Book excerpt: UK farmers currently receive nearly [pound]3 billion a year in subsidies under the Common Agricultural Policy. However, CAP reforms agreed in June 2003 will mean a step-change in the way agricultural subsidies will be paid in the future, based on the concept of 'decoupling' which will break the link between production and subsidy, and will give farmers the opportunity to focus on consumer market demand. This report by the National Audit Office examines a range of issues involved in farm business development support in England and makes recommendations for improvements to the operation of existing schemes which run to 2006 and the next phase of schemes to run from 2007 to 2013. Issues discussed include: DEFRA's strategy for sustainable farming covering the food chain as a whole; development scheme take-up levels, budget spend, application and assessment procedures, impact and evaluation; business support needs including advice and training, and tailoring schemes to meet local needs; comparisons with rural development schemes in Wales and Northern Ireland, in a number of other countries in Europe, as well as in the United States, Canada and New Zealand

Book excerpt: Radical reforms to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) agreed in June 2003 will mean a step-change in the way agricultural subsidies will be paid in the future, including introduction of a single farm payment based on the concept of 'decoupling' which will break the link between production and subsidy, and will give farmers the opportunity to focus on consumer market demand. Following on from a NAO report (HCP 1028, session 2003-04; ISBN 010292824X) published in September 2004, the Committee's report examines the Government's plans to help manage the transition from a subsidy-led to a market-based environment, what forms of farm business support should be provided and to whom, and how to deliver this advice and support most effectively.

Download or read book The Resilient Farmer written by Doug Avery and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day I watch my farm burn. Day after day, the sky is a relentless, empty blue. As our land dries up, all my hopes have turned to vapour, lost in that wide, blue yonder. And so begins Doug Avery’s story of emotional resilience in the face of what at times seemed a hopeless situation. The South Island farmer suffered terribly during eight years of drought. His farm was depleted and so was he, to the point of severe depression. The Resilient Farmer is Doug’s powerful example of how to get life back on track. With candour and wisdom, he tells his story of turning desperation into determination, embracing risk, navigating change and, on top of everything, enduring monumental earthquakes. An inspiring tale of how one man overcame heartbreaking adversity to live a fruitful life and help others.
