Book Synopsis Leaving the Witness by : Amber Scorah
Download or read book Leaving the Witness written by Amber Scorah and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A fascinating glimpse into the consciousness of being an outsider in every possible way, and what it takes to find your path into the life you'd like to lead."--Nylon A riveting memoir of losing faith and finding freedom while a covert missionary in one of the world's most restrictive countries. A third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Amber Scorah had devoted her life to sounding God's warning of impending Armageddon. She volunteered to take the message to China, where the preaching she did was illegal and could result in her expulsion or worse. Here, she had some distance from her community for the first time. Immersion in a foreign language and culture--and a whole new way of thinking--turned her world upside down, and eventually led her to lose all that she had been sure was true. As a proselytizer in Shanghai, using fake names and secret codes to evade the authorities' notice, Scorah discreetly looked for targets in public parks and stores. To support herself, she found work at a Chinese language learning podcast, hiding her real purpose from her coworkers. Now with a creative outlet, getting to know worldly people for the first time, she began to understand that there were other ways of seeing the world and living a fulfilling life. When one of these relationships became an "escape hatch," Scorah's loss of faith culminated in her own personal apocalypse, the only kind of ending possible for a Jehovah's Witness. Shunned by family and friends as an apostate, Scorah was alone in Shanghai and thrown into a world she had only known from the periphery--with no education or support system. A coming of age story of a woman already in her thirties, this unforgettable memoir examines what it's like to start one's life over again with an entirely new identity. It follows Scorah to New York City, where a personal tragedy forces her to look for new ways to find meaning in the absence of religion. With compelling, spare prose, Leaving the Witness traces the bittersweet process of starting over, when everything one's life was built around is gone.

Book Synopsis The Figure of the Witness in International Criminal Tribunals by : Benjamin Thorne
Download or read book The Figure of the Witness in International Criminal Tribunals written by Benjamin Thorne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how international criminal institutions, and their actors – legal counsels, judges, investigators, registrars – construct witness identity and memory. Filling an important gap within transitional justice scholarship, this conceptually led and empirically grounded interdisciplinary study takes the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) as a case study. It asks: How do legal witnesses of human rights violations contribute to memory production in transitional post-conflict societies? Witnessing at tribunals entails individuals externalising memories of violations. This is commonly construed within the transitional justice legal scholarship as an opportunity for individuals to ensure their memories are entered into an historical record. Yet this predominant understanding of witness testimony fails to comprehend the nature of memory. Memory construction entails fragments of individual and collective memories within a contestable and contingent framing of the past. Accordingly, the book challenges the claim that international criminal courts and tribunals are able to produce a collective memory of atrocities; as it maintains that witnessing must be understood as a contingent and multi-layered discursive process. Contributing to the specific analysis of witnessing and memory, but also to the broader field of transitional justice, this book will appeal to scholars and practitioners in these areas, as well as others in legal theory, global criminology, memory studies, international relations, and international human rights.
Book Synopsis The Witness Chronicles by : Ken Helsley

Book excerpt: Dr. Emil Josef and his student researchers have discovered the most remarkable trove of ancient artifacts ever discovered in the nation of Isreal. "The Witness Chronicles," as they are dubbed by the press, are a series of written tablets older than anything ever discovered. What is contained on these tablets has so stunned the world that they will change the very understanding of the Bible for evermore. The public revealing of the tablets coincides with the sudden disappearance of hundreds of thousands of believers throughout the world. At a time when the world's governments are trying to downplay any religious significance to the disappearances by seizing the opportunity to outlaw all religious text, these tablets, which have been authenticated as Archeological relics, cannot be suppressed and stand alone as a testament to the one true God in the midst of an all out war against religion throughout the world. Ken Helsley lives in Joplin, Missouri. He has two wonderful sons and one granddaughter who is the delight of his life. He is a veteran of United States Navy and for the past twenty years has been a professional Instructional Systems Designer, Corporate Trainer, Business Consultant and Public Lecturer. Ken has an insatiable desire to know God and learn everything he can about the Father of all Creation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Job has been a rich source of truth and comfort for its readers throughout the ages, but the crowning glory of this book is the prophetic testimony it bears to the sufferings that Jesus Christ would endure as the savior of his people. The Shadow of Christ in the Book of Job examines the historical character of Job as a typological figure, whose experience of suffering leading to glory was meant to portray the work of Christ, and provide assurance and comfort to all who bear affliction in faith.
