Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase-Locked and Frequency-Feedback Systems: Principles and Techniques presents the operating principles and methods of design of phase-locked and frequency-feedback systems. This book is divided into 10 chapters that provide step-by-step design procedures and graphical aids, with illustrations bearing on real problems experienced in these systems. This work specifically tackles the application of these systems as FM demodulators with lowered thresholds. Chapters 1 and 2 deal briefly with the elements of linear systems, feedback theory, and noise, providing the minimum background for the material presented in the remainder of the text. Chapter 3 describes the characteristics of the major components that comprise the loops and the performance of the conventional and multi-loop FM demodulators. Chapters 4 to 7 present the basic describing equations and design for the FM feedback (FMFB) and phase-locked loop (PLL). These chapters further illustrate step-by-step design procedures with performance characteristics for low-threshold angle demodulation using typical design examples. Chapter 8 highlights the design principles, which are extended to the design of advanced demodulators featuring demodulation thresholds lower than those of the simple PLL or FMFB. Chapter 9 focuses on digital FM demodulation and PLL applications other than FM demodulation. Lastly, Chapter 10 presents the methods of testing and evaluating loop performance. Undergraduate and graduate level students, as well as practicing engineers, will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades we have witnessed the increasing popularity of the internet of things. The vision of billions of connected objects, able to interact with their environment, is the key driver directing the development of future communication devices. Today, power consumption as well as the cost and size of radios remain some of the key obstacles towards fulfilling this vision. Ultra-Low Power FM-UWB Transceivers for IoT presents the latest developments in the field of low power wireless communication. It promotes the FM-UWB modulation scheme as a candidate for short range communication in different IoT scenarios. The FM-UWB has the potential to provide exactly what is missing today. This spread spectrum technique enables significant reduction in transceiver complexity, making it smaller, cheaper and more energy efficient than most alternative options. The book provides an overview of both circuit-level and architectural techniques used in low power radio design, with a comprehensive study of state-of-the-art examples. It summarizes key theoretical aspects of FM-UWB with a glimpse at potential future research directions. Finally, it gives an insight into a full FM-UWB transceiver design, from system level specifications down to transistor level design, demonstrating the modern power reduction circuit techniques. Ultra-Low Power FM-UWB Transceivers for IoT is a perfect text and reference for engineers working in RF IC design and wireless communication, as well as academic staff and graduate students engaged in low power communication systems research.

Book excerpt: Ultra Wideband (UWB) communications are poised to enable short-range applications, such as remote health monitoring (e-health) and home or office automation. Sensor networks are also suitable candidates for UWB since the low radiated power of the UWB transmitter enables low DC power consumption, yielding long battery life and the possibility to use energy scavenging. Size and cost constraints require a low-complexity approach that allows multiple users to share the same RF bandwidth, and offers robustness to interference, frequency-selective multipath and antenna mismatch. Wideband FM Techniques for Low-Power Wireless Communications presents research and applications that have taken place in UWB Communications over the past years. This book is being published posthumously in agreement with the authors’ former colleagues from both the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) and Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations into the FM threshold phenomenon have resulted in the development of several signal processing techniques that can be implemented at the output of any FM demodulator, including phase lock loop and FM feedback demodulators, to provide improved system performance. These techniques are based on the distinguishing characteristics of the demodulator output noise below threshold. Performance improvement and threshold extension are achieved by operating on the demodulator output signal and noise such that the threshold noise impulses are eliminated. The characteristics of three postdetection threshold extension techniques are evaluated with respect to the ability of such techniques to improve the performance of a phase lock loop demodulator. These techniques include impulse-noise elimination, signal correlation for the detection of impulse noise, and delta modulation signal processing. Experimental results from signal-to-noise ratio data and bit error rate data indicate that a 2- to 3-decibel threshold extension is readily achievable by using the various techniques. This threshold improvement is in addition to the threshold extension that is usually achieved through the use of a phase lock loop demodulator.
