Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multi-period open pit mine production scheduling problem is formulated as a large scale linear programming problem using the block concept. A solution procedure is developed through decomposition and partitioning of the subproblem into elementary profit routing problems for which an algorithm is presented. Many of the traditional mine planning concepts are discussed and suggestions for improvement through use of the techniques developed in this thesis are given. In the development of the solution procedure, those constraints which govern the mining system are considered as the master problem. The constraints which dictate the sequence of extraction are used as the subproblem. The properties of the single period subproblem and its dual are discussed, and the dual problem is shown to be equivalent to a bipartite maximum flow problem for which an algorithm is given. The Multi-period subproblem algorithm is developed by partitioning by stages and using the properties of the single period subproblem. This treatment allows optimization of the complete mining-concentrating-refining system over the entire planning horizon and permits the system to dictate how and when to process a block of material. Mine production scheduling is essentially a set of problems: block sequencing, ore-waste discrimination and production rates. Previously the machine learning technique Simulated Annealing (SA) was usedto solve the classic mine production scheduling problem together with Lerchs-Grossman method. We are taking this approach one step forward to solve poly-metallic, multiple process destinations and multiple rock types mine production scheduling problem using the equivalent grade factors. A transportation penalty approach was taken to smooth the fluctuating structure that emerges as a result of SA's nature and to unify the same periods to decrease transportation costs. Moreover, a novel, heuristic memory based SA technique is proposed, where a foreseen variable is nominated to maximize the objective function and this variable's questionable contribution is evaluated by distribution fitting to online gathered data points. If indeed this variable is influencing the objective function, its effect is boosted to also maximize this variable. SA with heuristic based memory converges faster to the solution and produces better results compared to original SA technique within the same frame of time. Success of the approach is demonstrated by two case studies, comparing the revenues of the base case (ranked positional weight algorithm), standard SA and heuristic memory based SA. In all cases, NPV is higher with the heuristic memory based SA." --

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The optimization of open pit mine production scheduling (OPMPS) is an intricate process due to its size and uncertainty of key input parameters. Over the last decade, substantial effort has been made towards the development of new stochastic frameworks that incorporates uncertainty into the decision process. However, due to the intrinsic complexity of the mathematical programming formulation and the large size of mineral deposits, finding an exact solution for the OPMPS is likely intractable. In addition to that, modelling the joint spatial uncertainty of mineral deposits accounting for several correlated geological attributes, significantly increases the complexity of these stochastic frameworks. These observations motivate the development of new computationally efficient approaches for generating joint stochastic simulations of a deposit and for solving the OPMPS under geological uncertainty. This thesis considers both aspects in its two main parts. In the first part of this thesis, an efficient heuristic solution approach is applied and tested to the stochastic mine production scheduling of a relatively large gold mine containing about 120 thousand blocks and considering a set of fifteen geological scenarios generated stochastically. The stochastic integer programming (SIP) formulation addresses multiple processing streams and a 'grade' stockpile which adds flexibility to the specific operation by advancing the processing of highly valuable material. The solution approach tested herein, first generates an initial feasible solution by sequentially solving the stochastic OPMPS period by period and afterwards, a network flow algorithm is used to sequentially search for further improvements. In this network graph the nodes identify candidate blocks which might have their extraction either postponed or advanced, aiming for new schedule with higher values and lower risk. The results show that production schedules with low deviations from production expectations can be generated in a reasonable time for an actual mining environment. In the second part, an efficient joint simulation framework is demonstrated though an application to Vale's Puma deposit, a major nickel laterite asset in Brazil. To integrate the variability of the revolting profiles, their 'true' thicknesses are jointly simulated using min/max autocorrelation factor (MAF). The realizations serve as geological boundaries within which Ni, Co, Fe, SiO2, MgO and dry-tonnage factor (DTF) can be jointly simulated directly at block support scale. The final result is a set of equiprobable representations of the deposit that incorporates both grade and tonnage uncertainty. These simulations can be used to assess the uncertainty about key aspects of the project, such as strict control of the ore's quality that feeds the metallurgical plant. The framework explored takes advantage of the MAF and direct block simulation approaches which facilitate the joint simulation of large multi-element deposits." --

Book excerpt: "In open pit mine planning, the mine deposit is discretized into mining blocks, where the size of these mining blocks is defined by the mine's extracting equipment capacity and selectivity. Mining blocks are removed from the ground at different periods and sent to various destinations to be processed, stockpiled or dumped. Long-term production scheduling with multiple destinations is used in the mining industry, to provide guidelines for this extraction process, deciding the mining period and the destination policy that should apply for each mining block. The destination policy aims to optimize where to send the extracted material, in order to maximize the discounted cash flow according to the system capacity. Stochastic long-term production scheduling with multiple destinations includes the uncertainty associated with the grade's material in the optimization process, by maximizing the net present value, while reducing the risk of not meeting the different production targets at each destination. For deposits represented by a large number of mining blocks, the optimization leads to very complex and large mathematical programs, this cannot be solved to optimality using exact methods such as Branch and Bound. In this thesis, stochastic integer programming formulations are used to integrate the uncertainty directly into the optimization of the long-term production scheduling problem, and Parallel Tabu Search metaheuristics are presented as an approach to provide nearby optimal solution, in a reasonable amount of time. Two different approaches are presented here for the destination policy during the optimization process, based on the economic value of each block. The first approach uses a fixed destination policy, which sends each block to its more profitable destination before the optimization, whereas the second one considers optimizing the policy simultaneously within the optimization process of a life-of-mine schedule. The first part of this thesis, Chapter 3, presents three different implementations of parallel Tabu Search metaheuristics to solve a previously existing stochastic integer program, designed to provide optimal solution for the life-of-mine production schedule with multiples destinations, under geological uncertainty and under a fix destination policy. The first two methods allow a more extensive search of the solution space, the first using several independent Tabu Searches, whereas the second allows communication between the different Tabu Searches to broadcast information. The third method aims to provide a more intensive search by exploring different local area simultaneously, starting from a single solution. An application to a deposit of about 70,000 mining blocks is shown to assess the ability of all methods to generate a schedule with minimized deviations in practical amount of time.In the second part, Chapter 4, a stochastic integer program that jointly optimizes the destination and the year of extraction for each mining block is presented. A parallel multi-neighbourhood Tabu Search implementation is used to approximate the optimal solution of this formulation. The approach considers optimizing simultaneously both the destination and the period of extraction of each mining block by defining different types of neighbour solutions to explore. The computational complexity added by considering simultaneously extraction and destination variables is reduced by the use of a load balancing strategy to distribute the work equally among the different processors. An application at a deposit of about 100,000 mining blocks is made to show the ability of the method to generate a schedule where the production targets are met and the NPV is maximized in a practical amount of time." --

It provides geostatistics practitioners with a user-friendly interface, an interactive 3-D visualization, and a wide selection of algorithms. This practical book provides a step-by-step guide to using SGeMS algorithms. It explains the underlying theory, demonstrates their implementation, discusses their potential limitations, and helps the user make an informed decision about the choice of one algorithm over another. Users can complete complex tasks using the embedded scripting language, and new algorithms can be developed and integrated through the SGeMS plug-in mechanism. SGeMS was the first software to provide algorithms for multiple-point statistics, and the book presents a discussion of the corresponding theory and applications. Incorporating the full SGeMS software (now available from www.cambridge.org/9781107403246), this book is a useful user-guide for Earth Science graduates and researchers, as well as practitioners of environmental mining and petroleum engineering.
