Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-level spacecraft charging events in sunlight are discussed and statistically analyzed to determine environmental parameters critical to charging and the region of space near geosynchronous altitude where charging occurs. Significant levels of spacecraft charging are shown to occur only between 1900 LT and 0900 LT at any altitude or latitude of the SCATHA satellite orbit. High-level charging is shown to occur only during periods when the magnetic activity index is 2+ or greater. Distribution functions of energetic electrons and ions are presented for 3 high-level charging periods on days 114, 241 and 363, 1979. Moments of the distribution functions are determined, and fitting techniques used to derive two-Maxwellian densities and temperatures are discussed. Results are provided in a format usable in satellite design specifications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the modern body of spacecraft charging knowledge—from first principles for the beginner to intermediate and advanced concepts The only book to blend the theoretical and practical aspects of spacecraft charging, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects defines the environment that not only creates the aurora, but which also can have significant effects on spacecraft, such as disruption of science measurements and solar arrays from electrostatic discharge (ESD). It describes in detail the physics of the interaction phenomenon as well as how to construct spacecraft to enhance their survivability in the harsh environment of space. Combining the authors' extensive experience in spacecraft charging—and in their provision of design support to NASA, JPL, the commercial satellite market, and numerous other projects—this incredible book offers both a robust physics background and practical advice for neophytes in the field and experienced plasma physicists and spacecraft engineers. In addition to containing numerous equations, graphs, tables, references, and illustrations, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects covers: Solar cell technology, especially higher voltage arrays, and the new design approaches that are appropriate for them Information about the space plasma environment New analytic computer codes to analyze spacecraft charging Spacecraft anomalies and failures which emphasized designs that are of greater importance than others

Book excerpt: At high latitudes, during periods of auroral activity, low-earth polar orbiting spacecraft can pass through a region of intense, energetic electron fluxes and low thermal plasma density. The Nascap-2k computer code has been extended to model spacecraft surface charging in the auroral region. This report documents how to use the new capabilities, the equations used to describe the environment and its interactions with the surfaces, and the validation of the results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this report is in two parts. In the first, we develop a simple approximate prediction of the required conditions for high-voltage polar-orbit charging. The results suggest that for any given spacecraft, surface potentials are likely to depend more strongly on the ratio of ambient flux of high-energy electrons to that of all ions, than on any other environmental parameter. In the second part of this report, we present results of a numerical calculation of secondary-electron escape currents from negatively-charged spacecraft surfaces having various orientations relative to the local magnetic-field direction. Keywords include: Spacecraft charging, Auroral Ionosphere, Computer code, Low polar orbit, and Electron escape.

Book excerpt: The diverse planetary environments in the solar system react in somewhat different ways to the encompassing influence of the Sun. These different interactions define the electrostatic phenomena that take place on and near planetary surfaces. The desire to understand the electrostatic environments of planetary surfaces goes beyond scientific inquiry. These environments have enormous implications for both human and robotic exploration of the solar system. This book describes in some detail what is known about the electrostatic environment of the solar system from early and current experiments on Earth as well as what is being learned from the instrumentation on the space exploration missions (NASA, European Space Agency, and the Japanese Space Agency) of the last few decades. It begins with a brief review of the basic principles of electrostatics.

Book excerpt: Problems pertaining to spacecraft charging at near-geosynchronous orbit were investigated using data from P78-2 SCATHA collected in 1979-80. These studies included specification of significant aspects of the near-geosynchronous environment, effectiveness of active control systems and verification of computer modeling of satellite potentials. Environmental specification studies were made of major plasma sheet boundaries, near-geosynchronous particle fluxes and long term prediction of hazardous geomagnetic conditions. Work was begun on magnetospheric modeling. Unfortunately, the particle beam active control system caused the failure of two instruments. These events were thoroughtly studied but some uncertainty remains concerning the causes of the problems. Comparisons of spacecraft discharge techniques indicated the x sub e (+) plasma source was the preferred operational mode. Satisfactory agreement with observed charging levels was obtained when the NASCAP/AFGL computer model was used with environmental input derived from observed particle fluxes. A secondary research effort focused on studies of ionosphere-magnetosphere interactions in the polar cap and auroral zone. Air Force measurements of S3-2 electric and magnetic fields and electron and thermal plasma fluxes were used as well as DMSP auroral imagery.

Book excerpt: Ungrounded surface materials on the exterior of low-to-medium altitude and medium-to-high inclination satellites can become charged in the auroral electron environment at high latitudes. The orientation of such surfaces will present different aspects relative to the satellite sun line and the satellite velocity vector. Such surfaces can be both in shadow and in the satellite wake at the same time, which enhances the chances of charging in the dusk to pre-noon sector of the auroral oval, depending on plasma density and lighting conditions at file satellite altitude and inclination. It is recommended that all surfaces be conductors if surface charging and associated electrostatic discharge (ESD) are to be avoided. Otherwise, the satellite system should be designed to tolerate the surface ESD that will occur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work first reviews the main differences between the plasma environments in geostationary orbit and low polar orbit with regard to high-voltage charging situations. Section 2 develops a simple rough estimate of the required conditions for overall charging of a large spacecraft in low-orbit auroral-zone conditions. The results indicate that for any given spacecraft, surface potentials are likely to depend more strongly on the ratio of ambient flux of high-energy electrons to that of all ions than on any other environmental parameter, and this prediction has been corroborated by results of Gussenhoven et al for the DMSP satellites. Section 3 presents results from a calculation of escape currents of electrons emitted from negatively-charged spacecraft surfaces having various orientations relative to the direction of the local magnetic field B. The suppression of such currents by B effects indicates that on mostly-dielectric large spacecraft such as the Shuttle Orbiter, local charging, especially on surfaces nearly parallel to B, may occur in ionospheric conditions which do not produce overall charging. Section 4 proposes a wake-induced-barrier-effect mechanism which also suppresses escape of emitted electrons. This effect appears to permit beam-induced as well as polar-orbit high-voltage charging to occur. Section 5 presents preliminary results of numerical simulation work directed toward making detailed tests of these predictions. (jhd).

Book excerpt: This report presented a paper on 'The Aerospace Environment at High Altitudes and its Implications for Spacecraft Charging and Communications, The Hague, Netherlands, 2-6 June 1986. This paper is primarily of a survey nature, and contains relatively brief accounts of several aspects of the low polar orbit high voltage charging problem. However, does present the first results from L.W. Parker's simulation work which was supported by this Contract. This report also contains the text of a paper on an expanded version of an earlier paper on secondary electron escape from negatively charged spacecraft surfaces in a magnetic field, and now includes results for situations in which there exist electric fields tangential as well as normal to the surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The same conditions needed for spacecraft charging at geosynchronous orbit are also found at times in the low-altitude polar-auroral environment. The required conditions are high fluxes of energetic electrons, low plasma densities, and darkness. The energetic electrons are found in very bright active auroras. Plasma densities are occasionally low enough in polar regions but, more importantly, a large body such as the Shuttle sweeps out the ambient ionospheric plasma to produce a cavity in its wake. The POLAR charging code has been used with measured parameters for energetic auroral electrons and plasma densities to evaluate polar orbit charging. The Shuttle can be expected to charge at times to thousands of volts while the astronaut during EVA can charge to hundreds of volts. The multibody charging problem of the astronaut in the wake of the Shuttle, a more complicated problem, is being evaluated. Laboratory test results are presented that confirm charging and subsequent arc discharge of EVA equipment material samples. Induced current and radiated radio frequency EMI were measured from the arc discharges. Such EMI could cause potentially dangerous EVA equipment anomalies. Ground tests of subsystems and the complete EVA equipment system are needed.
