Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After two decades of teaching the subject, this distinguished Old Testament scholar compiles a synthesis that takes into account and organizes the factors that are at work in the act of understanding and interpreting literary texts: producer, receiver, text, subject matter, language. Two chapters deal with normative interpretation and the sociology of interpretation. The author, who was a learned and independent thinker, in bondage to no theory, said of this work that it aimed at density without obscurity, order without showiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermeneutics introduces English-speaking readers to a field of increasing importance in contemporary philosophy and theology—hermeneutics, the theory of understanding, or interpretation. Hermeneutics is concerned with the character of understanding, especially as it is related to interpreting linguistic texts. It goes beyond mere philological methodology, however, to questions of the philosophy of language, the nature of historical understanding, and ultimately the roots of interpretation in existential understanding. Palmer principally treats the conception of hermeneutics enunciated by Heidegger and developed into a “philosophical hermeneutics” by Hans-Georg Gadamer. He provides a brief overview of the field of hermeneutics by surveying some half-dozen alternate definitions of the term and by examining in detail the contributions of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Wilhelm Dilthey. In the “Manifesto” which concludes the book, Palmer suggests the potential significance of hermeneutics for literary interpretation. When the context of interpretation is pressed to its limits, hermeneutics becomes the philosophical analysis of what is involved in every act of understanding. In this context, hermeneutics becomes relevant not simply to the humanistic disciplines, in which linguistic and historical understanding are crucial, but to scientific forms of interpretation as well, for it asserts the principles involved in any and every act of interpretation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hermeneutical Manual: Or Introduction to the Exegetical Study of the Scriptures of the New Testament The alternative title prefixed to this volume has been assumed, rather than the simple designation of "Hermeneutics of the New Testament," chiefly for the purpose of indicating, that a certain latitude may be expected in it, both in regard to the range of subjects discussed, and in regard to the measure and method of treatment respectively applied to them. Works, indeed, could readily be named, bearing the title of Hermeneutics, which have taken nearly as much license in both respects, as I need to vindicate for myself in connexion with the present publication. But the term is strictly applicable only to such works as unfold the principles of Interpretation, and give to these a regular, consecutive, and scientific treatment. Of this sort is the comparatively recent work of Cellerier (Manuel d'Hermeneutique, 1852, )which, however objectionable in respect to the principles it occasionally enunciates, is one of the most systematic and complete in form, - treating, after a pretty long introduction, successively of the Psychological elements and aspects of the subject - the Grammatical, the Historical, the Scriptuary (or more peculiarly Biblical, ) the Doctrinal. So affirms Dr. Wilbur M. Smith, well-known Bible scholar. Milton S. Terry's book on 'Biblical Hermeneutics' (the science of interpretation) is conveniently divided into three main areas: Part I -- Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics Part II -- Principles of Biblical Hermeneutics Part III -- History of Biblical Interpretation This ideal standard textbook abstains from dogmatism and adheres strictly to the method of scientific and conscientious inquiry. It ranks as a classic in its field. Adapted to meet the practical needs of most students studying the Word of God, 'Biblical Hermeneutics' is a model text for interpreting the Bible.
