Book excerpt: Two threshold gas Cherenkov counters have been constructed for the electron and hadron High Resolution Spectrometers (HRS) of the Jefferson Lab Experimental Hall A. These counters are intended to separate electrons/positrons from other particles up to 4 GeV/c. The counters are operated at atmospheric pressure with CO2. Each counter is equipped with ten mirrors. Lightweight, thin, spherical mirrors (5.5 + 10−3 radiation lengths) have been employed resulting in a total thickness of 1.4 + 10−2 radiation lengths crossed by the particles. A prototype of the counter has been tested at CERN with a mixed beam of positrons, pions, and protons from 1 to 4 GeV/c. Its detection efficiency for positrons and the rejection ratios for pions and protons have been measured as a function of the pulse height response (or equivalently the number of photoelectrons). An improvement of 34% in the number of photoelectrons has been obtained by using a wavelength shifter coated on the photocathode glass window. With such an improvement in 1 m long radiator, an inefficiency for positrons less than 10−3 and rejection ratios pi/e at the level of few 10−3 and p/e smaller than 10−3 have been obtained for pulse heights above 2 photoelectrons. Contaminations of particles below the Cherenkov threshold is fully understood considering delta-rays production.

Book excerpt: The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) is planning an upgrade of the existing electron beam energy from 6 GeV to 12 GeV. The program calls for the construction of a new experimental hall - Hall D - and a new Tagger hall in which the electron beam will be converted to a photon beam that interacts with a target at the center of the GlueX detector housed in Hall D. The detector is based on a solenoidal design with drift chambers and a lead-scintillator calorimeter inside the bore of the magnet and sets of time- of-flight scintillators and lead-glass crystals in the downstream direction outside of the magnet. The Forward Drift Chambers will measure the paths of charged particles travelling in the forward direction downstream of the target. Each chamber unit will consist of a wire plane flanked on either side by cathode planes divided into strips. The combination of wire and cathode readout allows for reconstruction of "space points" at several positions along.

Book excerpt: We describe a new aerogel threshold Cherenkov detector installed in the HMS spectrometer in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The Hall C experimental program in 2003 required an improved particle identification system for better identification of [pi]/K/p, which was achieved by installing an additional threshold Cherenkov counter. Two types of aerogel with n = 1.03 and n = 1.015 allow one to reach ≈10−3 proton and 10−2 kaon rejection in the 1-5 GeV/c momentum range with pion detection efficiency better than 99% (97%). The detector response shows no significant position dependence due to a diffuse light collection technique. The diffusion box was equipped with 16 Photonis XP4572 PMT's. The mean number of photoelectrons in saturation was ≈16 and ≈8, respectively. Moderate particle identification is feasible near threshold.

Book excerpt: The Jefferson Lab experiment E12-06-122 is an ongoing experiment that measures the contribution of quarks to neutron spin. An important part of this experiment is the Cherenkov detector, used to detect electrons scattered off a polarized 3He target. Cherenkov detectors make use of the phenomenon of Cherenkov light, produced when a particle moves faster than the speed of light in the medium through which it travels, to identify particles by velocity. The previous experiment used a Cherenkov detector that did not operate well in the high rate environment in which it operated. The purpose of this experiment is to design and test a prototype for a new Cherenkov detector that will work well in a high rate environment. This report gives an account of the design, setup, and early data analysis of this prototype detector.

The detector consists of a time projection chamber (TPC) with a sensitive volume of 19 x 20 x 6 cm3 followed by a parallel plate avalanche counter (sensitive volume 20 x 5 x 0.4 cm3) and a multiwire proportional chamber (MWPC) with 96 wires 2 mm apart. The gas used was an argon/methane/isobutane mixture (ratio 60/20/20) at atmospheric pressure. TMAE at 15 C served as the photosensitive component. The measurements were done with a calibrated VUV photon source. The following results were obtained: spatial resolution of the MWPC 1.2 mm, spatial resolution of the TPC 800 mm, attachment length (13.0 ± 1.6) cm and photon detection efficiency 4.2% corresponding to N0 = 25 cm-1.

The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.

Book excerpt: The principal goals of the study were to articulate the scientific rationale and objectives of the field and then to take a long-term strategic view of U.S. nuclear science in the global context for setting future directions for the field. Nuclear Physics: Exploring the Heart of Matter provides a long-term assessment of an outlook for nuclear physics. The first phase of the report articulates the scientific rationale and objectives of the field, while the second phase provides a global context for the field and its long-term priorities and proposes a framework for progress through 2020 and beyond. In the second phase of the study, also developing a framework for progress through 2020 and beyond, the committee carefully considered the balance between universities and government facilities in terms of research and workforce development and the role of international collaborations in leveraging future investments. Nuclear physics today is a diverse field, encompassing research that spans dimensions from a tiny fraction of the volume of the individual particles (neutrons and protons) in the atomic nucleus to the enormous scales of astrophysical objects in the cosmos. Nuclear Physics: Exploring the Heart of Matter explains the research objectives, which include the desire not only to better understand the nature of matter interacting at the nuclear level, but also to describe the state of the universe that existed at the big bang. This report explains how the universe can now be studied in the most advanced colliding-beam accelerators, where strong forces are the dominant interactions, as well as the nature of neutrinos.

It synthesises several techniques of and approaches to radiation detection, covering a wide range of applications and addressing a large audience of experts and students. Many of the talks are in fact reviews of particular topics often not covered in standard books and other conferences, for instance, the medical physics section. To present these medical physics talks is crucial, since a large fraction of the community in medical physics are from the particle physics community. The same feature is true for astroparticle and space physics, which are relatively new fields. This book is unique in its scope. Except for IEEE, there is no other conference in the world that presents such a wide coverage of advanced technology applied to particle physics. However, unlike IEEE, more room is made in the book for reviews and general talks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen the development of the operational understanding of fun damental interactions within the standard model. This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field.
