Henry's Law Constant Program calculates the Henry's Law Constant (air/water coefficient) from SMILES notation structure using both the group contribution and the bond contribution method of Hine and Mookerjee. This version of the program features many new fragments with more recent experimental data so that most chemical structures can be calculated. The program will run on any IBM® or IBM-compatible computer with 640K RAM. Henry's Law Constant Program is used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and it will be valuable for environmental chemists, engineers, or anyone who wants to calculate the Henry's Law Constant for partitioning a chemical between water and air.

Book excerpt: WHEN THE SERIAL KILLER IS THE GOOD GUY, EVIL DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE... The Honorable Judge Harry Shem has survived what many did not. As a frightened and traumatized ten-year-old boy imprisoned in a Holocaust concentration camp, he was faced with either a gruesome death or an invitation to become a Kapo, surgeon, and murderer. He chose the latter. Now forty years later, entrusted with sentencing New York City's most heinous criminals to their deserved fates, Harry is motivated by the sheer goal of being granted asylum into one of the Old Testament's Cities of Refuge. After arming himself with his previously learned surgical skills and the ever guiding light of the Torah, he ceremonially performs organ transplant surgery on the condemned in the privacy of his very own prison. When Shem's prisoners begin disappearing without a trace, he attempts to remain camouflaged. Unfortunately, the clarity he has enjoyed for many years is clouded by one man who moves in across the street Da Commandant. In order for Harry's mind to confront his past and protect his present, he must come to terms with the very obstacle that has thus far controlled his life and presently threatens his very existence guilt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solubility of gases and liquids in liquids is of great importance in large areas of operations based on chemical concepts. Phenomena have appeared to be so varied that even experts have from time to time remarked on the difficulty of seeing a consistent pattern. Now for the first time the essential pattern of all known gas solubility data is set out in a graphic form for all to see. The continuous merging of the gas-liquid systems and the liquid-liquid systems is also illustrated. The pattern opens the way to rational predictions. The new data given for the lower alkanes and alkenes, the three methylamines, ammonia, bromomethane, and chloroethane, together with my previously reported data on hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl ether, chloromethane, and sulfur dioxide, have been obtained by a bubbler-manometer procedure which is fully described. Not only are these data of significance in many chemical processes, but they have also been vital to the development of the overall essential pattern covering all gases. The book is for chemists, chemical engineers, biotechnologists, certain physi cists, and teachers and students in these disciplines. It is a book for all those who are concerned with the use and inculcation of the fundamental, even rudimentary, principles of chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers are ubiquitous and pervasive in industry, science, and technology. These giant molecules have great significance not only in terms of products such as plastics, films, elastomers, fibers, adhesives, and coatings but also less ob viously though none the less importantly in many leading industries (aerospace, electronics, automotive, biomedical, etc.). Well over half the chemists and chem ical engineers who graduate in the United States will at some time work in the polymer industries. If the professionals working with polymers in the other in dustries are taken into account, the overall number swells to a much greater total. It is obvious that knowledge and understanding of polymers is essential for any engineer or scientist whose professional activities involve them with these macromolecules. Not too long ago, formal education relating to polymers was very limited, indeed, almost nonexistent. Speaking from a personal viewpoint, I can recall my first job after completing my Ph.D. The job with E.I. Du Pont de Nemours dealt with polymers, an area in which I had no university training. There were no courses in polymers offered at my alma mater. My experience, incidentally, was the rule and not the exception.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world is widely contaminated with damaging chemicals, and companies create thousands of new, potentially dangerous chemicals each year. Due to the difficulty and expense of obtaining accurate measurements and the unreliability of reported values, we know surprisingly little about the properties of these contaminants. Determining the properties of chemicals is critical to judging their impact on environmental quality and in making decisions about emission rates, clean-up, and other important public health issues. Chemical Property Estimation describes modern methods of estimating chemical properties, methods which cost much less than traditional laboratory techniques and are sufficiently accurate for most environmental applications. Estimation methods are used to screen chemicals for testing, design monitoring and analysis methods, design clean-up procedures, and verify experimental measurements. The book discusses key methods for estimating chemical properties and considers their relative strengths and weaknesses. Several chapters are devoted to the partitioning of chemicals between air, water, soil, and biota; and properties such as solubility, vapor pressure, and chemical transport. Each chapter begins with a review of relevant theory and background information explaining the applications and limitations of each method. Sample calculations and practical advice on how and when to use each method are included as well. Each method is evaluated for accuracy and reliability. Computer software, databases, and internet resources are evaluated, as well as other supplementary material, such as fundamental constants, units of measure, and more.
