Book Synopsis Tobacco or Health? by : Knut-Olaf Haustein
Download or read book Tobacco or Health? written by Knut-Olaf Haustein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Science tends to generalize, and generaliza tions mean simplifications . . . . And generaliza tions are also more satisfying to the mind than details. Of course, details and generalizations must be in proper balance: Generalizations can be reached only from details, while it is the generalization which gives value and interest to the detail:' . . . (A. Szent-Gyorgy, Science 1964) The first edition of this book, published in German as Tabak abhiingigkeit in 2001, was prompted by the fact that no single volume was available in Germany or elsewhere summarising the adverse repercussions of cigarette smoking on human health. As far as my own research was able to ascertain, the last comprehensive work dealing with this subject was writ ten in Germany by the Dresden internist, F. Lickint, whose Tabak und Organismus was published in 1939 by the Hip pokrates-Verlag. All subsequent monographs in this field have tended to focus on detailed aspects, and there has been no shortage of publications on subjects such as how smokers can quit smoking, healthy eating for smokers etc. Friends and colleagues abroad have urged me to prepare an English language version of Tabakabhiingigkeit. In gladly complying with this suggestion, I have intentionally prepared an up dated and slightly enlarged new edition, taking account of the rapidly proliferating literature on the subject up to the start of 2002. The harmful sequelae of smoking are played down by politicians in many industrialised countries, including Ger many.

Book Synopsis Medium Design by : Keller Easterling
Download or read book Medium Design written by Keller Easterling and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Design the World: Working Without Solutions In Medium Design everyone is a designer. But design, in this case, inverts the typical focus on object over its settings to concentrate on the medium—the matrix space between objects, events, and ideological declarations. It disrupts habitual modern approaches to the world’s intractable dilemmas—from climate cataclysm to inequality to concentrations of authoritarian power. In a series of case studies dealing with everything from automation and migration to explosive urban growth and atmospheric changes, Medium Design offers spatial tools for innovation and global decision-making to challenge the authority of more familiar legal or economic approaches. From this perspective, solutions are mistakes and ideologies are unreliable guides. Rather than the modern desire for the new, designers find more sophistication in relationships between emergent and incumbent technologies. Encouraging entanglement, medium design does not try to eliminate problems but rather to put them together in productive combinations. And in the process of reconceptualizing design, Easterling puzzles over bulletproof powers, Stanley Kubrick, ISIS recruits, literary characters, and iconic activists in the hope of outwitting political deadlocks and offering forms of activism for modulating power and temperament in organizations of all kinds.

Book Synopsis Benign Anorectal Disorders by : Nisar Ahmad Chowdri
Download or read book Benign Anorectal Disorders written by Nisar Ahmad Chowdri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management of benign anorectal disorders is challenging for the treating surgeons as the patients are highly distressed, the symptoms are always alarming, and surgical intervention may be associated with lifelong disabilities such as loss of sphincter control. Written by highly experienced colorectal surgeons, this book provides detailed notes on optimal management of these disorders including pre- and post-operative management. Chapters cover the entire range of benign disorders such as hemorrhoids, fissure, fistula-in-ano, anorectal injuries, anal incontinence, rectal prolapse, pelvic floor disorders, benign tumors and ulcers, and strictures. Chapters on surgical anatomy and physiology equip the surgeons with the information necessary to understand the complex anatomy and functioning of this region which makes surgery all the more difficult. Benign Anorectal Disorders is an essential reading for colorectal surgeons, general surgeons, fellows-in-training and the post-graduate students.
