Book excerpt: The present thesis constitutes a set of experimental studies on the effect of high pressures on single wall carbon nanotubes, individualized, closed or open, therefore empty or filled with water. High-pressure techniques and Raman spectroscopy were combined to study the radial collapse, as well to probe the pressure-induced modifications. Chirality-resolved pressure derivatives were obtained for the radial breathing modes (RBM). The RBM of water-filled could be observed at pressures higher than those of empty. After a high-pressure cycle, empty nanotubes of larger diameters were not detectable anymore, while sub nanometric diameter ones became filled with water. Such observations suggest that thinner nanotubes have better pressure-stability, which is increased upon water filling. An unusual response of the (7,2) nanotube suggests that the chirality may have also an important role on the structural stability for small diameters. The evolution of the tangential modes suggest the onset of radial collapse of empty nanotubes averaging 1.32 nm diameter at about 4 GPa, in agreement with the latest theoretical predictions. These same nanotubes, though water-filled, they collapse at pressures higher than 16 GPa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes are exceptionally interesting from a fundamental research point of view. Many concepts of one-dimensional physics have been verified experimentally such as electron and phonon confinement or the one-dimensional singularities in the density of states; other 1D signatures are still under debate, such as Luttinger-liquid behavior. Carbon nanotubes are chemically stable, mechanically very strong, and conduct electricity. For this reason, they open up new perspectives for various applications, such as nano-transistors in circuits, field-emission displays, artificial muscles, or added reinforcements in alloys. This text is an introduction to the physical concepts needed for investigating carbon nanotubes and other one-dimensional solid-state systems. Written for a wide scientific readership, each chapter consists of an instructive approach to the topic and sustainable ideas for solutions. The former is generally comprehensible for physicists and chemists, while the latter enable the reader to work towards the state of the art in that area. The book gives for the first time a combined theoretical and experimental description of topics like luminescence of carbon nanotubes, Raman scattering, or transport measurements. The theoretical concepts discussed range from the tight-binding approximation, which can be followed by pencil and paper, to first-principles simulations. We emphasize a comprehensive theoretical and experimental understanding of carbon nanotubes including - general concepts for one-dimensional systems - an introduction to the symmetry of nanotubes - textbook models of nanotubes as narrow cylinders - a combination of ab-initio calculations and experiments - luminescence excitation spectroscopy linked to Raman spectroscopy - an introduction to the 1D-transport properties of nanotubes - effects of bundling on the electronic and vibrational properties and - resonance Raman scattering in nanotubes.

Book excerpt: A single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) is a new form of carbon, whose atomic arrangement is equivalent to a graphene sheet rolled into a cylinder in a seamless way. The typical diameter of a SWNT ranges from 0.6 nm to several nm and the typical length ranges from tens of nm to several cm. Due to its small diameter and high aspect ratio, a SWNT has very unique electronic and vibrational properties. The goals of this thesis work are to design and construct a Raman instrument capable of obtaining signals from many different types of individual SWNTs, to develop methods and tools to collect, organize and analyze large amounts of Raman spectra from them, to use resonant Raman spectroscopy to characterize individual SWNTs, and to investigate how their electronic and vibrational properties change under various conditions, such as strain, or different substrate interactions. A high-efficiency widely-tunable Raman instrument is developed for the study of SWNTs. The environmental effects on the electronic and vibrational properties are investigated by suspended SWNTs. Using the high-efficiency Raman instrument, weak optical transitions of metallic SWNTs are found. The effect of strain on the vibrational mode frequencies of SWNTs are studied.

Book excerpt: In many respects, the science of materials has only fully utilized two of its three fundamental tools - the variables of temperature and chemical composition. Pressure, the third fundamental variable altering materials, is in many ways the most remarkable, as it spans some 60 orders of magnitude in the universe. High-pressure science has experienced tremendous growth, particularly in the last few years. With recent developments in static and dynamic compression techniques, extreme pressure and temperature conditions can now be produced and carefully controlled over a wide range. Moreover, a new generation of analytical probes, many based on third-generation synchrotron radiation sources, have been developed and can now be applied for accurate determination of the structural, dynamical, and electronic properties of matter under extreme conditions. Finally, developments in computational techniques and advances in fundamental theory tested against bountiful new experimental results are both deepening our understanding of materials as a whole and guiding subsequent experimental work with new predictions. It was for this reason that this course on high-pressure science was held at the International School of Physics "Enrico Fermi" School in July 2001. Though presented in a physics forum, the title “High-Pressure Phenomena” was chosen to reflect the broad scope of the field and the diversity of recent findings. Indeed, the field spans fundamental physics and chemistry, materials science and technology, the geosciences, planetary science and astrophysics, as well as biology. The highly interdisciplinary character of the field was central to the organization of the school, though the sheer breadth of the field meant that many topics could be treated in only a cursory fashion while others were examined more in depth. The aim of the school was to present the state-of-the-art in techniques used in modern high-pressure research, highlighting those topics where applications of these techniques are currently having a major impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of fullerenes (also known as buckyballs) has generated tremendous excitement and opened up a new field of carbon chemistry. As the first book available on this topic, this volume will be a landmark reference in the field. Because buckyballs are essentially closed hollow cages made up of carbon atoms, they can be manipulated in a variety of ways to yield never-before-seen materials. The balls can, for instance, be doped with atoms or pulled out into tubules and filled with lead to provide properties of high-temperature superconductivity. Researchers can now create their own buckyballs in a process that is almost as simple as making soot, making this research as inexpensive as it is exotic (which has doubtless contributed to its popularity). Researchers anticipate that fullerenes will offer boundless opportunities in the development of new products, drugs and materials. Science of Fullerenes and Carbon Nanotubes introduces materials scientists, chemists, and solid state physicists to the field of fullerenes, and discusses the unique properties and applications. both current and future, of all classes of fullerenes. Key Features * First comprehensive resource on fullerenes and their applications * Provides an introduction to the topic * Presents an extensive discussion of current and future applications of Fullerenes * Covers all classes of fullerenes

Book excerpt: Raman Spectroscopy and its Application in Nanostructures is an original and timely contribution to a very active area of physics and materials science research. This book presents the theoretical and experimental phenomena of Raman spectroscopy, with specialized discussions on the physical fundamentals, new developments and main features in low-dimensional systems of Raman spectroscopy. In recent years physicists, materials scientists and chemists have devoted increasing attention to low-dimensional systems and as Raman spectroscopy can be used to study and analyse such materials as carbon nanotubes, quantum wells, silicon nanowires, etc., it is fast becoming one of the most powerful and sensitive experimental techniques to characterize the qualities of such nanostructures. Recent scientific and technological developments have resulted in the applications of Raman spectroscopy to expand. These developments are vital in providing information for a very broad field of applications: for example in microelectronics, biology, forensics and archaeology. Thus, this book not only introduces these important new branches of Raman spectroscopy from both a theoretical and practical view point, but the resulting effects are fully explored and relevant representative models of Raman spectra are described in-depth with the inclusion of theoretical calculations, when appropriate.

Book excerpt: This work reports the results of two studies which use resonance Raman scattering to evaluate the vibrational properties of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). In the first study, we report an evaluation of second-order combination and over-tone modes in highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), in SWNT bundles, and in isolated SWNTs. We found both dispersive and non-dispersive Raman bands in the range 1650-2100 cm−1, and we show that the appearance and frequency vs. laser energy E[laser] behavior of these features are in agreement with predictions from double resonance Raman theory. In the case of SWNTs, these second-order bands depend on the one-dimensional structure of SWNTs, and, at the single nanotube level, the spectra vary from tube to tube, depending on tube diameter and chirality, and on the energy of the van Hove singularity relative to E[laser]. In the second study, we present a theoretical method of predicting, to within a linear constant [beta], the frequency shift in the Raman features of a SWNT material as the Fermi level is changed by depletion or addition of electrons. This constant is then evaluated for different Raman modes in SWNTs by comparing theoretical predictions to experimental observations by Corio et al., where the Fermi level of SWNT bundles is raised by electrochemical doping and Raman spectra are collected in situ. It is determined that for the G-band of SWNTs, the dependence of frequency on Fermi energy is /[beta][sub]G = 271cm−1 per hole per C-atom for metallic SWNTs with d[sub]f [approximately]= 1.25 ± 0.20nm.

Book excerpt: Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive characterization technique suitable for the study of carbon nanotubes. Differences in the spectral shift of the Raman D and G bands are observed when heating carbon nanotubes through intense photon irradiation and by varying the temperature in a thermostat. These spectral changes in D mode are attributed to the variation of the electronic band structure by excitons creation. The investigation of the influence of doping and photoexcitation on the Raman G and D band of carbon nanotubes show that Raman spectroscopy can be used as a diagnostic tool. The spectral bands broaden and up shifts for nitrogen doped multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The up shift for sulphuric acid doped double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) synthesized from catalytic chemical vapor deposition method (CCVD) is attributed to charge transfer and strain in the lattice. We have combined sulphuric acid doping and high pressure Raman spectroscopy to investigate the properties of DWCNT. The DWCNT doped with different concentrations of sulphuric acid are explored under high pressure suggesting an effect of the molecular ordering around carbon nanotubes at higher acid concentrations. Raman spectra of individual double wall carbon nanotubes on silica show a splitting of the G band due to contributions of the inner and outer tube when using a excitation energy in resonance with the inner metallic tube and outer semiconducting tube. The spectral line widths are comparable to what has been observed for individual single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) or graphene. Increased laser power shifts the G band of the outer tube to higher energies and modifies its line shape.
