Book excerpt: The re-evaluation of Heavy Duty Wood Preservatives (HDWPs) granted continued registration to creosote, pentachlorophenol, chromated copper arsenate and ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate subject to conditions that included the addition of new risk-reduction measures to product labels and additional data requirements. The Risk Management Plan is a plan to identify and implement opportunities to lower potential exposures and further reduce risk, above and beyond changes to product labels resulting from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency's HDWP re-evaluation.--Includes text from document.

Book excerpt: "This Re-evaluation Note invites stakeholders to propose risk management measures, and related comments, for consideration in the development of a heavy duty wood preservatives (HDWP) Risk Management Plan. These proposals should consist of measures that could potentially minimize risks to those working with HDWPs. This would be achieved by making all reasonable efforts to limit worker exposure levels to the lowest practical levels."--Document.

Book excerpt: This Proposed Re-evaluation (PRVD) summarizes the science evaluation for creosote, pentachlorophenol, chromated copper arsenate and ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate and presents the reasons for the proposed re-evaluation decision. It also proposes additional risk-reduction measures to further protect human health and the environment. The information is presented in two parts: i) the Overview describes the regulatory process and key points of the evaluation (i.e. the Science Evaluation summary); ii) while the full Science Evaluation provides detailed technical information on the human health, environmental and value assessments of creosote, pentachlorophenol, chromated copper arsenate and ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate. Though the PRVD is a consultation document, consultation has already taken place on the science evaluation and risk assessment component of these re-evaluations.--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the lessons learned from half a century of Caribbean cruise tourism; one of the most popular and profitable sectors of the tourism industry. The modern-day cruise industry dates from the 1960s when the three major cruise lines, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, set up shop in Florida and began selling winter cruises to the Caribbean targeting American retirees. For geopolitical reasons, the US initially excluded cruises to Cuba. This changed in 2016, following the historic Obama-Castro agreement to move towards diplomatic, trade and travel normalization. Cuba quickly became the Caribbean’s fastest growing cruise destination. This book considers the limited economic benefits of cruise tourism, its environmental and social impacts, and the effects of climate change, and "overtourism." Based on this analysis and case studies of key Caribbean and Mediterranean destinations, this book cautions against overdependence on cruise tourism and outlines reforms needed to bring more benefits and equity to Caribbean countries. It will be valuable to professionals, businesses, development agencies, NGOs, and academics interested in a sustainable cruise industry and the economic well-being of Caribbean island nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “ominous and persuasive” study of when violence starts in child development—and the preventive measures to stop it (The New York Times Book Review). This new, revised edition incorporates significant advances in neurobiological research and includes a new introduction by Dr. Vincent J. Felitti, a leading researcher in the field. When Ghosts from the Nursery: Tracing the Roots of Violence was first published, it was lauded for providing scientific evidence that violence can originate in the womb and become entrenched in a child’s brain by preschool. The authors’ groundbreaking conclusions became even more relevant following the wave of school shootings across the nation including the tragedies at Columbine High School, Sandy Hook Elementary School, and shocking subsequent shootings. Following each of these, media coverage and public debate turned yet again to the usual suspects concerning the causes of violence: widespread availability of guns and lack of mental health services for late-stage treatment. Discussion of the impact of trauma on human life—especially early in life during chemical and structural formation of the brain—is missing from the equation. Karr-Morse and Wiley continue to shift the conversation among parents and policy makers toward more fundamental preventative measures against violence. “Karr-Morse and Wiley boldly raise some tough issues . . . [They] start with a grim question—why are children violent?—and they forge a passionate and cogent argument for focusing our collective energies on infancy and parenthood to stop the cycle of ruined lives.” —The Seattle Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain and Portugal in the New World, 1492-1700 was first published in 1984. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Spanish and Portuguese expansion substantially altered the social, political, and economic contours of the modern world. In his book, Lyle McAlister provides a narrative and interpretive history of the exploration and settlement of the Americas by Spain and Portugal. McAlister divides this period (and the book) into three parts. First, he describes the formation of Old World societies with particular attention to those features that influenced the directions and forms of overseas expansion. Second, he traces the dynamic processes of conquest and colonization that between 1492 and about 1570 firmly established Spanish and Portuguese dominion in the New World. The third part deals with colonial growth and consolidation down to about 1700. McAlister's main themes are: the post-conquest territorial expansion that established the limits of what later came to be called Latin America, the emergence of distinctively Spanish and Portuguese American societies and economies, the formation of systems of imperial control and exploitation, and the ways in which conflicts between imperial and American interests were reconciled. This comprehensive history, with its extensive bibliographic essay and attention to historiographic issues, will be a standard reference for students and scholars of the period.
