Book Synopsis Principles of Endocrinology and Hormone Action by : Antonino Belfiore
Download or read book Principles of Endocrinology and Hormone Action written by Antonino Belfiore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge of the physiology of the endocrine system and hormone synthesis and release, transport, and action at the molecular and cellular levels. It presents essential as well as in-depth information of value to both medical students and specialists in Endocrinology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine. Although it is well established that the endocrine system regulates essential functions involved in growth, reproduction, and homeostasis, it is increasingly being recognized that this complex regulatory system comprises not only hormones secreted by the classic endocrine glands but also hormones and regulatory factors produced by many organs, and involves extensive crosstalk with the neural and immune system. At the same time, our knowledge of the molecular basis of hormone action has greatly improved. Understanding this complexity of endocrine physiology is crucial to prevent endocrine disorders, to improve the sensitivity of our diagnostic tools, and to provide the rationale for pharmacological, immunological, or genetic interventions. It is such understanding that this book is designed to foster.

Book Synopsis The Cytochemical Bioassay of Polypeptide Hormones by : J. Chayen
Download or read book The Cytochemical Bioassay of Polypeptide Hormones written by J. Chayen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cytochemical bioassay system was described in a short abstract in 1971, and more fully, in the cytochemical bioassay of corticotrophin, in 1972. Since then, cytochemical bioassays have been described for several polypeptide hormones, and these assays are already widely used. It is expedient that the subject should be reviewed, as it is in this monograph, by one writer who has had the good fortune to have taken part in the growth of cytochemistry from its early origins to its present position as the basis of possibly the most sensitive bioassay system currently available. However, it should be noted that major contributions have been made by many, both to the development of the subject and to the establishment of the bioassays. The object of this preface is to try to give some perspective to the growth of this subject and to record that the cytochemical bioassay system has been fostered by many outstanding scientists in an atmosphere of remarkable goodwill. To begin with, there could have been no cytochemical bioassays until cytochem istry had been converted from its rather unsure origins into a precise and quantitative form of cellular biochemistry. This was done with skill and enthusiastic dedication by my colleagues, Dr. Lucille Bitensky, Dr. F. P. Altman, Dr. R. G. L. W. Poulter and Mr. A. A. Silcox, first at the Royal College of Butcher, Dr.

Book excerpt: The Biochemistry of Polypeptide Hormones is intended to meet the needs particularly of advanced undergraduates, preclinical students and postgraduates, and provide an introduction to the research literature. All the main groups of polypeptide hormones are covered, and special chapters deal with structure-function relationships, hormone receptors, the role of second messengers and the applications of recombinant DNA technology.
Book Synopsis Microheterogeneity of Glycoprotein Hormones by : B.A. Keel
Download or read book Microheterogeneity of Glycoprotein Hormones written by B.A. Keel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven contributions review our knowledge of the characterization of glycoprotein hormone microheterogeneity, the relationships between biological activity and microheterogeneity, the endocrinological control mechanisms involved in the production of these forms and the underlying biochemical basis for glycoprotein hormone microheterogeneity. Organized so that the heterogeneity of each hormone from a variety of species is covered in detail, the peptide components and oligosaccaride stuctures of glycoprotein hormones are reviewed, and the heterogeneity of uncombined alpha and beta subunits is discussed.
Book Synopsis Trends in Regulatory Peptides by : Hubert Vaudry
Download or read book Trends in Regulatory Peptides written by Hubert Vaudry and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulatory peptides represent the most diverse and versatile family of messenger molecules. They are produced by all living organisms from bacteria to mammals. They are involved in a wide variety of biological functions. Biologically active peptides and their receptors thus constitute an unlimited source of inspiration for the development of innovative drugs and cosmetics. The present eBook is a unique collection of research articles and reviews that provide a representative examplification of the latest progress in regulatory peptide research.
Book Synopsis Recent Progress in Hormone Research by : Roy O. Greep
Download or read book Recent Progress in Hormone Research written by Roy O. Greep and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 30 presents the proceedings of the 1973 Laurentian Hormone Conference held at Mont Tremblant, Province of Quebec, Canada on August 26-31, 1973. The book presents papers on the regulation of the gonadotropins in primates, their neutralization by specific antibodies, and their role in oocyte maturation. The text also includes papers on the enzymatic interconversion of estrogens and on the concept of the mechanism of steroid hormone action. Papers on the thermogenic action of thyroid hormone related to active sodium transport are also considered. The book further tackles papers on the structure, heterogeneity, and activity of many of the lesser known hormones or hormone-like substances, such as the somatomedins A, B, and C, the epidermal growth factor, the insect hormones, parathyroid hormone, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, and prostaglandins. Endocrinologists and physiologists will find the text invaluable.

Book Synopsis The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health by : Kitty Verhoeckx
Download or read book The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health written by Kitty Verhoeckx and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Infogest” (Improving Health Properties of Food by Sharing our Knowledge on the Digestive Process) is an EU COST action/network in the domain of Food and Agriculture that will last for 4 years from April 4, 2011. Infogest aims at building an open international network of institutes undertaking multidisciplinary basic research on food digestion gathering scientists from different origins (food scientists, gut physiologists, nutritionists...). The network gathers 70 partners from academia, corresponding to a total of 29 countries. The three main scientific goals are: Identify the beneficial food components released in the gut during digestion; Support the effect of beneficial food components on human health; Promote harmonization of currently used digestion models Infogest meetings highlighted the need for a publication that would provide researchers with an insight into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of respective in vitro and ex vivo assays to evaluate the effects of foods and food bioactives on health. Such assays are particularly important in situations where a large number of foods/bioactives need to be screened rapidly and in a cost effective manner in order to ultimately identify lead foods/bioactives that can be the subject of in vivo assays. The book is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest and highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated and, as noted above, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for undergraduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.
