Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Life and Times Most histories have been histories of kings and em perors. The daily life of the common people - their joys and sorrows, their hopes, achievements, and ideals - has been buried in oblivion. The historical narratives of the Bible are, indeed, to a' great extent an exception to this rule. They tell us much about the everyday life of peasants and slaves. The Bible's Chief heroes were not kings nor nobles. Its supreme Hero was a peasant workingman. But we have not always studied the Bible from this point Of view. In this course we shall try to reconstruct for ourselves the story of the Hebrew people as an account of Hebrew Shepherds, farmers, and such like: what oppressions they endured; how they were de livered; and above all what ideals of righteousness and truth and mercy they cherished, and how they came to think and feel about God. It makes little difierence to us what particular idler at any particular time sat in the palace at Jerusalem sending forth tax-collectors to raise funds for his luxuries. It is of very great interest and concern to us if there were daughters like Ruth in the barley fields of Bethlehem, if shepherds tended their flocks in that same country who were so fine in heart and simple in faith that to them or their children visions of angels might appear telling Of a Saviour of the world. On such as these, in this study, let us as far as possible fix our attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Life, of the Hebrews The designation of the period of Hebrew life which is considered in this part Of the present work is not as easy as it at first thought seems, for the term here employed, the usual one, is misleading, though per haps not as misleading to many as some other might be. The time covered is from the settlement of Canaan to the monarchy. This was a period when the Hebrews for the most part were wanting in unity, when the clans grouped themselves in certain parts of Canaan, revealing in some instances their kinship, as in the case of the Leah and Rachel clans. If there had been something akin to national life prior to the settlement, during their nomadic wanderings, it must have grown very largely out of the circumstances of that life. When they entered Canaan, as there will be an endeavour to Show later, they went up in groups to their various allotments or destinations and es tablished themselves as best they could. Later, on rare occasions, clan aided clan, and on occasions rarer still, group or tribe aided some clan in extremity. Not apparently until near the close Of this period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Hebrew Stories and Their Modern Interpretation The purpose Oi this book is to examine some of the varied and interesting narratives of the Old Testament in the light of modern study, with a view to discovering their original significance and showing their relations to other parts of this great literature. It is quite natural in the atmosphere of our time that the most prominent and attractive feature should be the utterances of the great prophets, the oracles of the men who did so much to lift religion to a higher moral plane and make it a spiritual rather than a magical power. It is said that prophecy is the heart of the Old Testament, and that statement is true enough, if we remember that the heart, though a central and vital Organ, is related to all other parts of the body it receives the life-blood and sends it forth again in purer, stronger forms. We will find prophetic ideas in earlier stories just as we can trace the influence Of prophecy in later history and law. We are concerned with a movement which, when it once began, was continuous and all its parts were woven into a living whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leopold Zunz: His Life and Times One of the outstanding Jewish literary develop ments of the nineteenth century is closely connected with the-name of Yom Tob Lippmann Zunz more familiarly known as Leopold Zunz. This was the employment of a new method in Jewish scholarship. Hitherto Jewish scholarship had been almost entirely one - sided. The study of the Talmud, for instance, was with few exceptions limited to the knowledge of its contents to the complete neglect of its sociological background and historical growth. The age of Enlightenment introduced by Mendelssohn in the 18th century did not bring any real improvement in this respect as the Haskalah movement had an entirely different aim, to make the Jews acquaint with general culture. Lack of comprehension of the historical development of the Jewish people and its literature remained therefore as stron ly marked as before. The method introduced by tuuz, however, completely revolutionized Jewish learning, to such an extent as to make it possible to speak of Modern Jewish Scholarship. A record of the life and work of such a man cannot fail to be of interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism as Creed and Life Thus much in reply to the possible charge that I have given a mere anthology, - that I have provided a collection of elegant extracts at the cost of ignoring the less attrac tive teachings. I have certainly made many quotations, especially in the section on Ethics. But I have done so intentionally. My aim has been to give some idea of the nobility of thought which characterises the Jewish doctrine of post-biblical times. The passages I have cited are but specimens of the vast moral and spiritual wealth to be found in the Talmudic and medieval literatures. Verse written up to the tenth century show the development of piyut, or liturgical poetry, and retell episodes from the Bible and exalt the glory of God. Medieval works introduce secular ideas in love poems, wine songs and rhymed narratives, as well as devotional verse for specific religious rituals. Themes such as the longing for the homeland run through the ages, especially in verse written after the rise of the Zionist movement, while poems of the last century marry Biblical references with the horrors of the Holocaust. Together these works create a moving portrait of a rich and varied culture through the last 3,000 years.
