Book excerpt: Exactly how Collingwood had been built, how she had assumed a completely new identity and personality, just what frightening, sinister debts had been incurred in the process I didn't yet know. The final piece of the puzzle was coming whenever I was ready to listen, but I already dearly loved the person incurring the debts and I already understood why they had been incurred. Nancy was fleeing from a first degree murder charge, a case no doubt still open on the books of the Hoboken Police Department. I had followed those Waterfront Commission hearings Warren brought up with some interest back in 1966. When he mentioned them this morning, I vaguely recalled a murdered federal informant by the name of Deluca being mentioned by several witnesses. It may not have been the same guy. I may have remembered the name wrong. But if he was, the case was open with the FBI as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patricia Langstrom, Doctoral Fellow from Monmouth University, studying to be a forensic Anthropologist, and Archeologist, was barely five foot tall. Her long red hair was in a ponytail, and her small frame was fit after years of running, exercising, and making ready to embark on a career of archeological/anthropological digs in far away, exotic locations. When her fiancée died in Afghanistan at the hands of the Taliban, and she finally reined in the emotions of her loss, she found the subject for her final dissertation. Somewhere in the Buriram Province, a 300 meter long “Reclining Buddha” sat waiting to be found. The last text she’d gotten from Neal said he was looking at something there that she would really be interested in. He also began to tell her something else… when the text abruptly ended. She finally had everything in hand, and the team was formed. Just after they arrived at the site, and she found an anomaly inside one of the ancient cloisters used by the monks centuries ago, Taliban attacked and killed everyone...but her. After finding her way into the darkness, and being essentially buried alive, she found what many had been looking for. Dead tired from running, hiding, and with the adrenaline of the moment finally draining from her small body, she laid down to sleep before beginning her investigation of the site, as well as seeing if there was some way to extricate herself from the darkness of the massive chamber. She woke outside, close to a road that had been destroyed in an avalanche. At the other end of the road was an ancient citadel. Skeletons lay everywhere, the main citadel all but destroyed, and the defenders left to rot. She found a book that told most of the story, but her mind wanted more. All she wanted was to return to the cavern, make her investigation, and find her way home… but this possible medieval structure, set, as far as she knew, in Afghanistan, piqued her curiosity. She wasn’t aware that she had been whisked to another world, and another time. Once she was made aware of the facts, she was offered a choice. Return home, make her dissertation, and live without knowing why the citadel was in ruins. Or stay in this world, travel back in time, find the clues to what happened here centuries before...and find a way to stop it. She made her choice...

This book documents the gang's bumpy ride from its origins as a Stateside club for WWII fighter pilots to its freewheeling terror tactics of the early sixties, to its absurd flirtation with the hippie scene, to its current status as one of the most powerful underground organisations in North America, rivalling even the Mafia.

Book Synopsis Hell’s Islands by : Stanley Coleman Jersey
Download or read book Hell’s Islands written by Stanley Coleman Jersey and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-06 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From August 1942 until February 1943, two armies faced each other amid the malarial jungles and blistering heat of Guadalcanal Island. The Imperial Japanese forces needed to protect and maintain the air base that gave them the ability to interdict enemy supply routes. The Allies were desperate to halt the advance of a foe that so far had inflicted crippling losses on the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor, then seized the Philippines, Wake Island, the Dutch East Indies, Guam, and other Allied territory. After months of relentless battle, the U.S. troops forced back the determined Japanese, providing what many historians believe was the decisive turning point in the Pacific theater of operations. Stanley Coleman Jersey, a medical air evacuation specialist in the South Pacific during World War II, has spent countless hours combing Australian, Japanese, and U.S. documents and interviewing more than 200 veterans of the Guadalcanal campaign, both Allied and Japanese. Beginning with the events that preceded the battle for Guadalcanal during the Australian defense of the southern Solomon Islands in late 1941, Jersey details the military preparations made in response to intelligence describing the creation of an enemy air base within striking distance of American supply lines and recounts the civilian evacuation that followed the Japanese arrival in New Guinea. With the stage set, he turns to the campaign itself, with particular emphasis on the combat during the critical period of August to December 1942. While Guadalcanal is his primary focus, Jersey also covers the roles played by forces occupying the other Solomon Islands, including the plight of construction laborers, air crews, and ground units. This book, chock-full of gripping battlefield accounts and harrowing first-person narratives, draws together for the first time Allied and Japanese perspectives on the bloody contest. It is certain to become an indispensable asset to historians of World War II.
