Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Melodies It gave them virtues not their own; No ear so dull, no soul so cold, That felt not, fired not to'the tone, Till David's Lyre grew mightier than his throne! It told the triumphs; of our King, It wafted glory to our God 'it made our gladdened vallies ring, The cedars bow, the mountains nod; Its sound aspired to Heaven and there Since then, though heard 'on earth no more, Devotion and her daughter Love Still bid the bursting spirit soar To sounds that seem'asfrom above. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Hymnal for School and Home The purpose of the Hebrew Hymnal is to present traditional melodies of the synagogue and the Jewish home adapted to the needs of young Israel. Most of the music has been specially arranged for the Hymnal, and some of the selections are here published for the first time. In every case, the editors have endeavored to give a simple version of the melody with correct harmonization. The transliteration of the Hebrew words aecom panying the music is a slight modification of the system followed in the Jewish Encyclopedia. The Hebrew text (based on S. Baer's Abodath Israel) as well as the English translation, which follows the authorized Singer Prayer Book, are printed on the page Opposite the music, except where space permitted the printing of the words on the same page with the music. This arrangement makes it possible to use the book as a Hebrew reader in the schools. Inasmuch, however, as the mison d' fire of the book is the music. It was, of course, necessary to page it trom left to right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Zion by Hebrew Singers of Mediaeval Times The originals of the following poems are, with one or two exceptions, to be found in the Sabbath and festival prayer-books in use in the synagogues of English and foreign Jewish communities. By far the larger number come to us from mediaeval Spain, where Hebrew poetry reached the highest point of devotional and poetical excellence. There the Jewish hymnologists were alike poets and philosophers, and the stream of learning and cultivation, mingling with that of poetry, flowed through the plains of religious life and enriched them in a thousand ways, while the fruit of the tree of knowledge was used both to enlighten and strengthen religious faith, and to adorn and beautify divine service. He was the creator of a new form of sutz'zzz, and was fol lowed by an imitative school of Paz'tam'm. His style is condensed, obscure, and full of allusions to Hagadic pas sages. Oi this allusive style, the first line of the seventh stanza in the following poem (15m ll? Nd) may be taken as an example. Tradition makes Jacob linger for four teen years, on his way to Mesopotamia, in the houses of study of Shem and Eber. Other legends are told of Jacob's love of learning - Kalir's compositions number over two hundred. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
