Book excerpt: This report reviews existing and newly developed analytical methods for sewage sludge analysis. ft had been stressed earlier that knowledge of the form of metals in waste and environmental samples is of great importance. As a result of this the development of simple equipment and analytical methods to initiate metal speciation has been stressed. Procedures developed earlier and used provisionally have been studied in depth. The mercury method is now acceptable as recorded. The As/Se procedure has been modified as a result of further investigation. Nonflame atomic absorption methods have been developed for silver and vanadium. It is demonstrated that using atomic absorption spectroscopy as a detector does not guarantee a quick solution to metal speciation problems. Sludges can be dry-ashed at 450°C without fear of Joss of cadmium, lead or appreciable amounts of zinc. When aluminum is to be determined, dry-ashing should not be used. Data also make it clear that incineration at temperatures usually employed will release large amounts of arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and zinc. A number of sewage sludges were analyzed, and the results are tabulated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disposal of sewage treatment plant sludges poses a serious problem. Potentially, these materials could be used as fertilizers on agricultural lands. This would be a double benefit acting as a disposal mechanism as well as a source of plant nutrients. On the other hand, a variety of reports have appeared urging caution in this regard for fear of contamination of the land by other matrix constituents. Among these are the potentially toxic heavy metals. A series of reports, most of which have appeared in the past year, describe the metal content of domestic sewage plant sludges and sewage sludge fertilizers. Researchers study the uptake by plants of heavy metals from sludged or otherwise metal contaminated soils. The present study emphasizes the utilization of standard and control samples as tools for validating the data obtained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a description of the various sources and factors influencing the contents of heavy metal pollution in post-catastrophic and agricultural soils, subsequent chapters examine soil enzymes and eggs as bio-monitors, lead adsorption, the effects of arsenic on microbial diversity, and the effects of Mediterranean grasslands on abandoned mines. A third section focuses on the adaptation strategies used by plants and bacteria, such as Pinus sylvestris in industrial areas, and the rhizosphere in contaminated tropical soils and soil treated with sewage sludge. Further topics addressed include strategies of bioremediation, e.g. using transgenic plants as tools for soil remediation. This new volume on heavy metals in soil will be of interest to researchers and scholars in microbial and plant biotechnology, agriculture, the environmental sciences and soil ecology.

Book excerpt: This book reviews the practice of reclaiming treated municipal wastewater for agricultural irrigation and using sewage sludge as a soil amendment and fertilizer in the United States. It describes and evaluates treatment technologies and practices; effects on soils, crop production, and ground water; public health concerns from pathogens and toxic chemicals; existing regulations and guidelines; and some of the economic, liability, and institutional issues. The recommendations and findings are aimed at authorities at the federal, state, and local levels, public utilities, and the food processing industry.

Book excerpt: Sewage sludge as an uncalled for product of wastewater treatment poses the challenge to society of disposing of it. Application of sewage sludge to agricultural land may be beneficial because it can improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils which may enhance crop growth. While, sewage sludge contains various heavy metals and it contains a wide variety of pathogens and can be infectious for different species of animals and plants as well as for humans. Consequently environmentally sound decisions need to be based on an integrative evaluation of contaminant sources and transfer pathways. It is a need of time that phytoremediation must be approached as a multidisciplinary research effort. Success will ultimately depend on the employment of a holistic approach to integrate the work of plant biologist, soil microbiologist, agronomists, and environmental engineers.

Book excerpt: This document presents key messages and the state-of-the-art of soil pollution, its implications on food safety and human health. It aims to set the basis for further discussion during the forthcoming Global Symposium on Soil Pollution (GSOP18), to be held at FAO HQ from May 2nd to 4th 2018. The publication has been reviewed by the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soil (ITPS) and contributing authors. It addresses scientific evidences on soil pollution and highlights the need to assess the extent of soil pollution globally in order to achieve food safety and sustainable development. This is linked to FAO’s strategic objectives, especially SO1, SO2, SO4 and SO5 because of the crucial role of soils to ensure effective nutrient cycling to produce nutritious and safe food, reduce atmospheric CO2 and N2O concentrations and thus mitigate climate change, develop sustainable soil management practices that enhance agricultural resilience to extreme climate events by reducing soil degradation processes. This document will be a reference material for those interested in learning more about sources and effects of soil pollution.

Book excerpt: The books provides a timely analysis in support of a paradigm shift in the field of wastewater management, from ‘treatment for disposal’ to ‘treatment for reuse’ by offering a variety of value propositions for water, nutrient and energy recovery which can support cost savings, cost recovery, and profits, in a sector that traditionally relies on public funding. The book provides new insights into the economics of wastewater use, applicable to developed and developing countries striving to transform wastewater from an unpleasant liability to a valuable asset and recasting urbanization from a daunting challenge into a resource recovery opportunity. “It requires business thinking to transform septage and sewage into valuable products. A must read for water scholars, policy makers, practitioners, and entrepreneurs". Guy Hutton, Senior Economist, Water and Sanitation Program, Water Global Practice, World Bank “This book provides compelling evidence and real solutions for the new ‘resource from waste’ approach that is transforming sanitation, boosting livelihoods, and strengthening urban resilience”. Christopher Scott, Professor and Distinguished Scholar, University of Arizona “This book shows how innovative business thinking and partnerships around resource recovery and reuse fit well within an inclusive green economy and climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies”. Akiça Bahri, Coordinator of the African Water Facility, Tunisia, and award-winning researcher
