Book excerpt: An investigation of the cooling of an 18-cylinder, twin-row, radial, air-cooled engine in a high-performance pursuit airplane has been conducted for variable engine and flight conditions at altitudes ranging from 5000 to 35,000 feet in order to provide a basis for predicting high-altitude cooling perfomance from sealevel or low-altitude test results.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cooling characteristics of a modified 14-cylinder double-row radial air-cooled engine installed in a four-engine airplane were determined from cooling data obtained in a single flight at a pressure altitude of 7000 feet. The tests were conducted in such a manner that the effects of charge-air flow, cooling-air pressure drop, and fuel-air ratio on engine cooling could be separately investigated.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cooling characteristics of 14-cylinder double-row radial air-cooled engines have been compared in a test stand and in flight. The three types of NACA cooling tests were made for both engines: variable charge-air flow, variable cooling-air pressure drop, and variable fuel-air ratio. Test-stand runs were made at ground-level atmospheric conditions; flight tests were made at ground-level atmospheric conditions; flight tests wer conducted in a four-engine airplane in a single flight at a pressure altitude of 7000 feet. All tests were made at an engine speed of approximately 2230 rpm, in a low blower ratio, and with normal spark advance for these engines (25 degrees B.T.C.).
Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of the Aerodynamics and Cooling of a Horizontally-opposed Air-cooled Aircraft Engine Installation by : Stan J. Miley
Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Aerodynamics and Cooling of a Horizontally-opposed Air-cooled Aircraft Engine Installation written by Stan J. Miley and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight-test based research program was performed to investigate the aerodynamics and cooling of a horizontally-opposed engine installation. Specific areas investigated were the internal aerodynamics and cooling mechanics of the installation, inlet aerodynamics, and exit aerodynamics. The applicable theory and current state of the art are discussed for each area. Flight-test and ground-test techniques for the development of the cooling installation and the solution of cooling problems are presented. The results show that much of the internal aerodynamics and cooling technology developed for radial engines are applicable to horizontally opposed engines. Correlation is established between engine manufacturer's cooling design data and flight measurements of the particular installation. Also, a flight-test method for the development of cooling requirements in terms of easily measurable parameters is presented. The impact of inlet and exit design on cooling and cooling drag is shown to be of major significance.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparison has been made in flight of the antiknock characteristics of triptane and a temperature-sensitive fuel component (xylidines) with a reference fuel (28-R) and of flight fuel knock limits with engine cooling limits. The knock limits of the three fuels were investigated in a modified 14-cylinder double-row radial air-cooled engine installed in a four-engine airplane. Tests were conducted at engine speeds of 1800 and 2250 rpm, at high and low blower ratios, spark settings of 25 degrees and 32 degrees B.T.C., and the carburetor-air temperature was maintained at approximately 85 degrees F. All tests for a given engine speed were made with approximately constant cooling-air pressure drop; consequently, engine-temperature levels were higher and the higher performance levels.

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted with a double-row radial, air-cooled engine to investigate the over-all cooling characteristics and to analyze to what extent variations in temperature distribution among the cylinders were caused by variations in cooling-air pressure drop, power, and fuel-air ratio. The tests of temperature distribution were made over a range of engine powers from 1000 to 1700 brake horsepower. The results also allowed estimation of the improvement in the cylinder-temperature pattern that might be attained through improvement in the distribution of cooling-air pressure drop, power and fuel-air ratio.

This book was released on 1944 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparison has been made in flight of the antiknock characteristics of triptane with a temperature-sensitive blending agent (xylidines) and of the fuel knock limits with engine cooling limits. The knock limits of three fuels were investigated with a 14-cylinder double-row radial air-cooled engine installed in a four-engine airplane. The investigation was conducted at an engine speed of 1800 rpm in high blower ratio with two carburetor-air temperatures and at 2230 rpm in high and low blower ratios with one carburetor-air temperature.
