Jimi has resided in the Reno/Sparks, Nevada, area for over forty-six years. She is the mother of two daughters and three grandsons. Jimi’s poetry writing started with letters to God. She never shared her poetry with others until Connie Davis-Myles, a friend, let her read “I know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. She was so inspired that she compiled a collection of her works and decided to publish her own book by the age of thirty. At age sixty-two, she has now self-published her sixth book. Jimi’s love affair with words and the color purple has made her one of Reno’s recognizable poets. She has recited in schools in Washoe County, the Veteran’s Hospital in Reno, the University of Nevada-Reno, as well as for private banquets and organizations. She has also taught poetry workshops. She writes about homelessness, love not found, loneliness, and love for her fellow human beings. She hopes to leave a legacy with her poetry. She donates a copy of her publications to local libraries; she wants everyone to be able to savor the message in her work. She writes on a regular basis. She feels it is an outlet for stress. Her way of giving back something to the world is devoting her life to the future, our young people. One of the highlights of her life was opening for Maya Angelou in 1994 at Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada, for a crowd of over thirty-two hundred people.

Book excerpt: For the exhausted, the hurting, and the faithful, The After Party helps reframe our political identity away from the "what" of political positions and toward the "how" being centered on Jesus. This paradigm-shifting book complements The After Party Project--a six-part, video-based, highly interactive curriculum that provides churches, small groups, and individuals with an on-the-ground, biblically based approach to a very complex topic. The After Party: Toward Better Christian Politics helps readers who feel despair about political divisiveness: Engage with others across political differences Learn specific steps to reframe political identity outside of partisan divides Focus on how we relate to one another as Jesus teaches before moving to the what of political topics The After Party is ideal for: Republicans, Democrats, and Independents looking for renewed hope and humility for our nation Local leaders seeking to counter animosity toward political opponents, susceptibility to lies, and other practices that threaten the common good Congregations, classes, and small groups watching The After Party video series Pastors who want to encourage their congregants to trade their partisan mindsets for the mind of Christ It's not too late. In today's political environment, faithfulness to a biblical how of political engagement shines as a radical challenge to both the Right and the Left. If you worry about what politics is doing to your community, your family, and your own well-being, The After Party will transform your political imagination. It's time for us to go beyond party politics and--as Christians--believe in the true "party" yet to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, Rick Telander intended to spend a few days doing a magazine piece on the court wizards of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant. He ended up staying the entire summer, becoming part of the players' lives and eventually the coach of a loose aggregation known as the Subway Stars. Telander tells of everything he saw: the on-court flash, the off-court jargon, the late-night graffiti raids, the tireless efforts of one promoter-hustler-benefactor to get these kids a chance at a college education. He lets the kids speak for themselves, revealing their grand dreams and ambitions. But he never flinches from showing us how far their dreams are from reality. The roots of today's inner-city basketball can be traced to the world Telander presents in "Heaven is a Playground," the first book of its kind. Rick Telander is a senior writer for "Sports Illustrated" and the winner of the 1987 Notre Dame Club Award for Excellence in Sports Journalism.

Book excerpt: Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence Finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award A Publishers Weekly Holiday Guide History Pick “A book so gripping it can scarcely be put down.... Superb.” —New York Times Book Review "WESTWARD HO! FOR OREGON AND CALIFORNIA!" In the eerily warm spring of 1846, George Donner placed this advertisement in a local newspaper as he and a restless caravan prepared for what they hoped would be the most rewarding journey of a lifetime. But in eagerly pursuing what would a century later become known as the "American dream," this optimistic-yet-motley crew of emigrants was met with a chilling nightmare; in the following months, their jingoistic excitement would be replaced by desperate cries for help that would fall silent in the deadly snow-covered mountains of the Sierra Nevada. We know these early pioneers as the Donner Party, a name that has elicited horror since the late 1840s. With The Best Land Under Heaven, Wallis has penned what critics agree is “destined to become the standard account” (Washington Post) of the notorious saga. Cutting through 160 years of myth-making, the “expert storyteller” (True West) compellingly recounts how the unlikely band of early pioneers met their fate. Interweaving information from hundreds of newly uncovered documents, Wallis illuminates how a combination of greed and recklessness led to one of America’s most calamitous and sensationalized catastrophes. The result is a “fascinating, horrifying, and inspiring” (Oklahoman) examination of the darkest side of Manifest Destiny.

Book excerpt: The events of these past few months can be likened to the destabilising of a mountain top, creating a political and social avalanche of awesome, overwhelming power. As it cascades, unstoppable, in its devastating surge, it now seems certain that everything in its path will be either swept along with it or buried irretrievably beneath. The public demand for radical change in law and order in the wake of a catalytic event on a tough East London estate featured in Catalyst, the first book in the 'Hotel St Kilda' Trilogy. Now with the second installment, Heaven’s Door, we rejoin the story as the new government, who swept to power off the back of the public’s appetite for reform, start to assert their control. The new measures for addressing street crime include lifetime banishment for worst offenders, a popular development which receives widespread support, and which Tom Brown, the Home Secretary, decides to extend to cover other serious crimes. Although he meets strong opposition to this change, he steadfastly pushes it through. Then, at the zenith of his political achievement, and just when he seems reconciled with his family, his decision backfires. His private and political lives collide dramatically and Tom is faced with a devastating choice which, either way, will lead to personal tragedy.. Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Jo Cottrell and a former colleague, David Gerrard, begin looking into the circumstances that led to this situation and uncover unexpected liaisons which raise a number of questions…

Fame, drama, love, sex, romance, passion, lust, heartache, and work consume their lives. They learn that their dream-life is nothing without love, so they jump through hoops trying to find the right man. Superstar singer Rita James and fashion mogul Diana Vise search the ends of the earth trying to find love. Through all of the heartache and disappoint they refuse to give up. As they chase their dreams and enjoy their extravagant lives, they realize that money and fame cannot fill the void in their heart. Rita appears on the Raven Style's show. Raven has many questions for Rita, so she tries to ask as many as she can. "Rita James, there is so much to talk about and so many questions I want to ask you." Raven said. "Go ahead, I'm not scared." Rita replied. "Who was this man that you were seen with on the beach?" Raven asked. "He is a special person to me. I won't say his due, out of respect for him." Rita replied. "I thought you were engaged to Tony?" Raven asked. "It's a long story. I'll tell you another day when I have the time." Rita replied. "You must stay busy juggling two men and a huge career. How do the two men feel about each other?" Raven asked. "They have never met. It was as if I had to choose between them and I could not. I came to a fork in the road and went straight. My heart was pulled in two different directions. When you are addicted to love, situations like these will drive you mad. My thoughts are spinning like lottery balls; I don't even know what my decision will be." Rita replied. "How do you maintain in your soap opera life?" Raven asked. "Shopping, sandy beaches, a lot of sunshine and my sister help me through the emotional storm. My sister supports me through the toughest times." Rita replied. "Do you ever think about seeing a psychologist?" Raven asked. "Do you think I'm crazy?" Rita asked. "No, I never said anything like that. I saw what you did to Carla May. I don't want any trouble." Raven replied. "I'm not crazy. I am just a woman who likes to stand out from the rest. I do what I want, when I want, and I dare someone to try to stop me. I only have one life to live and I am going to live it to the fullest. And if you think that I will run and hide, because I'm worried about what people think of me, then you are the one that's crazy." Rita replied. "People have said a lot of bad things about you over the years. Do you want to defend yourself?" Raven asked. "I'm not going to waste my time worrying about how other people feel. I am busy living my life and having so much fun. Life is too short for me to waste time trying to impress other people. My main concern is making myself happy. Fuck how they feel. If you think they hate me now, I'm going to give them a reason to really hate me." Rita replied. "What do you have planned?" Raven asked. "I don't plan anything. I am the queen of soul, the queen of drama, and love. I do what I want when I want." Rita replied.

The Billionaire Triplets, eight-month baby brothers, Hunter, Ryland & Marco are thrilled that their Mamma and Papa are finally getting married. On the eve of the Big Fat Spanish Wedding in Barcelona Spain, they decide to become matchmakers for their beloved nanny, their Mamma's sister, Auntie Joan when Hunter witnessed her face light up after a chance encounter with a handsome man in a café. Turns out, Marco knows who the handsome young man is.... It's Antonio Ferraro, a notorious playboy and star striker for Italy's soccer team, AC Milan. Also, Antonio is connected to their father, Julio Torres, the billionaire who's about to marry their mother. It's a perfect match - as far as the triplets are concerned, but their plans to play Cupid are turned upside down when they learn that Auntie Joan and the soccer star have a troubling history that's threatening to keep them apart. To add insult to injury - Antonio has been a very bad boy and now he's in serious deep doo-doo with some scary and dangerous men. Antonio has a gambling problem? What does that even mean? The triplets are too young to know when it's time to quit, so they decide to keep trying. They can tell that Antonio Ferraro really cares about their Auntie Joan and they've seen the way she looks at him. It's the same look that their Mamma and Papa have just before they get all kissy. (Yuck!) They want their Auntie Joan to have the same happiness that their parents have. And they recognize true love when they see it -- even if the silly adults are too stubborn to see it themselves. Book 1 - The Billionaire's Triplets Book 2 - The Billionaire's Triplets - Matchmakers Each book can be read as a standalone novel. This novel contains humor, telepathically communicating babies, a little danger and violence for the adults along with some seriously steamy intimate moments, (Our three baby's hide their heads and cover their eyes on that bit of news.) This book also touches on recovery and addiction, including spirituality, the power of prayer, 12-step programs, and redemption. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: •SHORTLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2022• •A SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE TIMES AND THE GUARDIAN• The remarkable untold story of the mercurial cycling prodigy Frank Vandenbroucke, written by William Hill award-winning author Andy McGrath. They called him God. For his grace on a bicycle, for his divine talent, for his heavenly looks. Frank Vandenbroucke had it all, and in the late Nineties he raced with dazzling speed and lived even faster. The Belgian won several of cycling's most illustrious races, including Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Paris-Nice and Ghent-Wevelgem. He was a mix of poise and panache who enthralled a generation of cycling fans. Off the bike, he only had one enemy - himself. Vandenbroucke dabbled in nocturnal party sessions mixing sleeping pills and alcohol and regularly fell out with team managers. By 1999 his team had suspended him and this proved to be the start of a long, eventful fall from grace. Depression, a drug ban, addiction, car crashes, divorce and countless court appearances subsumed his life. He threatened his wife with a gun. He tried to commit suicide twice. And when police found performance-enhancing drugs at his house, Vandenbroucke said they were for his dog. It seemed he had finally learned from his mistakes. Then, on 12 October 2009, aged just 34, Vandenbroucke was found dead in a hotel room in Senegal. Guided by exclusive contributions from his family, friends and team-mates, William Hill award-winning author Andy McGrath lays bare Vandenbroucke's chaotic, complicated life and times. God is Dead is the remarkable biography of this mercurial cycling prodigy.

Book excerpt: In 1975, after his two Godfather epics, Francis Ford Coppola went to the Philippines to film Apocalypse Now. He scrapped much of the original script, a jingoistic narrative of U.S. Special Forces winning an unwinnable war. Harvey Keitel, originally cast in the lead role, was fired and replaced by Martin Sheen, who had a heart attack. An overweight Marlon Brando, paid a huge salary, did more philosophizing than acting. It rained almost every day and a hurricane wiped out the set. The Philippine government promised the use of helicopters but diverted them at the last minute to fight communist and Muslim separatists. Coppola filmed for four years with no ending in the script. The shoot threatened to be the biggest disaster in movie history. Providing a detailed snapshot of American cinema during the Vietnam War, this book tells the story of how Apocalypse Now became one of the great films of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spending the summers growing up on my uncles' farm was, for me, an education in learning about my life on the farm. Much of my time was spent in observing how my uncles milked the cows teats and how they led them afterward out to the field to eat and rest. I watched the horses, as they too, were led to the fields where they rested after pulling the wagons filled with hay into the barn.I saw the trees which had been planted years before and had grown protecting everyone from the heat of the summer sun. And I learned to play baseball with children from nearby farms who challenged me and my friends to win. I learned about the mothers who came with their children to the country to escape the sweltering city and to gratefully breathe the country air and then to welcome their tired husbands and children's fathers on weekends.I grew up thankful for all that I experienced in those years and I remain thankful to this day, for all I have learned.
