Book excerpt: This book selects leading, innovative and influential Chinese maritime judgments and presents full translation of them, with brief summary, to the readers so that they can have insights of how the Chinese maritime judges interpret, apply and develop Chinese maritime law in practice. China trades with other states in trillions of USD every year, and about 95% of the cargoes are carried by ocean-going ships calling at hundreds of Chinese ports each single day. Due to the enormous and steadily growing trade volume and shipping activities, foreign ships, companies and persons are often caught by the Chinese maritime law and court. The parties involved and their lawyers are more than ever enthusiastic to study Chinese maritime cases in order to deal with their own cases properly or, if possible, predict the potential problems and avoid the disputes outright. The book is appealing to and benefits worldwide law students, academics, practitioners and industrial people in the shipping, trade, insurance and financial fields. The book remedies to certain extent the situation that there is lack of authoritative sources available to foreign personnel to look into how Chinese justice system functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Khitans to the Jurchens & Mongols, A History of Barbarians in Triangle Wars & Quartet Conflicts is the third book of The Scourge of God Tetralogy. This is a book with comprehensive writeup of the barbarians’ history spanning more than one thousand years, from before the anno domini eras and inclusive of the expulsion of the Mongols from China. The subtitle about the barbarians in triangle wars & quartet conflicts is self-explanatory for the historical environment of different groups of barbarians successively rising up on the steppes to overpower the former with more savagery. This third book, while carrying a title with emphasis on the Khitans, the Jurchens and Mongols, also covered the Hsiung-nu (Huns), Hsien-pi (Xianbei), Tavghach (Tuoba), Juan-juan (Ruruans), Tu-chueh (Turks), Uygurs (Huihe), Kirghiz, Tibetans, Tanguts and southern barbarians. This book, being not merely about the barbarians, chronicled, without omission, an annalistic history of China’s dynasties including the Sui and Tang dynasties, the Five Dynasties, and the two Soong dynasties, with the interwoven theme of a civilization’s good fight against barbarism. There are many unique and groundbreaking contents, such as collation of the missing one-year history of the Mongols’ Central Asia campaigns and restitution of the unheard-of Mongol campaign in North Africa. This kind of discoveries is similar to this author’s trailblazing work done in other areas of sinology like rectifying the Huns’ war with the first Han dynasty emperor to 201 B.C. and correcting one year error in the Zhou dynasty’s interregnum (841-828 B.C. per Shi-ji/840-827 per Zhang Wenyu) in the duology The Sinitic Civilization.

The title "Twenty-Four Histories" dates from 1775 which was the 40th year in the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. This very special issue of Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series is dedicated to the life work of the journal's founder and main editor, Tu Kuo-ch'ing. Apart from his important role in the promotion of Taiwan literature, Professor Tu is a celebrated and much-studied poet who has been one of the most significant poets in the Modernist poetry movement in Taiwan since the 1960s. However, very little of his work is available to English language readers. This is unfortunate for both historic and aesthetic reasons. Therefore, it is our intention with this special issue to provide a representative selection of Tu's poetic oeuvre, as well as a number of studies of his verse in English translation. Our hope is that in this way readers outside of the Chinese-speaking world will be afforded the opportunity both to enjoy Tu's outstanding accomplishment as a poet and to gain an understanding of his contribution to the development of Modernist verse in the Chinese language.
