Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Grade Bulbs and Seeds for Fall Planting, 1898 The growing of bulbs, other than the charms their flowers possess, has many ad vantages over that of any other class of flowering plants, among others, and a very great one, is that many of them produce their flowers in very early Spring, at a season when few other plants are in blossom. At this season, in a sheltered, sunny spot, a few clumps of Snow-drops, Crocus, Scillas, will present a mass of color, in graceful forms, while the snow yet lingers in shaded places; before these are gone the Hyacinths refresh us with their grateful fragrance these are soon followed by the Narcissus and Early Tulips, and all before vegetation is fairly started In rapid succession follow the gorgeous Parrot Tulips, Crown Imperials, and before these are gone the Lilies commence their long succession of bloom. Interspersed with these is a host of other bulbs, equally valuable for their flowers, but whose names are rarely mention ed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want to grow healthy vegetables at home, but have hesitated because it seems too hard and time consuming, Organic Gardening for Everyone is your perfect hands-on guide—an “if I can do it, you can do it” case study that addresses your concerns and gets you started. Loaded with practical advice and step-by-step guidance, Organic Gardening for Everyone takes a very personal and friendly approach to a subject that can be intimidating. It is a first-class primer on organic vegetable gardening, and an inspirational story about how anyone can balance the rigors of gardening with the demands of a modern, family-oriented lifestyle. In 2012, a California mom decided to start an organic vegetable garden. But she went about it in an unusual way: she crowdsourced it by launching a YouTube channel under the name "CaliKim" and asking for help. And then she started planting. As questions came up, she turned to her viewers and subscribers and they replied with answers and advice. As she learned, her garden grew successfully—even in the hot, harsh California climate. Her expertise also grew, and now she answers many more questions than she asks and has become a very accomplished home gardener. And CaliKim has a great story to tell: growing healthy organic vegetables for your family is not difficult, even for today’s time-challenged lifestyles. She provides complete step-by-step information on growing the most popular edibles organically, and also gives sound advice on how to take on the challenges of balancing a hectic lifestyle with successful growing—and how to involve the whole family in the process. You'll be rewarded for your effort every time you place a plate of natural, organic vegetables on the family dinner table knowing exactly what they are, what is in them, and where they came from.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulbs and Seeds: A Book of Exceptional Value to Gardeners Seeking a Superior Assortment of Selected and Tested Bulbs, Flowering Roots and Seeds for Fall Planting; Season 1920 Culture 1n Glasses. Single varieties are better adapted for culture in glasses than double ones. The bulb should be placed so that the base is just in contact with the water. Soft rainwater should be used, and a little charcoal might be placed in it to keep it pure. The glasses should be kept in a cool, dark closet for ten or twelve days, until roots are formed, and then exposed to the light and air as much as possible. Do not place them near gaslight. In very cold weather the glasses should be removed from the window, as the bulbs cannot stand. Frost. 'the water should never be allowed to freeze, and it should be changed every two or three days. Customers unacquainted with the differ ent varieties will do well to leave the selection to us, only specifying whether bulbs are wanted for pot, glass, or garden culture. We invite special attention to the assort ment of Named Hyacinths of our selection offered on page 3, and to the Hyacinth Glasses which are quoted at the end of the catalogue.
