Book excerpt: A fascinating and unprecedented ethnography of animal sanctuaries in the United States In the past three decades, animal rights advocates have established everything from elephant sanctuaries in Africa to shelters that rehabilitate animals used in medical testing, to homes for farmed animals, abandoned pets, and entertainment animals that have outlived their “usefulness.” Saving Animals is the first major ethnography to focus on the ethical issues animating the establishment of such places, where animals who have been mistreated or destined for slaughter are allowed to live out their lives simply being animals. Based on fieldwork at animal rescue facilities across the United States, Elan Abrell asks what “saving,” “caring for,” and “sanctuary” actually mean. He considers sanctuaries as laboratories where caregivers conceive and implement new models of caring for and relating to animals. He explores the ethical decision making around sanctuary efforts to unmake property-based human–animal relations by creating spaces in which humans interact with animals as autonomous subjects. Saving Animals illustrates how caregivers and animals respond by cocreating new human–animal ecologies adapted to the material and social conditions of the Anthropocene. Bridging anthropology with animal studies and political philosophy, Saving Animals asks us to imagine less harmful modes of existence in a troubled world where both animals and humans seek sanctuary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secret to Helping More Animals What would it take to give all the animals the kind of lives that they deserve? How do we work together to attain this vision? The answer to both of these questions can be found within the hearts of the animal advocates and the beloved furry friends they help. The secret is joy. Read on and uncover the infinite power of joy that is already present on your life-saving and life-enhancing journey of giving to the animals. A life of giving to animals offers amazing gifts of love, purpose, and contentment. But instead of experiencing joy and fulfillment, animal advocates often find themselves overwhelmed, sad, and depleted. Clinical psychologist and lifelong animal lover Dr. Linda Harper offers insight into the personality of the animal advocate and provides strategies to help face the challenges and find the gifts of their life-saving and life-enhancing journey. When we balance the desires and needs of each unique giving heart, we are at our best and joy flows freely and abundantly. Joy is the self-perpetuating, contagious, and powerful energy that is needed to bring us together to create a better world. With a foreword and contributions by animal advocate Faith Maloney, Dr. Harper's newest book aims to help individuals realize the gifts of their purposeful journey of helping animals, replenish their giving hearts, and become their best as they work toward creating a kinder world not only for animals, but for all living beings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many ways that people are harmed by mankind's treatment of and disregard for wildlife, including human suffering and death. Accidents and fatalities can occur from hunting-related activities, while at the same time species are in danger of extinction due to both legal and illegal hunting (poaching) and to the illegal wildlife trade, including the demand for body parts largely focused in Asian countries. The wildlife trade also partially funds terrorist and criminal groups and often fuels corruption. Animals share the dangers of infectious diseases with humans and suffer the consequences of climate change along with us: heat waves, wildfires, and extreme weather. Wildlife (both vertebrates and invertebrates) also benefit mankind by helping to provide a healthy planet in spite of humans' thoughtless efforts to damage it and in spite of what amounts to a "war on wildlife." When people do what they can to help and protect wildlife, we humans almost invariably benefit as much as or more than the animals we help.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2020, COVID-19, the Australia bushfires, and other global threats served as vivid reminders that human and nonhuman fates are increasingly linked. Human use of nonhuman animals contributes to pandemics, climate change, and other global threats which, in turn, contribute to biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and nonhuman suffering. Jeff Sebo argues that humans have a moral responsibility to include animals in global health and environmental policy. In particular, we should reduce our use of animals as part of our pandemic and climate change mitigation efforts and increase our support for animals as part of our adaptation efforts. Applying and extending frameworks such as One Health and the Green New Deal, Sebo calls for reducing support for factory farming, deforestation, and the wildlife trade; increasing support for humane, healthful, and sustainable alternatives; and considering human and nonhuman needs holistically. Sebo also considers connections with practical issues such as education, employment, social services, and infrastructure, as well as with theoretical issues such as well-being, moral status, political status, and population ethics. In all cases, he shows that these issues are both important and complex, and that we should neither underestimate our responsibilities because of our limitations, nor underestimate our limitations because of our responsibilities. Both an urgent call to action and a survey of what ethical and effective action requires, Saving Animals, Saving Ourselves is an invaluable resource for scholars, advocates, policy-makers, and anyone interested in what kind of world we should attempt to build and how.
