This study explores pre-service and in-service teachers' cognitions on the use of technologyenhanced foreign language learning tasks in the young learners' classroom. The study investigates the aspects of technology-enhanced tasks that participants consider as having a relevant impact on the development of learners' oral communicative competence, the criteria participants consider relevant for the design of such tasks in ways that cater for the needs of heterogeneous groups, and the support participants consider helpful in order to create and implement such tasks. Data were collected by carrying out three small-scale technology-enhanced projects in EFL primary school classrooms in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The findings suggest that technology-enhanced tasks are well suited to supporting heterogeneous groups of primary school children in speaking English. Andreas Kullick has taught at primary and secondary schools and has also worked as a teacher trainer in English language teaching. He holds a PhD from the University of Education in Schwäbisch Gmünd and has been a Senior Lecturer in English Language Teaching at the University of Augsburg since February 2024.

Book excerpt: There is a growing interest in second language acquisition (SLA) research in interdisciplinary approaches as that are by theoretical as much as practical need of understanding language learning and performance. Intellectually, second language acquisition research is now a recognised independent field of academic inquiry concerned with cognitive, psychological, social and pragmatic aspects of the phenomenon of second language development. SLA research tends to be both highly theoretical and experimental and as such lends itself well to the rigour of scientific research. It is in this context that the use of well articulated theories and concepts is increasingly seen as an essential research and ‘thinking’ tool for understanding and conducting SLA research. Processability Theory (Pienemann 1998) is one of the more prominent theories that have been applied across a number of second languages. The logic underlying processability theory is that at any stage during the developmental process, the learner can produce and comprehend only those target language linguistic forms which the current state of the language processor (i.e. the learner lantguage) can handle. It is therefore crucial to understand the architecture of the language processor and the way in which it handles second language development. The chapters included in this book will report on the various technical and theoretical aspects of experimental SLA research across a number of typologically different languages. The book includes detailed chapters outlining the key theoretical claims and methodological requirements underpiniing this kind of SLA research. Many of the subsequent chapters report Procesability Theory-related studies to the wider field of SLA research. Though the emphasis is on cross-linguistic experimental research undertaken within the parameters of Processability Theory, the book nevertheless sheds the light on the nexus between bilingualism and theory-driven second language acquisition research.

So sorgt der schulische Umgang mit Heterogenität für heftige Kontroversen in der Bildungspolitik, der Bildungsforschung und unter Lehrkräften. Um dies zu beantworten, werden zunächst die unterrichtsrelevanten Dimensionen von Heterogenität beleuchtet. Nach Betrachtung der Rolle des Schulsystems mit seinen Aufgaben und Funktionen werden die Differenzierungsstrategien für den Umgang mit Heterogenität analysiert. Dabei stehen die äußere und die innere Differenzierung mit ihren Möglichkeiten und Grenzen im Fokus. Welcher Umgang mit Heterogenität im Unterricht sich daraus ableiten lässt, wird am Beispiel des Musikunterrichts veranschaulicht. The views of scientific inquiry are discussed on both the class and the individual level. Finally, all these findings are brought together to paint a vivid picture of the investigated class. Die vorliegende Arbeit, eine explorative Fallstudie, bietet einen Einblick in ein authentisches Klassenzimmer, in dem Forschendes Lernen eingeführt wurde. Dazu wurde eine Lehrperson ein Jahr lang begleitet. Die Beforschung fokussierte auf Lernbegleitungsstrategien, den Umgang mit Diversität sowie den Sichtweisen der Schülerinnen und Schüler über Naturwissenschaften. Die Resultate zeigen eine schrittweise Einführung von Forschendem Lernen in vier Phasen, begleitet von vielfältigen Lernbegleitungsstrategien. Schließlich werden alle Ergebnisse zusammengeführt, um ein lebendiges Bild des untersuchten Unterrichts und der Personen zu zeichnen.
