Book excerpt: We are studying the feasibility of utilizing K{alpha} x-ray sources in the range of 20 to 100 keV as a backlighters for imaging various stages of implosions and high areal density planar samples driven by the NIF laser facility. The hard x-ray K{alpha} sources are created by relativistic electron plasma interactions in the target material after a radiation by short pulse high intensity lasers. In order to understand K{alpha} source characteristics such as production efficiency and brightness as a function of laser parameters, we have performed experiments using the 10 J, 100 fs JanUSP laser. We utilized single-photon counting spectroscopy and x-ray imaging diagnostics to characterize the K{alpha} source. We find that the K{alpha} conversion efficiency from the laser energy at 22 keV is {approx} 3 x 10{sup -4}.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of a compact, tunable, near monochromatic hard x-ray source would have profound and wide ranging applications in a number of areas. These areas include xray diagnostics, medical imaging, microscopy, nuclear resonance absorption, solid-state physics and material sciences. The properties of the x-ray beam which are important for these applications include spectral width, spectral brightness, photon flux, pulse configuration and polarization. Presently, third generation synchrotron sources are being pursued which are based on high energy electron storage rings and undulator magnetic fields. In the following, a laser synchrotron source (LSS) is proposed in which the magnetic undulator is replaced by ultra-high intensity laser pulses, e.g., from a Nd:YAG/Nd:glass laser, and the electron storage ring is replaced by an electron beam of substantially lower energy, e.g., from an rf linac or a high current betatron. Recent advances in compact, short pulse, high intensity laser technology make the LSS a potentially attractive compact source, particularly at high x-ray energies.

Book excerpt: This book represents the first comprehensive treatment of the subject, covering the theoretical principles, present experimental status and important applications of short-pulse laser-matter interactions.Femtosecond lasers have undergone dramatic technological advances over the last fifteen years, generating a whole host of new research activities under the theme of “ultrafast science”. The focused light from these devices is so intense that ordinary matter is torn apart within a few laser cycles. This book takes a close-up look at the exotic physical phenomena which arise as a result of this new form of “light-matter” interaction, covering a diverse set of topics including multiphoton ionization, rapid heatwaves, fast particle generation and relativistic self-channeling. These processes are central to a number of exciting new applications in other fields, such as microholography, optical particle accelerators and photonuclear physics.Repository for numerical models described in Chapter 6 can be found at www.fz-juelich.de/zam/cams/plasma/SPLIM/./a

Book excerpt: Modeling of x-ray emission from targets heated by an ultrashort-pulse high-intensity optical laser is discussed. One application, using the emitted x rays, is pumping inner-shell photo-ionized x-ray lasers. Short wavelength lasing ([lambda] ≤ 15 Å) requires fast rise-time 1--3 key x rays to ionize inner K-shell electrons. It has been shown that structured targets, consisting of grooves on a solid material or a composite of clusters, have high absorption. We model grooved targets as an ensemble of exploding foils finding that the rise time of x rays is rapid enough for pumping inner-shell x-ray lasers. We show that simple atomic models can overestimate the energy in x-ray emission bands. High-Z materials are found to have the highest conversion efficiency but mid-Z materials can be used to provide a band of emission at a particular energy. We show that the pondermotive inhibition of expansion has only a small effect on the x-ray emission. The emission of a Au plasma is found to be appropriate for pumping inner-shell lasing at 14.6 Å in Ne. The required optical laser intensity is of order 1017 W/cm2 using a 100 fsec FWHM duration pulse. To produce a laser with a gain-length product of order 10 requires 5--15 J of optical energy.

Book excerpt: We demonstrated a novel sources of pulsed terahertz radiation and x rays which have ultrashort pulse duration and high intensity; this source is based on emission from ultrashort, laser heated gases and solids. We have examined the propagation of high intensity (up to 1019 W/cm2) ultrashort (100 fs) laser pulses in dense gases; this work has application to variety of studies involving high power laser pulses such as harmonic generation x ray lasers and laser wakefield accelerators. We studied schemes for new x ray lasers. They involve rapid recombination of highly ionized atoms (produced by multiphoton ionization) bellowed by lasing on Ly-alpha x-ray transitions. We developed a new Thomson scattering technique using multiple, ultrashort laser pulses; these studies were done in multiphoton ionized plasmas of interest to the construction of new x ray lasers. We have examined conditions for pumping recombination x-ray lasers using multiphoton ionized -gases. We have examined the non-Maxwellian energy distributions in multi photon ionized gases. Finally, we examined both the coherent and incoherent emission from short pulse laser excited clusters. This latest work has established that sub-wavelength sized clusters can be a source of intense plasma emission. and that the clusters are a source of harmonics from laser matter interaction.

Book excerpt: The use of short laser pulses to generate high peak intensity, ultra-short x-ray pulses enables exciting new experimental capabilities, such as femtosecond pump-probe experiments used to temporally resolve material structural dynamics on atomic time scales. PLEIADES (Picosecond Laser Electron InterAction for Dynamic Evaluation of Structures) is a next generation Thomson scattering x-ray source being developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Ultra-fast picosecond x-rays (10-200 keV) are generated by colliding an energetic electron beam (20-100 MeV) with a high intensity, sub-ps, 800 nm laser pulse. The peak brightness of the source is expected to exceed 102° photons/s/0.1% bandwidth/mm2/mrad2. Simulations of the electron beam production, transport, and final focus are presented. Electron beam measurements, including emittance and final focus spot size are also presented and compared to simulation results. Measurements of x-ray production are also reported and compared to theoretical calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extreme ultraviolet radiation, also referred to as soft X-rays or XUV, offers very special optical properties. The X-UV refractive index of matter is such that normal reflection cannot take place on polished surfaces whereas beam transmission through one micrometer of almost all materials reduces to zero. Therefore, it has long been a difficult task to imagine and to implement devices designed for complex optics experiments in this wavelength range. Thanks to new sources of coherent radiation - XUV-lasers and High Order Harmonics - the use of XUV radiation, for interferometry, holography, diffractive optics, non-linear radiation-matter interaction, time-resolved study of fast and ultrafast phenomena and many other applications, including medical sciences, is ubiquitous.
