameters leads to the controllability over the sheets dimensions and the overall purity of the products"--

Book excerpt: The synthesis of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) nanoparticles is examined experimentally by introducing borane ammonia precursor into a thermal plasma oriented in a stagnation point geometry, where nanoparticles are formed in the flow field upon reaching a cold substrate. The quasi-one dimensional flow field allows for correlating the plasma temperature and residence time to the final particle phase, morphology, size, and purity. Constant temperature and residence time cases are studied to assess the parameter's affect on the resulting particle characteristics. The as-synthesized nanoparticles are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Cubic structured particles are synthesized at plasma temperatures of 3000-8000K and precursor decomposition times [greater than or equal to symbol]0.030s. The highest purity samples are produced at a plasma temperature and residence time of 6500K and 0.075s, respectively. Samples with lower c-BN content are observed with higher percentages of hexagonal and amorphous phases. The particle morphology shifts from spherical agglomerates to faceted shapes as c-BN purity increases. Also, particle size undergoes an increase in nominal size. The resulting phase and purity is proposed to be governed by growth mechanisms that result in high-energy particle-particle interactions where the energy transferred is sufficient for atomic re-alignment into a denser phase.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The popularity of boron nitride nanomaterials for their application in areas like electronics, photovoltaic, biomedical, automobile, and so on has increased in the recent era. Some unique properties make BNNTs outstanding for biomedical and photovoltaic applications, such as their optical transparency, electrical insulation, and biological compatibility. Hence large-scale synthesis of high-purity small-diameter BNNTs is required. On the other hand, research on the origin of excitation-dependent fluorescence (EDF) in BN dots is in its infancy. So, in this dissertation, we studied the growth mechanism of high-purity BNNTs with diameters smaller than 30nm. Additionally, we synthesized two different types of BN dots [sonication-assisted solvothermal (ss) BN dots and liquid nitrogen (LN) exfoliated BN dots], and studied their fluorescent properties. For the first time, we exploited the EDF property of the ss BN dots for solar cells. Here, we define ss BN dots as a pseudo-core/shell structure of DMA-CO and BN nanosheets and use them as the solar absorber (active layers, AL) to yield an efficiency of 1.51%. Our work is the first demonstration using biological and environmentally friendly colloidal nanomaterials for solar cells. In addition, we determined, for the first time, the biocompatible doses of ss BN dots for use in live HeLa cells. We found ss BN dots are suitable for live cell staining at doses below
