Book excerpt: This book is a collection of carefully reviewed papers presented during the HP-SEE User Forum, the meeting of the High-Performance Computing Infrastructure for South East Europe’s (HP-SEE) Research Communities, held in October 17-19, 2012, in Belgrade, Serbia. HP-SEE aims at supporting and integrating regional HPC infrastructures; implementing solutions for HPC in the region; and making HPC resources available to research communities in SEE, region, which are working in a number of scientific fields with specific needs for massively parallel execution on powerful computing resources. HP-SEE brings together research communities and HPC operators from 14 different countries and enables them to share HPC facilities, software, tools, data and research results, thus fostering collaboration and strengthening the regional and national human network; the project specifically supports research groups in the areas of computational physics, computational chemistry and the life sciences. The contributions presented in this book are organized in four main sections: computational physics; computational chemistry; the life sciences; and scientific computing and HPC operations.

This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercomputing has become an indispensable resource in the digital age, thereby transforming research, businesses and our daily lives. It strongly increases the ability of researchers, industry, SMEs and government to process and analyse large amounts of data. The study demonstrates that the use of supercomputing for industrial and commercial applications in Europe has grown rapidly across many sectors such as automotive, renewable energy and mechanical engineering. To realise this potential, significant public ('cornerstone') investments in strategic HPC infrastructure and services are essential. This is expected to lead to the creation of public value via the growth of high-tech companies and the creation of new ecosystems across Europe. At the same time, new thinking is required about how to optimise the use of HPC infrastructure from a predominantly public good approach to ensure that adequate socio-economic returns are generated. This study analysis the key financing challenges of supercomputing in Europe and provides concrete recommendations on how to overcome the current investment gap in this strategic sector. It provides a new rationale for public and private investment as a basis for improving the conditions for robust and long-term financing.

The text opens with a detailed introduction to the concepts of checkpoint protocols and scheduling algorithms, prediction, replication, silent error detection and correction, together with some application-specific techniques such as ABFT. Emphasis is placed on analytical performance models. This is then followed by a review of general-purpose techniques, including several checkpoint and rollback recovery protocols. Relevant execution scenarios are also evaluated and compared through quantitative models. Features: provides a survey of resilience methods and performance models; examines the various sources for errors and faults in large-scale systems; reviews the spectrum of techniques that can be applied to design a fault-tolerant MPI; investigates different approaches to replication; discusses the challenge of energy consumption of fault-tolerance methods in extreme-scale systems.

Book excerpt: The discussions and plans on all scienti?c, advisory, and political levels to realize an even larger “European Supercomputer” in Germany, where the hardware costs alone will be hundreds of millions Euro – much more than in the past – are getting closer to realization. As part of the strategy, the three national supercomputing centres HLRS (Stuttgart), NIC/JSC (Julic ̈ h) and LRZ (Munich) have formed the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) as a new virtual organization enabled by an agreement between the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the state ministries for research of Baden-Wurttem ̈ berg, Bayern, and Nordrhein-Westfalen. Already today, the GCS provides the most powerful high-performance computing - frastructure in Europe. Through GCS, HLRS participates in the European project PRACE (Partnership for Advances Computing in Europe) and - tends its reach to all European member countries. These activities aligns well with the activities of HLRS in the European HPC infrastructure project DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Appli- tions) and in the European HPC support project HPC-Europa. Beyond that, HLRS and its partners in the GCS have agreed on a common strategy for the installation of the next generation of leading edge HPC hardware over the next ?ve years. The University of Stuttgart and the University of Karlsruhe have furth- more agreed to bundle their competences and resources.

Book excerpt: Most of the papers in this volume were presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop High Performance Computing: Technology and Application, held in Cetraro, Italy from 24 to 26 of June, 1996. The main purpose of the Workshop was to discuss some key scientific and technological developments in high performance computing, identify significant trends and defme desirable research objectives. The volume structure corresponds, in general, to the outline of the workshop technical agenda: general concepts and emerging systems, software technology, algorithms and applications. One of the Workshop innovations was an effort to extend slightly the scope of the meeting from scientific/engineering computing to enterprise-wide computing. The papers on performance and scalability of database servers, and Oracle DBMS reflect this attempt We hope that after reading this collection of papers the readers will have a good idea about some important research and technological issues in high performance computing. We wish to give our thanks to the NATO Scientific and Environmental Affairs Division for being the principal sponsor for the Workshop. Also we are pleased to acknowledge other institutions and companies that supported the Workshop: European Union: European Commission DGIII-Industry, CNR: National Research Council of Italy, University of Calabria, Alenia Spazio, Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali, ENEA: Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard-Convex, Hitachi, NEC, Oracle, and Silicon Graphics-Cray Research.
