Brodell offers a series of twenty-eight portraits of forgotten but heroic figures, each accompanied by a brief biographical note. They are individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced dire punishment for being themselves. Brodell's detailed and witty paintings are modeled on Catholic holy cards, slyly subverting a religious template. The portraits and the texts offer intriguing hints of lost lives: cats lounge in the background of domestic settings; one of the figures is said to have been employed variously as “a prophet, a soldier, or a textile worker”; another casually holds a lit cigarette. Brodell did extensive research for each portrait, piecing together a life from historical accounts, maps, journals, paintings, drawings, and photographs, finding the heroic in the forgotten.

There were many opportunities for management to intervene and minimize the spread. Instead, the virus was allowed to spread unchecked among residents and staff. Almost as disturbing as the illness itself is the skill with which management was able to convince the majority of the staff and public that their response was exemplary given the circumstances. The decisions made behind closed doors rarely put the wellbeing of the residents first. Lack of accountability has been a longstanding problem in for-profit nursing homes. While the residents suffer and families are left in the dark, the nursing home industry is lobbying for less liability and less regulation. The employees of this industry are overworked, understaffed and forced to choose between providing patient care, protecting themselves and defending the actions of their corporations. Without more oversight, these companies will continue to get rich by taking advantage of those who are uninformed or left with no other options.

Potts Professor of Surgery, Division Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief. During 2008-2011, Dr. Mavroudis was chair of the Department of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery with a joint appointment in the Department of Bioethics at the Cleveland Clinic. During 2012-2019, he was Director of Congenital Heart Surgery, AdventHealth for Children in Orlando, and Professor of Surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 2020, he became Professor Emeritus of Surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and was recruited to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis as Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Mavroudis spends his leisure time training for athletic events. He has completed eleven marathons, eighty-five Olympic distance triathlons, and fifteen 70.3 Ironman Triathlons in the United States, Europe, and Africa. He and his family enjoy fishing trips, winery visits, SCUBA adventures, and sailing vacations. Dr. Mavroudis is happily married (forty years) to the former Martha Smith of Louisville, Kentucky. Together they have two children, Paula and Constantine.
