Book excerpt: This book introduces the physics and technology of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC), highlighting the most recent modifications that shaped the final configuration, which is now in the advanced stages of its construction. This new High-Luminosity configuration of the LHC is the major accelerator project of this decade and will give new life to the LHC after its first fifteen years of operation, allowing for more precise measurements of the Higgs Boson and extending the mass limit reach for new particles. The LHC is such a highly optimized machine that upgrading it requires breakthroughs in many areas. Unsurprisingly, the High-Luminosity LHC required a long R&D period to bring into life an innovative accelerator magnet, based on Nb3Sn and capable of generating fields in the 11-12 T range, as well as many other new accelerator technologies such as superconducting compact RF crab cavities, advanced collimation concepts, a novel powering technology based on high temperature superconducting links, and others. The book is a self-consistent series of papers, which addresses all technology and design issues. Each paper can be read separately as well. The first few papers provide a summary of the whole project, the physics motivation, and the accelerator challenges. Altogether, this book brings the reader to the heart of the technologies that will also be key for the next generation of hadron colliders. This book is an essential reference for physicists and engineers in the field of hadron colliders and LHC related issues and can also be read by postgraduate students.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Superconductivity by : David A. Cardwell
Download or read book Handbook of Superconductivity written by David A. Cardwell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes of the extensively revised and updated second edition of the Handbook of Superconductivity. The past twenty years have seen rapid progress in superconducting materials, which exhibit one of the most remarkable physical states of matter ever to be discovered. Superconductivity brings quantum mechanics to the scale of the everyday world where a single, coherent quantum state may extend over a distance of metres, or even kilometres, depending on the size of a coil or length of superconducting wire. Viable applications of superconductors rely fundamentally on an understanding of this intriguing phenomena and the availability of a range of materials with bespoke properties to meet practical needs. While the first volume covers the fundamentals of superconductivity and the various classes of superconducting materials, Volume 2 covers processing of the desired superconducting materials into desired forms: bulks, films, wires and junction-based devices. The volume closes with articles on the refrigeration methods needed to put the materials into the superconducting state. Key Features: Covers the depth and breadth of the field Includes contributions from leading academics and industry professionals across the world Provides hands-on guidance to the manufacturing and processing technologies A comprehensive reference, the handbook is suitable for both graduate students and practitioners in experimental physics, materials science, and multiple engineering disciplines, including electronic and electrical, chemical, mechanical, metallurgy and others.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Large Hadron Collider - the Detectors by : Michael Hauschild
Download or read book Exploring the Large Hadron Collider - the Detectors written by Michael Hauschild and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Hauschild takes the reader of this essential back to September 2008 to the bumpy start of the Large Hadron Collider LHC, the world's largest particle accelerator and today's world machine at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, Switzerland; one of the most fascinating research centers of all. The author explains how the initial ideas led to the creation of the large collaborations at the LHC, alliances of up to 3,000 physicists. It is these collaborations that use huge particle detectors to measure the collisions at the LHC, hoping to discover new particles. After a stop of more than two years, the LHC was put back into operation in the spring of 2015 to discover the secrets of nature at higher energy than ever before. The Author Dr. Michael Hauschild is a particle physicist at CERN in Geneva and has been a member of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider LHC since 2005. During the first long measurement period of the LHC from 2010 to 2012, he witnessed the discovery of the Higgs particle in summer 2012. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Neustart des LHC: die Detektoren by Michael Hauschild, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Book Synopsis The Search for Supersymmetry in Hadronic Final States Using Boosted Object Reconstruction by : Giordon Holtsberg Stark
Download or read book The Search for Supersymmetry in Hadronic Final States Using Boosted Object Reconstruction written by Giordon Holtsberg Stark and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) operates at the highest energy scales ever artificially created in particle collision experiments with a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV. In addition, the high luminosity allows the unique opportunity to probe the Standard Model at the electroweak scale and explore for rare signs of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The coupling of the third-generation top quark to the Higgs boson introduces large, quadratic, radiative corrections to the Higgs mass, requiring a significant amount of fine-tuning that results in a nearly perfect correction of the Higgs mass from the Planck scale to the observable electroweak scale. A possible solution to the naturalness problem proposes a collection of supersymmetric partners to the Standard Model particles with the mass of lightest particles at the electroweak scale: the gluino, the stop squarks, and the lightest supersymmetric particle. This thesis presents the results of a search for gluino pair production decaying via stop squarks to the lightest neutralino in hadronic final states using a total integrated luminosity 36.1 fb‒1 of data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. This analysis considers a simplified supersymmetry model targeting extreme regions of the phase space with large missing transverse momentum, multiple b-tagged jets, and several energetic jets. No excess is observed and limits on the gluino mass are set at the 95% CL, greatly extending the previous results in 2012 from 1.4 TeV to 1.9 TeV. The increase of the LHC luminosity also poses challenges to the current trigger system in the ATLAS detector necessitating planned upgrades. One of the upgrades for the trigger system is the Global Feature Extractor (gFEX) which aims to recover lost efficiency in boosted hadronic final states by identifying large radius jets produced by top quarks, Higgs, Z and W bosons which are critical for future ATLAS physics programs. This module is a unique board with 3 processor FPGAs for data processing and an embedded multi-processor system-on-chip for slow-control and monitoring. This thesis will also describe the work on developing this hardware and several physics upgrade studies on the trigger performance.
Book Synopsis A Hardware Track-Trigger for CMS by : Thomas Owen James
Download or read book A Hardware Track-Trigger for CMS written by Thomas Owen James and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work described in this PhD thesis is a study of a real implementation of a track-finder system which could provide reconstructed high transverse momentum tracks to the first-level trigger of the High Luminosity LHC upgrade of the CMS experiment. This is vital for the future success of CMS, since otherwise it will be impossible to achieve the trigger selectivity needed to contain the very high event rates. The unique and extremely challenging requirement of the system is to utilise the enormous volume of tracker data within a few microseconds to arrive at a trigger decision. The track-finder demonstrator described proved unequivocally, using existing hardware, that a real-time track-finder could be built using present-generation FPGA-based technology which would meet the latency and performance requirements of the future tracker. This means that more advanced hardware customised for the new CMS tracker should be even more capable, and will deliver very significant gains for the future physics returns from the LHC.

Book Synopsis Dijet Angular Distributions in Proton-Proton Collisions by : Nele Boelaert
Download or read book Dijet Angular Distributions in Proton-Proton Collisions written by Nele Boelaert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is based on the first data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Its theme can be described as the classical Rutherford scattering experiment adapted to the LHC: measurement of scattering angles to search for new physics and substructure. At the LHC, colliding quarks and gluons exit the proton collisions as collimated particle showers, or jets. The thesis presents studies of the scattering angles of these jets. It includes a phenomenological study at the LHC design energy of 14 TeV, where a model of so-called large extra dimensions is used as a benchmark process for the sensitivity to new physics. The experimental result is the first measurement, made in 2010, by ATLAS, operating at the LHC start-up energy of 7 TeV. The result is compatible with the Standard Model and demonstrates how well the physics and the apparatus are understood. The first data is a tiny fraction of what will be accumulated in the coming years, and this study has set the stage for performing these measurements with confidence as the LHC accumulates luminosity and increases its energy, thereby probing smaller length scales.
Book Synopsis Searches for New Physics Using Innovative Data Acquisition, Analysis, and Compression Techniques by : Per Alexander Ekman
Download or read book Searches for New Physics Using Innovative Data Acquisition, Analysis, and Compression Techniques written by Per Alexander Ekman and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high event rate delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provides experiments with opportunities for new discoveries as well as challenges related to the large amounts of data recorded. Overcoming this requires innovative techniques in the three topics of this thesis: Data acquisition, data analysis, and data compression. In the data taking period of 2015-2018, the ATLAS experiment received 10-70 simultaneous proton-proton collision events every 25 ns. At these high event rates, the experiment relies on trigger methods which only process the interesting collision events and keep detector readout and data storage within bandwidth constraints. The Trigger Level Analysis (TLA) presented in this thesis circumvents these bandwidth constraints by using the smaller event objects reconstructed at the trigger level as input to the analysis. The trigger level objects require custom calibration schemes, one of these was developed as part of this thesis to be used in the current and next iterations of the analysis. The LHC is scheduled to be upgraded to the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and deliver 200 simultaneous proton-proton collision events. To provide the necessary resolution, readout speed, and radiation hardness, the ATLAS Inner Detector will be upgraded to the new fully silicon-based Inner Tracker (ITk). This thesis presents the work performed in developing, manufacturing, and delivering an automated quality control system for the new detector modules. Quality testing of the detector modules using this system is currently ongoing at multiple international institutes. The large amount of simultaneous events provided by the HL-LHC will also be challenging for data storage, where the amount of ATLAS generated data is projected to be 5 times larger than the storage resources. As the data are already highly compressed using lossless methods, the work in this thesis presents proof-of-principle studies using machine learning-based methods to derive lossy compression algorithms tailored to a variety of datasets. The tool developed for this purpose is made available as an open-source project called "Baler".
Book Synopsis Elementary Cosmology by : James J Kolata
Download or read book Elementary Cosmology written by James J Kolata and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmology is the study of the origin, size, and evolution of the entire universe. Every culture has developed a cosmology, whether it be based on religious, philosophical, or scientific principles. In this book, the evolution of the scientific understanding of the Universe in Western tradition is traced from the early Greek philosophers to the most modern 21st century view. After a brief introduction to the concept of the scientific method, the first part of the book describes the way in which detailed observations of the Universe, first with the naked eye and later with increasingly complex modern instruments, ultimately led to the development of the "Big Bang" theory. The second part of the book traces the evolution of the Big Bang including the very recent observation that the expansion of the Universe is itself accelerating with time.
