Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Nations Dear Girls and Boys: You have been working away with the queer, crooked marks printed in books until now you know how to read. How many splendid stories are waiting for you! To be sure they are locked up in books, but whoever can read has the magic key which opens the books. Will you enjoy this book? That depends upon what you like. Some of these stories are about girls and boys. Most of them learned to read and write, though their languages were very different from ours. They enjoyed fine stories as you do. Brave Joan of Arc could not read; but she could pray; and her prayers saved France. Of course you love your mother and father very dearly, and they love you. So you will understand why Ulysses went to war rather than hurt his baby boy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Defenders of Our Empire, Vol. 1: Biographies of the Nation's Heroes; No; 1. August, 1908 The present year will be a memorable one in the History of the British Army, for its re-organisation means the end of the most ancient military force of the realm, and also of the more modern one in the form of the Volunteers. Whether the changes that will make the Militia a part of the Regular Army, and practically turn the Volunteers into a Militia Force, will have the result of giving us a better Army than we had before, remains to be seen; but, in any case, the great publicity that has been given to the new forms of Service has brought home to the British Public a realization of the duty which one and all owe to those near and dear to them. While Great Britain holds command of the Sea, she is comparatively safe from invasion, but how long that command will be held none can tell. Nations were ever jealous of our power, and it behoves us to be always ready to strike if necessary, hence the necessity for every able-bodied man being trained to shoot straight. Never before have such vast armies been gathered together, or so many different nations and races been drawn into conflict. It is no exaggeration to say that the ultimate result of this great war will affect the future of every people on the face of the globe. Great Britain and her allies are lighting in defence of human freedom and the rights of small nations, and also to secure the blessings of an enduring peace. For many years Germany engaged in making elaborate military and naval preparations to crush rival States and found a world-wide empire which would bring her immense power and riches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes and Statesmen of America: Being a Popular Book of American Biography, Embracing the Lives of the Representative Great Men of the Nation But this wonderful story of progress is not all that should engage our attention at this period of national rejoicing. It is fitting that we should remember the great men of our history, to whose labors we owe all that we now enjoy, and that we should know the story of their lives and the means by which they accomplished the task allotted to them. America has no prouder record than that of the lives of her great men - none from which her children may draw greater in spiration, or learn more useful lessons. Not one of them owed his success to fortune or social position, but all were eminently self-made men 3 and their lives are full of hope and encouragement to those who would emulate their glorious examples. The writer of these pages has thought the present a proper time to offer to his countrymen this collection of brief biographies of the great men whose deeds illustrate the First Century of American Independence. There never was a time when such a work was more needed; there never was a time when our people needed, as they do now, to be taught that enduring success in public life can be attained only by honesty, disinterested patriotism, and fitness for the task assumed, and that he only is the truest lover and best servant of his country who is willing to sink all considerations of self in his desire to promote the welfare of his fellow - citizens. Such was the spirit that animated the men whose lives are recorded in these pages. They were often mistaken as to the means to be employed, or the course to be pursued, but never as to the end to be attained. They were will ing to Spend life and fortune in the effort to benefit their country, and faithfully and patiently sought to qualify themselves for the great work to which they were called. They have their reward in the grateful love and honor with which their country cherishes their mem ory, and their lives are lessons which each American should take deeply to heart. These are brief in duration and rapid in effect, but in the long inter vals between the years of strife the work of peace goes steadily forward, producing its changes more deliberately but with equal utility. The pioneer and the warrior are not the only figures that stand promi nent in national archives, not the only individuals that rise to the surface of things. There are many persons who attain heroic proportions not as results of bold adventure or military skill and daring, but through aid to the progress of mankind in less showy but equally important ways. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Norselands: Their Stories Retold Lands were peopled, came there Odin, a mighty god, out of the East, to rule and direct them: for he saw that these men with fair hair and blue eyes would do great deeds, and that, because of them, the North should be held in honour of all nations as long as the earth should last. Sad was he, knowing that, for him and his, the end of all would come ere the greatness of this people reached its height. Yet was he content, since he, the all-father, could teach them truth and honour and the love of glory, and to die joyfully, before the Twilight of the Gods crept over the earth, and since he knew that the kingdom of a gentler god would follow his. Now the world was upheld by the mighty ash tree, Yggdrasil, and round it on all sides was the sea; and beyond the sea, ' the frozen land of the giants - Jotunheim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Country in War and Relations With All Nations: A History of War Times, and American Heroes on Land and Sea ON the front of the palace at Versailles, is in golden letters the famous inscription, To All the Glories of France, and the splendor of the sentiment has pre served from the ruthless hands of revolution, and from defacement by enemies in temporary triumph, the marbles of the magnificent edifice and the proud letters of gold. The memories of nations have many forms of expression, and it is not those distinguished by pomp that seem to have been the most certainly preserved and to possess the greater assurance of perpetuity. In the mounds of the ancient cities on the Euphrates, in the hills of desolation that mark the sites of mighty capitals, are found cylinders of burnt clay on which are the records of the dynasties that have otherwise perished, of peoples among whose memorials no tower stands to tell the tale of the race, no arch abides to speak of the vanished ages or locate in the abyss beyond the era of history, the Empires that are lost. It is the cylinder of clay that has the quality of immortality. Still more in the printed leaves of our time Will be found the pages that minister to the pride of people, and on Which are inscribed the lessons of the rise and fall of nations that Shall enshrine the lives of great men and apply the excellence of good deeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old World Hero Stories IT is not so many years since the school history was practi cally a dry chronicle of discoveries, settlements, and wars. A narrative that was in any degree personal and anecdotal was gazed upon askance as being necessarily unscholarly and undignified. Discoveries and settlements and wars there must be, and accounts of them must be written and made familiar; but the one and only way to bring past issues into the life of a child with any vividness is first to interest him in the actors themselves. Carlyle says that history is at bot tom the history of the great men who have worked here. There is no better introduction to the study of the Augustan Age than the story of the life of Augustus; no better way to arouse interest in the philosophy of Plato and Socrates than the tales of their lives.
