Book excerpt: The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in late 2002 and 2003 challenged the global public health community to confront a novel epidemic that spread rapidly from its origins in southern China until it had reached more than 25 other countries within a matter of months. In addition to the number of patients infected with the SARS virus, the disease had profound economic and political repercussions in many of the affected regions. Recent reports of isolated new SARS cases and a fear that the disease could reemerge and spread have put public health officials on high alert for any indications of possible new outbreaks. This report examines the response to SARS by public health systems in individual countries, the biology of the SARS coronavirus and related coronaviruses in animals, the economic and political fallout of the SARS epidemic, quarantine law and other public health measures that apply to combating infectious diseases, and the role of international organizations and scientific cooperation in halting the spread of SARS. The report provides an illuminating survey of findings from the epidemic, along with an assessment of what might be needed in order to contain any future outbreaks of SARS or other emerging infections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Phase IIA of this project, CeraMem has further developed and scaled up ceramic HEPA filters that are appropriate for use on filtration of vent gas from HLW tanks at DOE sites around the country. This work included procuring recrystallized SiC monoliths, developing membrane and cement materials, and defining a manufacturing process for the production of prototype full sizes HEPA filters. CeraMem has demonstrated that prototype full size filters can be manufactured by producing 9 full size filters that passed DOP aerosol testing at the Oak Ridge Filter Test Facility. One of these filters was supplied to the Savannah River Technical Center (SRTC) for process tests using simulated HLW tank waste. SRTC has reported that the filter was regenerable (with some increase in pressure drop) and that the filter retained its HEPA retention capability. CeraMem has also developed a Regenerable HEPA Filter System (RHFS) design and acceptance test plan that was reviewed by DOE personnel. The design and acceptance test plan form the basis of the system proposal for follow-on work in Phase IIB of this project.

Book excerpt: High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters now being manufactured commercially routinely exceed the specification of removing 99.97% of 0.3 mu - diameter particles of a monodisperse dioctyl phthalate (DOP) aerosol. Laboratory tests indicate that when such filters are properly installed in series, at least up to three, each will perform at this same level with plutonia aerosols, leading to decontamination factors in excess of 3 x 10/sup 10/. Filter media that are resistant to serious degradation by hydrogen fluoride and fluorine are now in the process of assembly into filter units for testing. (auth).

This book was released on 2002 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Efficiency Particulate Air filtration is an essential component of the containment and ventilation systems supporting the research and development activities at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. High Efficiency Particulate Air filters range in size from 7.6cm (3 inch) by 10.2 cm (4 inch) cylindrical shape filters to filter array assemblies up to 2.1 m (7 feet) high by 1.5 m (5 feet) wide. Spent filters are grouped by contaminates trapped in the filter media and become one of the components in the respective waste stream. Waste minimization and pollution prevention efforts are applied for both radiological and non-radiological applications. Radiological applications include laboratory hoods, glove boxes, and hot cells. High Efficiency Particulate Air filters also are generated from intake or pre-filtering applications, decontamination activities, and asbestos abatement applications. The disposal avenues include sanitary/industrial waste, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and Toxic Substance Control Act, regulated waste, solid low-level waste, contact handled transuranic, and remote handled transuranic waste. This paper discusses characterization and operational experiences associated with the disposal of the spent filters across multiple applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to "Mastering HVAC Filters: Enhancing Indoor Air Quality." This book serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding and optimizing the performance of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) filters to improve the air quality in indoor environments. In recent years, the importance of indoor air quality has gained significant attention due to its direct impact on human health and well-being. We spend a significant amount of time indoors, whether it be at home, in the workplace, or in public spaces. Therefore, the quality of the air we breathe plays a crucial role in our overall health, comfort, and productivity. HVAC systems are designed to regulate indoor temperature, control humidity levels, and supply fresh air. Central to their function are air filters, which capture and remove airborne particles, pollutants, allergens, and contaminants from the circulated air. However, the effectiveness of these filters can vary significantly depending on several factors, such as filter type, efficiency, maintenance, and usage. "Mastering HVAC Filters: Enhancing Indoor Air Quality" aims to bridge the knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive exploration of HVAC filters and their impact on indoor air quality. Whether you are a homeowner, HVAC professional, building manager, or simply an individual concerned about the air you breathe, this book will equip you with the knowledge and practical tools to make informed decisions about HVAC filters. Throughout the book, we will delve into the fundamentals of HVAC filtration, discussing various filter types, their characteristics, and how to select the most appropriate filter for specific applications. We will explore the importance of filter efficiency and performance metrics, examining how they impact the overall effectiveness of air purification. Additionally, we will tackle crucial topics such as filter maintenance, replacement schedules, and strategies for optimizing HVAC systems to enhance indoor air quality. We will also address emerging trends and technologies in the field, such as electrostatic filters, activated carbon filters, and HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, providing insights into their benefits and limitations. It is our hope that "Mastering HVAC Filters: Enhancing Indoor Air Quality" will serve as a valuable resource, empowering readers to take control of their indoor air quality and create healthier living and working environments. By understanding the principles and best practices outlined in this book, you will be able to make informed decisions, implement effective strategies, and maximize the potential of HVAC filters to promote cleaner and safer indoor air. We extend our gratitude to the contributors, experts, and researchers who have shared their knowledge and insights to make this book possible. We also express our appreciation to the readers for their interest and commitment to improving indoor air quality. Together, we can create healthier indoor environments for a better quality of life. Let us embark on this journey of mastering HVAC filters and enhancing indoor air quality. Sincerely, Charles Nehme
