Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of six, living in New York, she was the third of six children born to a woman who had allowed drugs and alcohol to rule her life. The child was placed for adoption by the Department of Children and Families. She was brought to Florida at the age of nine, with only a few memories of her life before foster care. Two and a half years later, the adoption failed and the little girl was deserted. Our fourth foster child came into our lives, not only suffering from the loss of her biological family, but the loss of her adoptive family as well. Those who had adopted her had destroyed her paperwork and no one seemed to have record of the child's last name at birth. She was tiny, emotionally fragile and absolutely beautiful. There was so much pain and anger that she rejected even the slightest touch of affection. This beautiful little girl, without a home, a family or even her own last name, stood before me, her future in my hands. So ill equipped to handle the needs of this little girl was I that sometimes I wondered what on earth I had been thinking. And then other days, I felt so much pride as she revealed the strength of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after her passing, Audrey Hepburn remains the most beloved of all Hollywood stars, known as much for her role as UNICEF ambassador as for films like Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Several biographies have chronicled her stardom, but none has covered her intense experiences through five years of Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. According to her son, Luca Dotti, "The war made my mother who she was." Audrey Hepburn's war included participation in the Dutch Resistance, working as a doctor's assistant during the "Bridge Too Far" battle of Arnhem, the brutal execution of her uncle, and the ordeal of the Hunger Winter of 1944. She also had to contend with the fact that her father was a Nazi agent and her mother was pro-Nazi for the first two years of the occupation. But the war years also brought triumphs as Audrey became Arnhem's most famous young ballerina. Audrey's own reminiscences, new interviews with people who knew her in the war, wartime diaries, and research in classified Dutch archives shed light on the riveting, untold story of Audrey Hepburn under fire in World War II. Also included is a section of color and black-and-white photos. Many of these images are from Audrey's personal collection and are published here for the first time.

Book excerpt: Two childhood best friends wake up the morning after their twentieth high school reunion to discover that they’ve switched bodies in this hilarious and heartwarming debut by two childhood best friends. With “a delicious, page-turning premise, and sweet and surprising insights” (New York Times bestselling author Jen Lancaster), Your Perfect Life perfectly illustrates that old adage: Sometimes, you have to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes to see what’s in her heart. Best friends since childhood, Casey and Rachel couldn’t lead more different lives. While workaholic Casey rubs elbows with celebrities daily as the host of Gossip TV and comes home nightly to an empty apartment, stay-at-home mom Rachel juggles an “oops” baby, two fiery teenagers, and a husband who barely seems the man she fell in love with two decades before. After an argument at their twentieth high school reunion, Casey and Rachel throw back shots to get the night back on track. Instead, they get a life-changing hangover. Waking up in each other’s bodies the next morning, they must figure out how to navigate their altered realities. Rachel is forced to face the broadcasting dreams she gave up when she got pregnant in college, and Casey finally steps out of the spotlight to face the real reason why she’s alone. And they soon discover that they don’t know themselves—or their best friend—nearly as well as they thought they did. Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke bring their “witty, winning style” (Sarah Pekkanen, author of The Best of Us) to every page of this novel that is sure to please fans of In Her Shoes and The Opposite of Me. Your Perfect Life is a story of humor and heart about two best friends, what they didn’t know about each other, and how, by switching lives, each learns to appreciate her own.

Book excerpt: Audrey, Katy and Adam have been friends since high school—a decade of sneaky cigarettes, drunken misadventures on Melbourne backstreets, heart-to-hearts, in-jokes. But now Katy has gone. And without her, Audrey is thrown off balance: everything she thought she knew, everything she believed was true, is bent out of shape. Audrey’s family—her neurotic mother, her wayward teenage brother, her uptight suburban sister—are likely to fall apart. Her boyfriend, Nick, tries to hold their relationship together. And Audrey, caught in the middle, needs to find a reason to keep going when everything around her suddenly seems wrong. Evocative and exquisitely written, Our Magic Hour is a story of love, loss and discovery. Jennifer Down’s remarkable debut novel captures that moment when being young and invincible gives way to being open and vulnerable, when one terrible act changes a life forever. Jennifer Down is a writer and editor whose work has appeared in publications including the Age, Saturday Paper, Australian Book Review and Overland. She is one of Sydney Morning Herald’s Young Novelists of the Year, 2017. Our Magic Hour, her debut novel, was shortlisted for the 2014 Victorian Premier's Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript. She lives in Melbourne. ‘Down’s evocation of Audrey’s grief is astute, perceptive and always convincing...It’s compelling writing.’ Australian ‘Intimate, raw and occasionally heartbreaking...I loved this book. Our Magic Hour is beautiful, gut-wrenching fiction and I cannot recommend it highly enough.’ Readings ‘Down has perfectly captured the vulnerability of youth...An incredibly intimate and tender novel about friendship, family and the transformative power of grief...It is easily one of the best Australian debuts I’ve read in a long time.’ Lip Mag 'Down’s novel is a story about very small things, that all add up to very big things about grief and friendship, love and death...Down has an impressive feel for the drama of the ordinary.’ Age/Sydney Morning Herald ‘Down has a reserved but beautiful prose...In its maturity and elegance, Our Magic Hour is a surprising and captivating debut novel. I have no doubt that Down will produce more quality writing in the future.’ Farrago ‘Down’s preoccupations are those of a young adult grappling with heavy issues, and she does so admirably...Our Magic Hour takes place in a lively, vivid Melbourne cityscape.’ Otago Daily Times ‘Striking, breathlessly written...Down’s clear and confident voice can play originally with language...An eloquent debut.’ WA Today ‘Down’s supple social realism has a vitality and energy to it...I’m sure that Down will be a fixture in the Australian lit scene for years to come.’ Lifted Brow ‘An impressive and emotionally sophisticated novel.’ Australian Book Review ‘Its depictions of the characters’ close friendships, and the personalised map of Melbourne it draws were so vivid and so true that I found myself almost longing for the same, despite the sadness at the heart of the book.’ Readings, Our Favourite Books of 2016 (so far) ‘Subtle and vividly observed, Our Magic Hour is a chronicle of early adulthood, with all its violent unions and passionate friendships...Down’s work [is] universally important.’ Overland ‘Down’s depiction of modern Melbourne is so familiar and evocative that I felt like I’d bumped into her characters at the cafe just the day before. For a book so infused with grief and longing, the sheer amount of love and depth of feeling in the novel made me yearn for everything and nothing all at once, and has stayed with me throughout the year.’ 2016 Staff Picks, Kill Your Darlings ‘If Helen Garner turned her razor-sharp eye to a new generation, Our Magic Hour might be the result. Down unravels the self-obsession and shortsightedness of youth with insight and affection, and turns the grit of modern twenty-something life—breakups, breakdowns, new jobs and new towns—into something profound, beautiful and hopeful.’ Junkee ‘Down writes equally of significant moments and unremarkable days with sparing beauty. Particularly adept at depiction of place, Down made me wonder if I hadn’t sat across from Audrey on the train to Redfern, bumped elbows with her at a bar in Bondi. Down is the kind of writer that you’ll be lucky to get on at the ground floor with, she is only going up.’ Concrete Playground ‘A raw novel about growing up in a world that never seems to make any sense...this novel manages to neatly capture that universal malaise felt by terrified millennials all over the world.’ Vice ‘A masterclass in elegant understatement...A very fine novel indeed—compassionate, clear-sighted and lovely.’ A Life in Books ‘Down’s prose is sharp and intimate, the characters flawed and achingly familiar. For a book about mourning, it’s not overly sentimental or indulgent. Instead, the characters’ grief is ugly and bewildering. Our Magic Hour is a compelling, authentic portrayal of loss, dislocation and the unsteadiness of young adult life.’ Good Reading

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frightened by the fighting in their families, two teenage lovers realize in Homeless in High School that theyre treated better by each others parents. Hoping for improvement, Marshall and Melissa switch their houses but discover further quarrels and disintegrating marriages. Backed into a corner, they mature in a hurry when they turn into the grown-ups raising their adopted parents. Hard-headed and precocious but believable, they become the models of maturity that they cant find at home, in many famous adolescent novels, and in cultural struggles over teenage abstinence or promiscuity. Theyre befriended by a wise, irreverent English teacher, who admires in them what he has never witnessed in the so-called classics that hes taught for decades. Writing their own Declaration of Independence, they confront demoralizing marriages and restore their families. They become relentless, laying down conditions for returning home, including mandatory counseling and an end to terrifying quarrels. Showing empathy and ingenuity, they offer an example of maturity not only for their foster parents but also for teenagers. Homeless in High School is a cross between a novel and a screen play. It has the readability of a well-written novel but the energy of a first-rate film in 80 swiftly moving scenes. The reader will be hooked immediately as Marshall and Melissa switch their homes and find their foster parents totally bewildered to discover that theyve been adopted by each others children!

Book excerpt: This book explores the significant contributions of African American women radical activists from 1955 to 1995. It examines the 1961 case of African American working-class self-defense advocate Mae Mallory, who traveled from New York to Monroe, North Carolina, to provide support and weapons to the Negroes with Guns Movement. Accused of kidnapping a Ku Klux Klan couple, she spent thirteen months in a Cleveland jail, facing extradition. African American women radical activists Ethel Azalea Johnson of Negroes with Guns, Audrey Proctor Seniors of the banned New Orleans NAACP, the Trotskyist Workers World Party, Ruthie Stone, and Clarence Henry Seniors of Workers World founded the Monroe Defense Committee to support Mallory. Mae’s daughter, Pat, aged sixteen also participated, and they all bonded as family. When the case ended, they joined the Tanzanian, Grenadian, and Nicaraguan World Revolutions. Using her unique vantage point as Audrey Proctor Seniors’s daughter, Paula Marie Seniors blends personal accounts with theoretical frameworks of organic intellectual, community feminism, and several other theoretical frameworks in analyzing African American radical women’s activism in this era. Essential biographical and character narratives are combined with an analysis of the social and political movements of the era and their historical significance. Seniors examines the link between Mallory, Johnson, and Proctor Seniors’s radical activism and their connections to national and international leftist human rights movements and organizations. She asks the underlying question: Why did these women choose radical activism and align themselves with revolutionary governments, linking Black human rights to world revolutions? Seniors’s historical and personal account of the era aims to recover Black women radical activists’ place in history. Her innovative research and compelling storytelling broaden our knowledge of these activists and their political movements.
