This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awareness of the possible contamination of our rivers and lakes with heavy metals resulting from urban runoff is necessary. The need for baseline data on pollution studies resulting from urban runoff to water bodies (streams, lakes, rivers etc) is of profound importance. This study focuses on the urbanized part of the Gallinas watershed of Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico - USA, which covers approximately 52,500 acres to the west of Las Vegas and is developed primarily with residential and light commercial areas. Significant amounts of urban runoff enter the Gallinas River from different drainages and areas during wet weather flow without pre-treatment. The primary objective of this study was to identify the various heavy metals and their concentrations associated with aqueous and suspended solid phases during wet weather flow before discharge into the Gallinas River.

Book Synopsis Metal Pollution in the Aquatic Environment by : U. Förstner
Download or read book Metal Pollution in the Aquatic Environment written by U. Förstner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic chemistry is becoming both a rewarding and substantial area of inquiry and is drawing many prominent scientists to its fold. Its literature has changed from a compilation of compositional tables to studies of the chemical reactions occurring within the aquatic environments. But more than this is the recognition that human society in part is determining the nature of aquatic systems. Since rivers deliver to the world ocean most of its dissolved and particulate components, the interactions of these two sets of waters determine the vitality of our coastal waters. This significant vol ume provides not only an introduction to the dynamics of aquatic chem istries but also identifies those materials that jeopardize the resources of both the marine and fluvial domains. Its very title provides its emphasis but clearly not its breadth in considering natural processes. The book will be of great value to those environmental scientists who are dedicated to keeping the resources of the hydrosphere renewable. As the size of the world population becomes larger in the near future and as the uses of materials and energy show parallel increases, the rivers and oceans must be considered as a resource to accept some of the wastes of society. The ability of these waters and the sediments below them to accommodate wastes must be assessed continually. The key questions relate to the capacities of aqueous systems to carry one or more pollutants.

Book Synopsis Transformation Processes of Metals in Urban Road Dust by : Ayomi Jayarathne
Download or read book Transformation Processes of Metals in Urban Road Dust written by Ayomi Jayarathne and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-07 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physicochemical changes (transformations) that metals deposited on urban road surfaces undergo during dry weather periods, in order to provide insights into their potential impacts on stormwater quality. Based on extensive field experiments, and laboratory and data analyses, it examines transformation characteristics of metals with respect to the particle size of road dust, antecedent dry days and land uses. Further, it proposes a new risk-assessment methodology, improving the original human health-risk indices based on the transformation characteristics and potential bioavailability of metals in order to evaluate the risks posed by metals in stormwater. This book is of interest to researchers and decision-makers developing appropriate pollution mitigation measures to enhance the quality of stormwater, targeting the effective reuse of stormwater in urban areas.
