Book excerpt: Excerpt from Height Growth and Site Index Curves for Red Alder In each stand, four to six dominant or codominant trees were selected that appeared free from evidence of past damage. These were felled and sectioned at -m intervals of height. The sections were labeled in the field with tree number and section height and then transported to the laboratory for immediate processing. Age of each section was determined by counting annual rings. When necessary, sections were sanded or recut to expose a fresh surface. For each tree, heights were plotted over ages, and trees with irregular growth patterns suggesting past damage or suppression were rejected. For the remaining 1 17 trees, the years required to reach breast height m) and the heights attained at ages 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, were read from the graphs and used in subsequent analyses. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applying Height Growth and Site Index Curves for Inland Douglas-Fir Site index was defined to be the average total height of the three best site trees (per one-half acre) at an index age of 50 years at breast height. Because the length of time it takes a seedling to reach breast height may be strongly influenced by factors that are poorly related to site quality - such as animal damage, snow damage, and plant competition in the immediate vicinity of the seed ling (cochran 1979; Curtis 1964) - index age was located at breast height rather than the base of the tree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method for Constructing Site Index Curves From Measurements of Tree Age and Height, Its Application to Inland Douglas-Fir For many years the most widely followed practice in describing forest site quality has been the use of a quantitative measuring system-site index curves. These must be developed for individual species and are supposed to represent the relationship between height and age of the average dominant and codomin'ant trees on the site. These curves can be derived from measurements that indicate height and age of selected trees at different periods in time, or from measurements of height and age at one point in time on a large number of trees that range in age from young to Old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Height Growth and Site Index Curves for Managed, Even-Aged Stands of Ponderosa Pine in the Pacific Northwest The most desirable density is the density at which trees continue growing at the pre determined goal rate. As the 'stand grows older, relatively low density will be maintained by periodic thinnings to some basal area level or tree number average diameter combination. Height of the dominant or tallest portion of the stand is the one measure of growth found most independent of stand factors and, consequently, the most reliable for site evaluation (lynch Generally speaking, we can conclude from the litera ture that height is not materi ally affected in stands that are not extremely overstocked or understocked (spurr In the Pacific Northwest, however, Weaver Baker Mowat Lynch (1958) and Barrett (1973) have shown that dense stocking of ponderosa pine does reduce height growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Height-Age and Site Index Curves for Pacific Silver Fir in the Pacific Northwest Equations were developed to estimate the number of years free-growing trees need to reach breast height for the range of site index values. Conversion equations are provided to estimate height at age 50 for curves representing index heights at age 100. The results give forest managers working tools for use in managing silver fir.
