Dabei wird auf verschiedene Aspekte ihrer Theorie eingegangen um eine begriffliche Grundlage zu schaffen. Neben einer Darstellung der theoretischen Vordenker wird vor allem auf das Konzept der Hegemonie als Diskurstheorie und Einheit der Differenz eingegangen. Zentrale Begriffe ihrer Theorie wie Äquivalenz und Antagonismus stehen hierbei im Fokus. Der Antagonismus nimmt für die Autoren eine paradoxe Rolle ein, da er sowohl diskursblockierende als auch konstituierende Instanz ist. Den Hauptteil dieser Arbeit wird die Rekonstruktion der Kritik Karin Priesters an den Ausführungen der beiden Autoren bilden. Zunächst sollen dabei die Kernpunkte ihrer Kritik herausgearbeitet werden (Mystik, Gramsci sowie Populismus und Demokratie), um dadurch zu prüfen inwiefern ihr Vorwurf des theoretischen um sich selbst „Kreisens“ berechtigt ist. An diese Kritik anlehnend werden Theorieansätze anderer Autoren, welche die Hegemonietheorie Laclaus und Mouffes ebenfalls einer kritischen Betrachtung unterziehen, dargestellt. Dazu wird zunächst der Verdacht Simon Critchleys untersucht, dass die Hegemonietheorie von Laclau und Mouffe ein normatives Defizit aufweise. Seine Kritik fußt auf der Annahme, dass die normative Basis der radikalen Demokratie, die radikale demokratische Ehtik, sich aus dekonstruktivistischem Vorgehen ergibt. Die Potentiale der dekonstruktivistischen Ethik und deren Verantwortung werden allerdings von Laclau und Mouffe seiner Ansicht nach nicht ausreichend ausgeschöpft. Weiterhin wird Slavoj Žižek ́s kritische Betrachtung zur Analyse herangezogen. Žižek geht in seinen Ausführungen besonders auf den Begriff der Universalität respektive den Begriffen Kontingenz und Hegemonie ein. Seine Kritik zielt darauf ab, dass Laclau zwar der Kontingenz politischer Kämpfe um Hegemonie Rechnung trage, die fundamentale Frage, wie das Terrain der kontingenten Kämpfe überhaupt zustande kommt, allerdings nicht mehr stellt. Eine abschließende Gegenüberstellung der Kritiken der drei Autoren an der politischen Theorie Laclaus und Mouffes soll schließlich dazu beitragen das kritische Porträt zu „vervollständigen“.

Sie überarbeiten und hüllen das sozialistische Projekt in die Form der radikalen Demokratie. In ihrer Überarbeitung und Radikalisierung von Gramscis Hegemonietheorie reagieren Laclau/Mouffe auf die Ausweitung sozialer Kämpfe, wie sie in den erwähnten Protestbewegungen zum Ausdruck kommen. Zentraler Gedanke ihrer radikalen und agonistischen Demokratietheorie ist dabei, dass sich politische Konflikte weder neutralisieren noch als Feinde betrachten lassen. Vielmehr lebt Demokratie von Konflikten um die Hegemonie im demokratischen Raum. Chantal Mouffes agonistisches Demokratieverständnis geht darüber hinaus von wechselseitigen Gegner aus, die um die Hegemonie im demokratischen Raum streiten, allerdings nicht als Feinde mit dem Ziel der gegenseitigen Vernichtung. Dieser radikaldemokratische Ansatz wird im Verlauf dieser Arbeit dargestellt und als Analyserahmen für das aktuelle rechtspopulistische Phänomen mit dem Namen "Pegida" verwendet.

In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific ‘German’ trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear. A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments.
