Book excerpt: "Scandinavian design is a movement characterised by simplicity, minimalism and functionality that emerged in the early 20th century, and subsequently flourished in the 1950s throughout the five Nordic countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. Scandinavian designers are known especially for household goods including furniture, textiles, ceramics, lamps, and glass, but Scandinavian design has been extended to be an influential movement in architecture and industrial design. High On...Scandinavian Architects presents twenty-eight architects from Scandinavia with their latest projects from the areas of residential, commercial and public buildings. Whether large or small, sharp-edged or soft, coarse or fine, the architecture depicted in this volume is characterised by the iconoclastic flair of Scandinavia"--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most complete survey of Nordic architecture available today. From Viking structures to Renaissance housing projects, Medieval stave churches to modern crematoriums, Architecture in the Scandinavian Countries presents the most complete survey of Nordic architecture available today. Its more than 400 illustrations provide a visual introduction to nearly 10,000 years of building in the region, with examples of ecclesiastical, domestic, and civic buildings showing how Scandinavian architects used their own resources and traditions, as well as adapting the styles of medieval, Renaissance, baroque, and modern Europe to generate ideas that were to have major international consequences. More than three decades after Thomas Paulsson published his pioneering book Scandinavian Architecture, the first serious attempt to present a unified history of Nordic building, Marian Donnelly has written an even more comprehensive work. Donnelly's account begins with the earliest known remains of dwellings dating to around 7500 B.C. and closes with the commercial buildings of the 1970s. In between, she covers every important figure, movement, and style in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and the Faroes. Included are both canonical and unknown structures, obscure and celebrated architects. There is an extensive bibliography and a guide to biographical references for the architects.

Book Synopsis Organic Design in Twentieth-Century Nordic Architecture by : Erik Champion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Design in Twentieth-Century Nordic Architecture presents a communicable and useful definition of organic architecture that reaches beyond constraints. The book focuses on the works and writings of architects in Nordic countries, such as Sigurd Lewerentz, Jørn Utzon, Sverre Fehn and the Aaltos (Aino, Elissa and Alvar), among others. It is structured around the ideas of organic design principles that influenced them and allowed their work to evolve from one building to another. Erik Champion argues organic architecture can be viewed as a concerted attempt to thematically unify the built environment through the allegorical expression of ongoing interaction between designer, architectural brief and building-as-process. With over 140 black and white images, this book is an intriguing read for architecture students and professionals alike.

Book Synopsis Planetveien 12 by : Elisabeth Tostrup
Download or read book Planetveien 12 written by Elisabeth Tostrup and published by Artifice Incorporated. This book was released on 2014 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korsmo House, 1955, is an icon of moder n Scandinavian architecture--an experimental house that has been frequently published in magazines and architecture anthologies. A few years ago a jury elected the house as one of the ten most significant buildings in Norwegian twentieth century architecture. Professor Knut Hjeltnes says in the Arkitektur-N 5/2012 review that "Planet Road, 12, is one of the most important private houses in Norway, owing both to the qualities of the house and the significance of the inhabitants in Norwegian post-war culture." The original owner, Grete Prytz Kittelsen (earlier Korsmo) lived in the house until she passed away in 2010. The house is now listed for preservation. Arne Korsmo (1900-1968) was a prominent Norwegian architect, best-known for a large number of functionalist buildings and interiors made in the 1930s. Also a renowned exhibition architect and product designer, Korsmo was highly-esteemed as a post-war teacher of architecture and interior design. Grete Prytz Korsmo (later Kittelsen, 1917-2010) was a goldsmith and pioneering enamel artist, a 'grand lady' of Scandinavian design and a trusted member of the World Craft Council. Scandinavian Design is subject to increasing interest worldwide and with it so is the Korsmo House. The Korsmo couple were the incarnation of post-war Scandinavian design, winning prizes internationally for product design and exhibition architecture. Planetveien 12 discusses the location of this architectural icon, the house's many incarnations, the biographies of the architect and the Korsmo couple's visit to America where they met Hugo Weber, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and, significantly, Ray and Charles Eames. The book also details Korsmo's other projects and his teaching careeer, alongside detailed plans from inception and a full photographic essay about the finished house. The author, Elisabeth Tostrup, is an architect and professor at the Oslo School of Architecture; previous publications include Norwegian Wood: the Thoughtful Architecture of Wenche Selmer, 2006, and Architecture and Rhetoric: Text and Design in Architectural Competitions, 1999.
