Book excerpt: A funny, disturbing, touching, mad, thoughtful, adult, childlike novel of rather disarming originality. The book begins with a woman's impregnation by a swarm of monarch butterflies and culminates in a confrontation between the inventor of a compassion-arousing super drug and all of the tenth graders in Massachusetts. This book can be read as a big sweeping myth of America and the modern age, but if you prefer to enter its world and explore its oddly angled rooms and strangely shaped alcoves for their own peculiar sake, it allows for that as well. In any case, I can promise one thing: it won't remind you of anything.

This book was released on 2014-11-23 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A person can have many soul mates in a lifetime but, each person has only one twin soul in each life. This belief taught to me by my grandmother is one that has always filled me with wonder. As a young child, she often sat next to me in front of the fire blazing brightly in our tipi and spoke of the legend of the twin souls. The legend is as old as creation itself. It is said that as the creator was making human beings he was surrounded by souls to place in them. The creator decided to take a single soul and split it in half creating twin souls. He then took the two twin souls and touched them together as light as a butterfly’s kiss. The twin souls were then separated and placed respectively into man and woman. The creator lightly touched them together so that when they meet one day, they will recognize the other’s soul as their twin. This is because they have already met at the beginning of creation and will immediately feel as if they have known each other forever. I am “Sumanitu taka kici mani wiya” which means she who walks with the wolf and live with my elderly grandmother, Shetawahki, who is a revered elder and medicine woman of the Lakota Sioux Nation and part of the Roaming Wolf Sioux Tribe.

Book excerpt: In the 1970s, John Denver was America’s biggest-selling solo star, a singer whose crossover appeal drew millions of fans from the worlds of folk, pop, and country music. Beneath the tranquil surface of his music and his clear tenor voice, however, lurked a darker side to Denver’s character. The wholesome figure who cavorted with the Muppets was a troubled alcoholic. Delving into the singer’s past, John Collis found a man who was considerably more complex than the placid surface of his music might suggest. And, in looking at Denver’s career, Collis assesses his contribution not only to the world of music, but to the culture of which he was both a protagonist and a victim.

Book Synopsis Little Girl Black by : Cassandra Hudson
Download or read book Little Girl Black written by Cassandra Hudson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-05-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a work of fiction. Places, events, and situations in this story are purely fictional. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is coincidental. Little Girl Black confronts colorism and the black sheep syndrome and the many shades it comes in. That old saying don’t judge a book by its cover—I say open the book up and slowly read the literature in side, cover to cover, before forming an opinion. You may be pleasantly surprised on what you read. Bump what you hear, boss up, and form your own opinions. This book and all my Little Girl Black poetry books volumes 1 to 6 celebrate and confront dreams, religion, marriage, unfairness, sex, friendship, racism, strength, judgments, fantasy, love, education, families, power, and death, as well as many other situations. Life will sometimes come to you whether you’re looking for it or not. Here comes life kicking down your doors; it just walks in and puts its filthy feet up on your clean glass table, getting extremely comfortable, and you say to yourself, “What the hell is going on?” This is a good time to get down on your knees and give it all to the Lord, like in the play Your Arms Are Too Short to Box with God. Please let him do his job, but take notes. Ding, ding! The school of life is in session. The black sheep syndrome is not because you’re an African American or black or brown. Yes, being racist or racism plays a big part when a whole race is condemned because of the pigment in their skin, but there are little girl blacks and little boy blacks in every race that lives in every family. No one can stop you from dreaming. Your dreams live in your heart, mind, body, and soul; so every time you close your eyes to dream a little dream, hum a little tune, or recite a little poem, stop and introduce yourself to your destiny and say, “Hello, I’m so please to finally meet you. I have been waiting for you.” Yes, colorism. Racism within our own race—we all play a part. I say no matter what shade of chocolate you may be, love yourself, live to be mature, and dream to succeed and achieve everything your little heart desires. Unfairness or jealousy and looking down upon someone for whatever reasons and sometimes no reasons at all, just because who you look like or who you belong to—this syndrome is taught and learned and follows that little girl black or little boy black for generations. I say to all of you bullies and dream-stealers, shame on you. You need to check yourself!
Book Synopsis Give Peace a Chant by : Dario Martinelli
Download or read book Give Peace a Chant written by Dario Martinelli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers a unique analysis of social protest in popular music. It presents theoretical descriptions, methodological tools, and an approach that encompasses various fields of musicology, cultural studies, semiotics, discourse analysis, media studies, and political and social sciences. The author argues that protest songs should be taken as a musical genre on their own. He points out that the general approach, when discussing these songs, has been so far that of either analyzing the lyrics or the social context. For some reason, the music itself has been often overlooked. This book attempts to fill this gap. Its central thesis is that a complete overview of these repertoires demands a thorough interaction among contextual, lyrical, and musical elements together. To accomplish this, the author develops a novel model that systemizes and investigates musical repertoires. The model is then applied to four case studies, those, too, chosen among topics that are little (or not at all) frequented by scholars.
