Book excerpt: The name of Hedley Verity, the master bowler of unyielding menace, is one to be cherished more than 50 years after his death. Allan Hill tells the story of a magnificent sporting obsession in this reissue of the first full-length biography of a revered cricketer. Verity headed the English first-class bowling averages in his first season with Yorkshire and twice took ten wickets in an innings in consecutive seasons. Overall, his mesmeric left-hand spin yielded 1,956 wickets, including 144 for England, in less than ten years. The book, winner of the Cricket Society's Jubilee Literary award in 1986, contains a foreword by Sir Donald Bradman (whom Verity twice dismissed at Lord's in June 1934 to mastermind England's only victory over Australia at cricket's 'headquarters' in a century). It also includes a revealing memoir of Verity's boyhood and an Australian tour journal (1932-33) kept by the Yorkshireman for his relatives and friends. The story ends with a graphic account of Verity's ultimate heroism during the Second World War and is followed by a full statistical analysis of his career.

Book excerpt: A truly unique and fascinating look at the changing nature of masculinity and manliness, told through the lens of a series of Yorkshire County Cricket Club player portraits through the ages. George Hirst was a man of his time. His apocryphal quotation "We'll get 'em in singles"epitomises his no-fuss approach to all matters, and his distate for excess or ostentation. His stiff upper lip was a requisite part of his Edwardian manliness. Fast forward a century or so to Darren Gough's besequinned victory on Strictly Come Dancing or to Michael Vaughan's final teary press conference, and the different versions of what it means to be masculine are worlds apart. It is one of the oldest cliches in sports writing to say that sport mirrors life. And yet, in this instance, the world of Yorkshire cricket has so faithfully mirrored the outside world that the cliche is unavoidable. Yorkshire, sobrest of counties, has given us some remarkable characters over the years - Len Hutton, Geoffrey Boycott, and Fred Trueman to name just a few. Through portraits of these and other Yorkshire players, and the values that they shared with their contemporaries, this wonderfully original book maps the contours of a sexual revolution whose tremors are still being felt today.

Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of depression-era politics, 1934 was an annus mirabilis for English sport. Within just a few days of each other, Hedley Verity, Henry Cotton and Fred Perry all triumphed in their field. To a sporting audience still groaning through the quagmire left by the Great Depression, greedy for inspiring distractions, these heroic events made for a heady spectacle. England's Ashes Test victory at Lord's (later known as Verity's match) saw Australia seeking revenge after the Bodyline series of 1932-33, but Verity bowled England to a famous innings victory, taking 15 wickets - 14 in one day! That same day, Cotton set out on the first qualifying round of the British Open. He went on to set a new Open record with a game so sparkling the Daily Express called it "the best round of golf ever played". And within a fortnight, Perry had beaten Australia's Jack Crawford in the Wimbledon final. England had an extraordinary national hatrick. Together, these three contests and these three singular life stories weave a vivid portrait of an England that has faded from view. Half-Time celebrates a time of intense and rapid social and cultural change, a time that was both the last hurrah of the ancien regime and the stirring of something new. And moving through it, famous actors on a grand stage, are three very English heroes.

It is also a very rare one: in nearly 60,000 first-class matches it has been achieved only 81 times. Surprisingly, although books have been written about Hedley Verity’s world record ten for 10 in 1932 and Jim Laker’s all-ten in the 1956 Old Trafford Test, nobody has ever written a book describing every all-ten. Until now. All Ten chronicles each all-ten, from Edmund Hinkly’s at Lord’s in 1848 to Zulfiqar Babar’s at Multan over a century and a half later. All-tens have been taken at many different venues, from famous Test match grounds to outgrounds on which first-class cricket is no longer played. Some were taken by great bowlers such as Colin Blythe and Clarrie Grimmett, some by less well-known ones including Harry Pickett of Essex and Tom Graveney’s brother Ken. Some bowlers were at the beginning of their careers, some were nearing the end. You will read about them all here and their very special feat, and maybe wonder why the bowlers at the other end didn’t strike even once, why many of the greatest bowlers of all-time never took an all-ten, and why all-tens have become much rarer in the last half century.

Book excerpt: David's father was a young man of seventeen when he joined the Merchant Navy in the early spring of 1939. He may well have been imagining a new life of excitement, and long voyages overseas to faraway places. Within six months of him beginning work as a 'bellboy' on the grand P & O luxury liner, Strathallan, Britain found itself at war with Germany once again. This story centres around his experiences of this long hard conflict. Along the way, memories of war operations in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and Indian Ocean are all recounted; and then of course, there was that Arctic convoy, PQ.17. He was very fortunate to serve on one of the few vessels to make it safely back home, the little rescue ship, Zamalek. Accounts of Zamalek's experiences on that Russian bound convoy (PQ.17), time spent stranded in Archangel, and the return passage (QP.14) are a central feature of the story, and so they should be.

Book excerpt: This fresh analysis of the England&–Australia "e;Bodyline Controversy"e; of 1932-33 uncovers hypocrisy on both sides of the furore, drawing on exclusive interviews with English "e;villain of the piece"e; (and Australian emigre) Harold Larwood. At the time, Australia was a young, isolated country where sport was a religion, winning essential, and the media prone to distortion. In England, the MCC was pressurised by a British government fearing trade repercussions, leaving Harold Larwood and Douglas Jardine to be hung out to dry on a clothes-line of political expediency. The Bodyline Hypocrisy analyzes the influence of Australian culture on events, and on exaggerations and distortions previously accepted as fact. It reveals that the MCC granted Honorary Membership to Larwood in 1949, influenced by its Australian president. And now even Ian Chappell has stated that Jardine's leg-theory tactic was simply playing Test cricket with whatever weapons were available. Times change and the truth emerges.

His description of the vendettas and jealousies among Bradman's peers are fascinating reflections on the players and the game. Bringing us closer to home is a profile of what The Don describes as his "greatest partnership", his sixty-five-year marriage to Jessie Bradman. The is a fascinating story of the cricket legends in Bradman's Band.

Book excerpt: As famous for its complicated rules as it is for its contentious (and lengthy) matches, cricket is the quintessentially English sport. Or is it? From cricket in literature to sticky wickets, Cricketing Lives is a paean to the quirky characters and global phenomenon that are cricket. Cricket is defined by the characters who have played it, watched it, reported it, ruled upon it, ruined it, and rejoiced in it. Humorous and deeply affectionate, Cricketing Lives tells the story of the world’s greatest and most incomprehensible game through those who have shaped it, from the rustic contests of eighteenth-century England to the spectacle of the Indian Premier League. It’s about W. G. Grace and his eye to his wallet; the invincible Viv Richards; and Sarah Taylor, “the best wicketkeeper in the world.” Richard H. Thomas steers a course through the despair of war, tactical controversies, and internecine politics, to reveal how cricket has always warmed our hearts as nothing else can.

Book excerpt: As its title suggests this is not just a list of names and dates but a serious research into the people behind the names on the various WW2 memorials in Bridlington including all the old boys of Bridlington School who died in WW2. The book begins with a detailed look at where the memorials are, when they were made and the names that appear on them. This is followed by the roll of honour itself, an alphabetical listing which gives a full page to each person named on the memorials. The Authors have used 'typical' family history resources in order to give as much biographical detail as possible, who they were, their parents, husbands / wives and children, where and how they died and what they did before enlistment. Some died in well-known land battles, some went down with their ships, while others were in aircraft that failed to return home. Not all were in the armed forces and these met their deaths through bombing raids and accidents of war. This is their story.

Book excerpt: In 1932, England’s cricket team, led by the haughty Douglas Jardine, had the fastest bowler in the world: Harold Larwood. Australia boasted the most prolific batsman the game had ever seen: the young Don Bradman. He had to be stopped. The leg-side bouncer onslaught inflicted by Larwood and Bill Voce, with a ring of fieldsmen waiting for catches, caused an outrage that reverberated to the back of the stands and into the highest levels of government. Bodyline, as this infamous technique came to be known, was repugnant to the majority of cricket-lovers. It was also potentially lethal – one bowl fracturing the skull of Australian wicketkeeper Bert Oldfield – and the technique was outlawed in 1934. After the death of Don Bradman in 2001, one of the most controversial events in cricketing history – the Bodyline technique - finally slid out of living memory. Over seventy years on, the 1932-33 Ashes series remains the most notorious in the history of Test cricket between Australia and England. David Frith’s gripping narrative has been acclaimed as the definitive book on the whole saga: superbly researched and replete with anecdotes, Bodyline Autopsy is a masterly anatomy of one of the most remarkable sporting scandals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the civilised world fought for its very survival, Sir Home Gordon, writing in The Cricketer in September 1939, stated that ‘England has now started the grim Test Match with Germany’, the objective of which was to ‘win the Ashes of civilisation’. Despite the interruption of first-class and Test cricket in England, the game continued to be played and watched by hundreds of thousands of people engaged in military and civilian service. In workplaces, cricket clubs, and military establishments, as well as on the famous grounds of the country, players of all abilities kept the sporting flag flying to sustain morale. Matches raised vast sums for war charities whilst in the north and midlands, competitive League cricket continued, with many Test and county players being employed as weekend professionals by the clubs. Further afield the game continued in all the Test-playing nations and in further-flung outposts around the world. Troops stationed in Europe, Africa and the Far East seized on any opportunity to play cricket, often in the most unusual of circumstances. Luxurious sporting clubs in Egypt hosted matches that pitted English service teams against their Commonwealth counterparts. Luminaries such as Wally Hammond and Lindsay Hassett were cheered on by their uniformed countrymen. Inevitably there was a sombre side to cricket’s wartime account. From renowned Test stars such as Hedley Verity to the keen but modest club player, many cricketers paid the ultimate price for Allied victory. The Victory Tests of 1945 were played against a backdrop of relief and sorrow. Nevertheless, cricket would emerge intact into the post-war world in broadly the same format as 1939. The game had sustained its soul and played its part in the sad but necessary victory of the Grim Test.

Book excerpt: In the years immediately after World War 2, tens of thousands of men and women broke the law each day by betting with illegal street bookmakers. Walk The Walk is a story about growing up amongst the gambling fraternity in the fishing community of Hull, where getting an edge over the bookies, by fair means or foul, was the main preoccupation for many. Walking races, and the often frenzied betting that accompanied them, were at their height in the early 1930's but the author has transposed the event to the era he knows best - the 1950's - and brought together in this fictional account a host of characters. Most of those taking part have backed themselves for that one big win and bookie Hedley Doyle faces ruin if the wrong winner emerges, which is why he's hatched a 'get out of jail' plan. Will it be 'The Bounder', a hard-bitten trawlerman, who emerges the winner? Or Dennis Batte, who thinks he's invincible and desperately needs to succeed? Or will it be Jo Jones, the buxom barmaid with the colourful past?

Book excerpt: There has been an explosion in the quantity of sports history literature published in recent years, making it increasingly difficult to keep abreast of developments. The annual number of publications has increased from around 250 to 1,000 a year over the last decade. This is due in part to the fact that during the late 1980s and 90s, many clubs, leagues and governing bodies of sport have celebrated their centenaries and produced histories to mark this occasion and commemorate their achievements. It is also the result of the growing popularity and realisation of the importance of sport history research within academe. This international bibliography of books, articles, conference proceedings and essays in the English language is a one-stop for the sports historian to know what is new.
