Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy-duty wheeled vehicles (HDWVs) are all-wheel-drive vehicles that carry 25 tons or more and have three or more axles. They transport heavy, bulky cargo such as raw minerals, timber, construction materials, pre-fabricated modules, weapons, combat vehicles, and more. HDWVs are used in a variety of industries (mining, logging, construction, energy) and are critical to a country’s economy and defense. These vehicles have unique development requirements due to their high loads, huge dimensions, and specific operating conditions. Hauling efficiencies can be improved by increasing vehicle load capacity; however capacities are influenced by legislation, road limits, and design. Designing HDWVs differs from other multi-purpose all-wheel-drive vehicles. The chassis must be custom-designed to suit the customer’s particular purpose. The number of axles is another variable, as well as which ones are driving and which are driven. Tires are also customizable. Translated by SAE from Russian, this book narrates the history of HDWVs and presents the theory and calculations required to design them. It summarizes results of the authors’ academic research and experience and presents innovative technical solutions used for electric and hydrostatic transmissions, steering systems, and active safety of these vehicles. The book consists of three parts. Part one covers HDWV design history and general design methods, including basic vehicle design, and evaluating HDWV use conditions. Part one also covers general operation requirements and consumer needs, and a brief analysis of structural components of existing HDWVs and prototypes. Part two outlines information needs for designing HDWVs. Part three reviews basic theory and calculation of innovative technical solutions, as well as special requirements for component parts. This comprehensive title provides the following information about HDWVs: • History of design and manufacture. • Manufacturers’ summary design data. • Background data on sample vehicles. • Component calculation examples. • Overview of motion theory, which is useful in design and placement of bulky cargo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two primary failure mechanisms for flexible pavement include rutting or fatigue cracking. A major thoroughfare within Charlotte, NC was instrumented with traffic load and climatic instrumentation. Earth pressure cells (EPCs), asphalt strain (ASG), and soil compression gages (SCG) were placed in the newly constructed pavement sections along with temperature and moisture probes to monitor potential rutting and fatigue cracking damages from heavy axle vehicles, and also to collect response data that may be used in calibration of the new Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (M-EPDG) which uses regional data in determining the adequacy of newly designed pavements. EVERSTRESS 5.0 and ABAQUS FE were used to statically model the Charlotte city standard for arterial pavement sections and estimate failure distresses within the pavement. Control testing of the sensors with maintenance vehicles, a transit bus, and a crane revealed that the EPCs provided reliable results; however, the ASG and SCGs were recording at noise level. After post analysis, it was determined that the sensors were not being powered adequately and the terminal box was not electrically grounded. Remedial efforts have shown that using a separate power supply provides enough power to the sensors to function properly. Finite element modeling within ABAQUS provided close estimates of in field testing; however, the model should incorporate the visco-elastic properties of the HMA layer material and dynamic loading to accurately model the pavement sections. The control test should be repeated with a separate power supply and a new data acquisition system.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to analyze factors influencing the adoption of heavy axle loading (HAL) on short-line railroads in Canada. The research comprises a series of case studies which characterize selected Canadian short-line railroads. The approach stratifies the industry in terms of the type of ownership and geographic region. It also documents factors influencing the adoption of HAL for each railroad by examining the commodities it hauls (internal motivation) and its network connections to the Class 1 system (external motivation). Where available, infrastructure condition data are also reported. These studies revealed that all of the 31 railroads studied exhibited a medium-high or high overall motivation to adopt HAL. This reflects the nature of the short-line industry in Canada-filling a niche by hauling primarily heavy commodities (thereby providing internal motivation) while relying on Class 1 partners to offer complete services to their customers (thereby providing external motivation).

Book excerpt: In the fall of 1985, a field study to determine the effects of heavy truck axle load dynamics on the magnitude of pavement surface deflections was conducted at an instrumented pavement test site in the province of quebec. the test program involved placing perturbations on the road surface to vertically excite axles of an instrumented vehicle and recording axle forces and pavement surface deflections as the vehicle passed over deflection transducers. primary observations include the following: for high frequency (single perturbation) loading condition, 1) the magnitude of pavement surface deflections increased with increased vehicle velocity, 2) maximum dynamic axle loads ranged from approximately 130 to 200 percent of the static loads, 3) pavement deflection response was dependent on both the low frequency whole body and high frequency axle response, and 4) relative to normal test conditions, pavement deflections tended to increase linearly with increasing dynamic axle load; for whole body (multiple perturbations) loading condition, 1) maximum deflections caused by the oscillating tandem axles were about twice the magnitude of deflections produced by the same axle group under normal conditions, and 2) using the recorded deflections, estimated load equivalency factors for the bouncing tandem axles were 6.5 to 12.5 times the magnitude of the predicted equivalency factor for the same tandem axle on a relatively smooth pavement surface.
