Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Synopsis The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.
Book Synopsis Pesticide Safety: A Reference Manual for Private Applicators - 3rd Edition by : Shannah M. Whithaus

This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual covers information essential for anyone using pesticides on California farms, including growers, managers and employees in an easy-to-use format; now with color photographs and illustrations. Read this book carefully to prepare for the Private Aapplicator Certification test. DPR uses this test to certify farm owners, leaseholders, and managers who may have to purchase restricted materials, as well as farm employees who supervise pesticide handlers or will be training handlers and fieldworkers to work safely around pesticides. A list of knowledge expectations (descriptions of what you should know after reading the chapter) are given at the beginning of each chapter to guide you as you study. Individual knowledge expectations appear alongside relevant content throughout each chapter, which will help you focus on the information that is most likely to appear on the examination. Covers pesticide labels, worker safety (handlers and fieldworkers), how to mix and apply pesticides, calibration, the hazards of pesticide use including heat related illness, and pesticide emergencies. Presents an overview of integrated management principles An appendix includes sample training forms for pesticide handlers and fieldworkers.
Book Synopsis Rational Pesticide Use by : Keith Joseph Brent
Download or read book Rational Pesticide Use written by Keith Joseph Brent and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing concern among scientists, farmers and the general public that pesticides are being applied ever more widely but with less and less discretion. This book brings together a range of experts to discuss how crop protection chemicals can be used more rationally, so as to maximise benefits in yield and quality while minimising environmental and economic costs. The book is based on the ninth Long Ashton Symposium and is organised into four sections. The first, environment, examines to what extent current pesticide use is affecting the environment and human welfare, and what changes in practice are justified. The second, application, assesses progress in performance and safety in the use of pesticides, while the next section, resistance, looks at problems and shortcomings arising from the appearance of resistant strains of pests, and considers strategies for surmounting these difficulties. The final section, forecast and pest management, asks whether existing methods of assessing risks are acceptable and seeks ways of rending decision making in crop protection more rational.

Book Synopsis Precise Chemical Application Technology for Horticultural Crops by : Xiaolan Lv
Download or read book Precise Chemical Application Technology for Horticultural Crops written by Xiaolan Lv and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant chemical protection uses professional spraying machines to transport chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides to the target sites for pest, disease, and weed control in crop production. Such practices play a vital role in ensuring the supply of food, fruits, and vegetables for human beings. However, traditional plant chemical application methods suffer from excessive pesticide use, low utilization rate, and high labor intensity due to the backwardness of the existing sprayers, the single atomization technology, etc. In order to boost the progress of modern agriculture, plant chemical protection should be oriented toward efficient, accurate, and intelligent application technologies and equipment. Smart chemical application technology and efficient equipment can effectively reduce pesticide usage, mitigate the harm of chemicals to the environment, and lower labor intensity, realizing the sustainable development of disease and pest control of horticultural crops, ensuring food safety, and maintaining crop yield and quality.

Download or read book Crop Spraying and the Health of Residents and Bystanders written by Great Britain. Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses a complex and controversial issue: the human health risks associated with the use of agricultural pesticides. Some people are extremely concerned about their potential exposure to pesticides, arising because they occupy properties adjacent to farmland or because they have (or have had) access to such land, for example when using footpaths. The official position in the UK in response to these concerns has been that a robust approach to the assessment of human health risks associated with pesticide exposure already exists; and that there is no scientific case for taking additional measures, such as the introduction of no-spray buffer zones, to protect members of the public who may be in the vicinity of a sprayed area. But those who consider themselves to be adversely affected by pesticide spraying have not been reassured, and have continued to campaign for the adoption of more precautionary measures.
