Download or read book Sensing Others written by Alice Rudge and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensing Others explores the lives of Indigenous Batek people in Peninsular Malaysia amid the strange and the new in the borderland between protected national park and oil palm plantation. As their ancestral forests disappear around them, Batek people nevertheless attempt to live well among the strange Others they now encounter: out-of-place animals and plants, traders, tourists, poachers, and forest guards. How Batek people voice their experiences of the good and the strange in relation to these Others challenges essentialized notions of cultural and species difference and the separateness of ethical worlds. Drawing on meticulous, long-term ethnographic research with Batek people, Alice Rudge argues that as people seek to make habitable a constantly changing landscape, what counts as Otherness is always under negotiation. Anthropology's traditional dictum to "make the strange familiar, and the familiar strange" creates a binary between the familiar and the Other, often encapsulating Indigenous lives as the archetypal Other to the "modern" worldview. Yet living well amid precarity involves constantly negotiating Otherness's ambivalences, as people, plants, animals, and places can all become familiar, strange, or both. Sensing Others reveals that when looking from the boundary, what counts as Otherness is impossible to pin down.

Book Synopsis Commonsense and the Theory of International Politics by : John C. Garnett
Download or read book Commonsense and the Theory of International Politics written by John C. Garnett and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International politics is not a cumulative subject in which the latest book makes all the others obsolete . . . . The assumption underlying these pages is that our understanding of international politics is more likely to be improved by reflecting upon and reworking what we already know about the subject, than by topping up our knowledge with either more detailed research or more contemporary analysis. . . . Each of the chapters deals with a different aspect of international theory . . . . A discerning reader may become aware of certain unifying threads running through and linking all of the chapters. They have all been written out of a conviction that explanation and not prescription is the only proper role of the political scientist; and they all reflect my skepticism about the scientific nature of international politics. John C. Garnett In a refreshing and clear analysis, Dr. Garnett looks at the nature of international theory and the problems associated with its development. Drawing from many disciplines, he examines fundamental questions in a new way, giving a measure of commonsense to a subject which has become complicated and esoteric. His use of analogies and quotations bring his subject alive in a study that will be of interest to those involved in both the social sciences and politics.

Book Synopsis The Analytical Writer by : Adrienne Robins
Download or read book The Analytical Writer written by Adrienne Robins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1995-09 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Analytical Writing Adrienne Robins explains college writing as a process of discovery, as a series of strategies that any college student can learn to apply. All strategies explained in this text are based on sound theories of teaching writing and on the patterns of successful writers. Writing and thinking should not be separated, and presenting only the steps without the accompanying explanation of how they influence thinking would be of little more help than having no method at all. By using this text the students will see as they plan, draft, and revise how their writing helps clarify their thoughts. This clearly written and engaging textbook is illustrated by real examples of student writing and appropriate cartoons. The second edition was revised and updated based on the large-scale evaluation of the first edition completed by professors and students. The new edition reflects four essential values: recognizing the diversity of writing processes, the necessity of peer and teacher interaction with the writer on drafts, the integration of writing and reading, and the appropriate uses of technology. Specific features of this second edition include: -new writing samples -electronic citation formats -updated library use chapter with technological guidance -concise paragraph chapter -revised introduction and conclusion chapter -rhetorical as well as grammatical explanations for punctuation usage -new cartoons -exercises drawn from students' papers -a condensed chapter on research papers -and an expanded, and clearer, chapter on special assignments and other writing tasks A Collegiate Press book

Download or read book The Hidden Link, An Awesome Desire written by Coleen McAvoy and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As our grandparents tell us stories about when they were young, we think that was a long time ago. If we know a little history, we might even have some realization of what life was like for our grandparents. If we were to ask God how old He was or where He was born, we would discover that things are very different with God. He did not have a beginning, nor does He have an ending. But He does have an awesome desire and plan. As you slowly read this book alone, with your parents, or with someone else, you will discover the infinite God in action. You will learn that you, your whole family and even your friends, can be a part of God’s history and that all of us are an important link in His eternal purpose for man. You will touch God's desire, His patience, His care, His lovingkindness, and above all, His wisdom in the way He plans and carries out what is on His heart.

Book Synopsis Differential Geometry Of Warped Product Manifolds And Submanifolds by : Chen Bang-yen
Download or read book Differential Geometry Of Warped Product Manifolds And Submanifolds written by Chen Bang-yen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A warped product manifold is a Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian manifold whose metric tensor can be decomposed into a Cartesian product of the y geometry and the x geometry — except that the x-part is warped, that is, it is rescaled by a scalar function of the other coordinates y. The notion of warped product manifolds plays very important roles not only in geometry but also in mathematical physics, especially in general relativity. In fact, many basic solutions of the Einstein field equations, including the Schwarzschild solution and the Robertson–Walker models, are warped product manifolds. The first part of this volume provides a self-contained and accessible introduction to the important subject of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and submanifolds. The second part presents a detailed and up-to-date account on important results of warped product manifolds, including several important spacetimes such as Robertson–Walker's and Schwarzschild's. The famous John Nash's embedding theorem published in 1956 implies that every warped product manifold can be realized as a warped product submanifold in a suitable Euclidean space. The study of warped product submanifolds in various important ambient spaces from an extrinsic point of view was initiated by the author around the beginning of this century. The last part of this volume contains an extensive and comprehensive survey of numerous important results on the geometry of warped product submanifolds done during this century by many geometers.
