Book excerpt: The IAEA organizes international collaborative standard problems (ICSP) to facilitate the development and validation of computer codes for design and safety analysis of nuclear power plants, which usually includes an experimental investigation of important phenomena and simulation of the experiment with computer codes. This ICSP investigated phenomena that determine the thermo-mechanical behaviour of heavy water reactor fuel channels during a fuel overheating scenario. The publication summarizes the experiment, the complex and transient nature of phenomena interactions that ultimately determine fuel channel behaviour, the simulation methods and results, and the lessons learned from the ICSP. It provides a comparison of the results obtained from eight participating organizations from five countries, utilizing different methods and computer codes. General conclusions drawn and recommendations made for future developments are also included.

Book excerpt: Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors: CANDU, the seventh volume in the JSME Series on Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation series, provides a comprehensive and complete review of a single type of reactor in a very accessible and practical way. The book presents the full lifecycle, from design and manufacturing to operation and maintenance, also covering fitness-for-service and long-term operation. It does not relate to any specific vendor-based technology, but rather provides a broad overview of the latest technologies from a variety of active locations which will be of great value to countries invested in developing their own nuclear programs. Including contemporary capabilities and challenges of nuclear technology, the book offers practical solutions to common problems faced, along with the safe and approved processes to reach suitable solutions. Professionals involved in nuclear power plant lifecycle assessment and researchers interested in the development and improvement of nuclear energy technologies will gain a deep understanding of PHWR nuclear reactor physics, chemistry and thermal-hydraulic properties. Provides a complete reference dedicated to the latest research on Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors and their economic and environmental benefits Goes beyond CANDU reactors to analyze the popular German and Indian designs, as well as plant design in Korea, Romania, China and Argentina Spans all phases of the nuclear power plant lifecycle, from design, manufacturing, operation, maintenance and long-term operation

Book Synopsis Design of the Reactor Coolant System and Associated Systems for Nuclear Power Plants by : IAEA
Download or read book Design of the Reactor Coolant System and Associated Systems for Nuclear Power Plants written by IAEA and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations on how to meet the requirements established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-2/1 (Rev. 1) in relation to the reactor coolant system and associated systems for nuclear power plants. It is a revision of IAEA Safety Standards Series No. NS-G-1.9, which it supersedes. The publication takes into account developments, experience and practices in the design of nuclear power plants throughout their lifetime. It references and considers other IAEA safety standards that are relevant and related to the design of the reactor coolant system and associated systems for nuclear power plants. Recommendations to achieve the required reliability of the capabilities designed to transfer residual heat to the ultimate heat sink in the different plant states are also included. As those systems are dependent on specific reactor technologies, more appropriate recommendations have been developed respectively for pressurized light water reactors, boiling water reactors and pressurized heavy water reactors.
Book Synopsis Infrastructure and Methodologies for the Justification of Nuclear Power Programmes by : Agustin Alonso
Download or read book Infrastructure and Methodologies for the Justification of Nuclear Power Programmes written by Agustin Alonso and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential development of any nuclear power programme should include a rigorous justification process reviewing the substantial regulatory, economic and technical information necessary for implementation, given the long term commitments involved in any new nuclear power project. Infrastructure and methodologies for the justification of nuclear power programmes reviews the fundamental issues and approaches to nuclear power justification in countries considering nuclear new build or redevelopment.Part one covers the infrastructure requirements for any new nuclear power programme, with chapters detailing the role and responsibilities of government, regulatory bodies and nuclear operator and the need for human resources and technical capability at the national level. Part two focuses on issues relevant to the justification process, including nuclear safety, radiation protection and emergency planning. Current designs and advanced reactors and radioactive waste management are also considered, along with the economic, social and environmental impacts of nuclear power development. Part three reviews the development of nuclear power programme, from nuclear power plant site selection and licensing, through construction and operation, and on to decommissioning. Finally, a series of valuable appendices detail the UK experience of justification, nuclear safety culture and training, and the multinational design evaluation programme (MDEP).With its distinguished editor and expert team of contributors, Infrastructure and methodologies for the justification of nuclear power programmes is an essential reference for international and national stakeholders in this field, particularly governmental, non-governmental and regulatory bodies, nuclear power operators and consultants. Offers a comprehensive analysis of the infrastructure and methodologies required to justify the creation of nuclear power programmes in any country Provides coverage of the main issues and potential benefit linked to nuclear power Reviews the implementation of a nuclear power programme with particular reference to the requirements and methods involved in construction
