Book excerpt: IN THE YEAR 1458, Andreas de Bonomo, a struggling novice monk, is sent on a mission to infiltrate an ancient Christian sect flourishing in the Italian Alps. Along the way, Andreas meets a travelling preacher, who introduces him to the mysterious Vallenses. As they accept him into their society, he finds himself unexpectedly sympathetic toward their simple faith, which places him in the center of a conflict between the mighty medieval Church and the primitive Christians of the valleys. When intimidation and violence begin, Andreas must decide whether to follow the traditions of his ancestors or open himself to those he once named heretics. Will he destroy the Vallenses or embrace them?

Excerpt: Early on the morning of Easter Monday, 1871, in company with a devoted Italian pastor, I left my temporary home in the comfortable "Grand Hotel," in the little town of Pallanza, to gratify a long-felt desire of visiting that part of Europe made sacred by ages of heroic suffering and courageous endurance for faith and fatherland—the valleys of Piedmont."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heresy and Religious Life in Fourteenth Century PiedmontbyJohn Thomas SchollThis dissertation is a case study in medieval religious life. Using a remarkable collection of extant sources, including inquisitorial records, episcopal protocols, and castellan's rolls, I examine an exciting period in the religious history of Chieri, a town located near Turin in the Italian Piedmont, between the mid-1360s and 1412. These decades saw the rise and fall of a non-Catholic movement whose participants rejected almost every doctrine of the Catholic Church and believed that the devil ruled the world. More than one hundred people participated in the movement, and it received the attention of at least three inquisitors. Seventeen people (fifteen of them already dead) were condemned and burned. During that time period, there were also some key developments within the local Catholic Church. In 1383, twelve laymen founded the town's largest hospital, named in honor of the Virgin Mary, and the speedy participation of many donors ensured that the hospital became almost a public work of piety. In 1399, a large number of Chieri's people turned out for an extraordinary procession, crying "Mercy" as they marched to the all the town's churches. Finally, in 1405, under the leadership of the cathedral chapter, the community began a major reconstruction of the Duomo, the town's most important church. I argue that these key developments in the local Catholic Church were intimately linked to the story of Chieri's non-Catholic movement. At first, Catholic and non-Catholic religiosity flourished side by side, yet later, when the community renewed its commitment to Catholicism at the turn of the fourteenth century, the non-Catholic movement disappeared. Further, I argue that individuals used Chieri's religious environment to craft distinctive, personal religious experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Inquisition of the Middle Ages in three volumes is a groundbreaking work on the subject of Inquisition, written by Henry Charles Lea, one of the main authorities on the subject. His goal was to present an impartial account of the institution as it existed during the earlier period. In order to accurately appreciate the process of its development and the results of its activity the author takes in consideration the factors controlling the minds and souls of men during these times. He recapitulates nearly all the spiritual and intellectual movements of the Middle Ages, glancing at the condition of society in certain of its phases. Beginning with the state of church in 12th and 13th century, the study includes various forms of heresy emerging throughout the European continent from Spain and France west, to Slavic countries in Eastern Europe. Lea particularly deals with various fields of inquisitorial activity, notably its utilization in political purposes. Though his study of the Inquisition was criticized for anti-Spanish bias, it is thoroughly researched and contains interesting details surrounding this notorious institution.
