More precisely, the Kalman filter gives a linear, unbiased, and min imum error variance recursive algorithm to optimally estimate the unknown state of a dynamic system from noisy data taken at discrete real-time intervals. It has been widely used in many areas of industrial and government applications such as video and laser tracking systems, satellite navigation, ballistic missile trajectory estimation, radar, and fue control. With the recent development of high-speed computers, the Kalman filter has become more use ful even for very complicated real-time applications. lnspite of its importance, the mathematical theory of Kalman filtering and its implications are not well understood even among many applied mathematicians and engineers. In fact, most prac titioners are just told what the filtering algorithms are without knowing why they work so well. One of the main objectives of this text is to disclose this mystery by presenting a fairly thor ough discussion of its mathematical theory and applications to various elementary real-time problems. A very elementary derivation of the filtering equations is fust presented. By assuming that certain matrices are nonsingular, the advantage of this approach is that the optimality of the Kalman filter can be easily understood. Of course these assump tions can be dropped by using the more well known method of orthogonal projection usually known as the innovations approach.

Book excerpt: Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology holds great promise for future navigation systems because of the reduced size and cost of MEMS inertial sensors relative to conventional devices. Current MEMS devices are much less accurate than standard inertial sensors, but they can still be useful. In this thesis, data was recorded from an inexpensive MEMS inertial measurement unit and integrated with GPS measurements using a tightly-coupled Kalman filter. The overall goal of this research is to investigate the usefulness of MEMS sensors for a small, real-time, low-cost INS/GPS integration. A golf cart was used to collect dynamic data, along with a commercial INS/GPS system to provide reference data. This data was then post-processed, and the filter's performance in the position, velocity, and attitude outputs were evaluated by comparing them to the reference system. The important system features of system alignment, bias feedback, and INS resets are described, and the filter's performance is analyzed using its estimate and covariance outputs and comparing them to the true error. Filter residuals are also shown and discussed. The final results show that, with adequate processing available, the INS/GPS filter using the MEMS instruments provides good position, velocity, and attitude results over a period of up to 15 minutes, as long as the data is at least somewhat dynamic. Without vehicle motion, the vehicle yaw state tends to wander excessively, due to the bias and noise of the MEMS gyroscopes. Over a long static period, the filter's position outputs would most likely diverge and become unstable. Recommendations are made to combat this problem, among them to conduct more characterization of the MEMS sensors, and to add GPS velocity measurements as an input to the filter.

Primary emphasis is placed upon determination of the 'best' filter state variable vector and investigation of various measurement rates using external range measurements from a set of 27 non-synchronous satellites. The INI system errors are assumed to be represented by a 44 state linear system model, and the filter operates without benefit of an altimeter. A one-hour INI flight at constant speed and altitude over a great circle path is simulated on the digital computer and filter designs are compared by plotting the system position, velocity, and attitude error covariances versus time. A 15 state filter with weak coupling terms removed is determined to provide the best tradeoff between accuracy and computational burden. Filter performance is compared at 5, 15, 30, 60 and 90 second measurement update rates. Additionally, 'optimal' sequencing of satellite observables is shown to provide improved performance. (Author).
