Book excerpt: The thesis is devoted to the synthesis of homo- and heterometallic 3d-metal complexes with Schiff base ligands or derivatives of 1,2,4,5- tetrazine, together with the investigation of their structural and physico-chemical properties. This work can be divided in three parts. In the first part we have been mainly focused on the Schiff base ligands, derivatives of the salicylaldehyde and aminoalcohols. Thirteen heterometallic complexes were obtained and fully characterized. It has been shown that the synthesized compounds possess catalytic activity in the photochemical water oxidation, exhibit photoconducting properties in polymeric composites and can be used for the development of multifunctional materials of wide use. The second part describes the functionalization of Schiff base ligands by the introduction into their structure of electroactive tetrathiafulvalene and dithiolate moieties. Two new families of ligands were synthesized and characterized. The series of radicalcation salts and homo- and heterometallic dithiolene complexes together with the investigation of their physical properties have been described. The last part is devoted to the tetrazine based ligands. The main advantages of the tetrazine ring have been discussed. Two new ligands, derivative of picolylamine and their mono- and binuclear 3d-metal complexes are reported. In conclusion, perspectives of further research related to the described results were highlighted.

Book excerpt: Addition of a second metal to the selectively prepared monometallic or homobimetallic complexes results in formation of heterometallic products. Heterometallic Rh/Zn and Rh/Pd complexes were accessible by either order of metal addition. A Rh/Pt complex was also prepared by addition of [Rh(COD)Cl]2 to a homobimetallic Pt complex. When dissolved in CD3OD, the Rh/Pd and Rh/Pt complexes exhibit H/D exchange at their dpa methylene site, but the monometallic Rh, Pt, or Pd complexes do not. Paramagnetic heterometallic complexes involving Cu2+ were also prepared and were characterized through IR, EPR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Since Rh and Cu have different site-selectivities, Rh/Cu complexes could be prepared by either order of metal addition. Conversely, different products could be produced by changing the order of metal addition in the synthesis of Pd/Cu heterometallic complexes since both of these metals preferentially bind at the dpa site.

Book excerpt: HANDBOOK OF PYRROLIDONE AND CAPROLACTAM BASED MATERIALS Brings together, for the first time, a comprehensive review of all aspects of pyrrolidone- and caprolactam-based materials This comprehensive, six-volume set describes the broad technical universe of γ- and ε- lactams, reviewing in-depth the chemistry of the small lactam-based molecules, uncovering their unique properties and showing how they have enabled a myriad of commercially important applications. From synthesis, through production and into applications, this extensive work targets significant and recent trends in γ- and ε-lactam science and technology and addresses all key aspects of pyrrolidone- and caprolactam-based materials to produce a definitive overview of the field. Handbook of Pyrrolidone and Caprolactam Based Materials provides a detailed and modern portrait of the impact of pyrrolidone- and caprolactam-based materials on the world, as well as potential future possibilities. Volume One presents the chemistry of small lactam-based molecules and uncovers their unique properties. Volume Two covers polymeric materials, including polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinyl caprolactam, and reviews homopolymerization, copolymerization, controlled radical polymermization and acrylate based pyrrolidone polymerizations. Volume Three examines the physical chemistry and molecular interactions of pyrrolidone and caprolactam based materials. Volume Four expands upon the characterization theme from the third volume, and includes detailed discussions of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermal and mechanical properties, and imaging techniques. Volume Five explores pharmaceutical applications in both ingredients and materials, as well as the antimicrobial properties and applications of pyrrolidone and caprolactam-based materials, and their toxicology. Volume Six covers personal and home care, skin care, transdermal applications and wound care, oral care, adhesion related applications and digital applications such as inkjet technology. Handbook of Pyrrolidone and Caprolactam Based Materials will appeal to industrial scientists and engineers interested in polymer development and manufacturing. It will also benefit academic researchers working in the fields of chemistry, materials science, and chemical and process engineering.

Book excerpt: The development of advanced materials with preselected properties is one of the main goals of materials research. Of especial interest are electronics, high-temperature and supemard materials for various applications, as well as alloys with improved wear, corrosion and mechanical resistance properties. The technical challenge connected with the production of these materials is not only associated with the development of new specialised preparation techniques but also with quality control. The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide unique analytical tools for testing their qUality. This volume includes most of the lectures and contributions delivered at the NATO-funded Advanced Study Institute "Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology", which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from the 8th to the 21st of May, 1994 and attended by 73 participants from 21 countries. The aim of this ASI was to provide to the participants an overview of this rapidly expanding field. Fundamental aspects concerning the interactions and collisions on atomic, nuclear and solid state scale were presented in a didactic way, along with the application of a variety of techniques for the solution of problems ranging from the development of electronics materials to corrosion research and from archaeometry to environmental protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heteroarenes are among the most prevalent structural units in natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and other compounds of scientific or commercial interest. In the last decade, a broad range of novel synthetic methods has been developed to not only facilitate construction of the heteroarene motif, but to enable its modification through direct C H functionalization. This Handbook describes 117 key reagents for selective heteroarene functionalization reactions, including both traditional and transition metal-catalyzed C H functionalization. Since these reactions typically involve one heteroarene, a coupling partner and a catalyst, the handbook not only focuses on the catalyst itself but also contains other key reaction species. All the information compiled in this volume is also available in electronic format on Wiley Online Library. The 117 reagents represented here are but a small fraction of the ca. 5,000 reagents available in the electronic Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (e-EROS). e-EROS offers various search interfaces to locate reagents of interest, including chemical structure, substructure and reactions search modes. e-EROS is updated regularly with new and updated entries.

Book excerpt: Cross-coupling reactions involving C-H and C-X bond functionalisation are commonplace in natural product synthesis and natural products, therapeutic agents, biological probes, and advanced materials. Much attention has been given to understanding the mechanistic strategies used to achieve this, making this a hot topic in recent years. In this edited book, contributions from across the globe examine these strategies, with a particular focus on palladium and copper, as well as iron û an emerging element in this field. Reviewing the recent literature, the book presents an in-depth understanding of the field, guiding the reader to achieving the best synthetic strategies for aromatic functionalisation. Organic and Organometallic chemists, as well as natural product and pharmaceutical scientists, will find this an essential guide to a major transformation currently underway in synthetic chemistry.
