Book excerpt: Heaven, Hell and Hoboken is a novel filled with intrigue, ethnic tensions, espionage, romance and war, set in 1916 Hoboken, New Jersey, a city known before World War I as Little Bremen. Martin Taupmann and Kurt Schneider epitomize all that is good about its residents: honesty, integrity, intelligence, courage. Yet, with the onset of the war, Martin and Kurt make choices that irrevocably change forever their lives and the lives of their loved ones. At the same time, the demographics and power structure of Hoboken is transformed: the Germans of Hoboken are the most severely impacted and lose their dominance in education, business and employment "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the experiences of a young farm boy from Schuyler County, Illinois, as he participated in the three main American campaigns of World War I, or as it was known then, the Great War. The main body of the book contains the daily entries into his diarymemoirs that he wrote later during the 1970s and my own commentaries. The diary entries are apparent because they are generally dated and presented in a distinctive typeface. Diary entries for February, March, and the first two weeks of April are written in the past tense because they were not written until the second week of April 1918. The end of the diary contains a section where amusing incidents and remarks were recorded. Most of those have been presented in the text in places that seemed to fit the situation the best (for some, it was obvious, and for some, it was just speculation). There is also a section from the diary, which is presented near the end of the book, that was undated, but it seems to have been written during December 1918.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since peoples from around the globe began to come to America, Hoboken has always been a popular destination for immigrants. People migrated from Ireland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Puerto Rico and other countries to the city, hoping to find opportunity and prosperity for themselves and their families in America. Using Hoboken as a point of entry, many ultimately chose to remain in the Mile Square City. As they struggled to establish themselves, immigrants clashed with one another and with native-born Hobokenites as they influenced the citys politics, economics, religions and customs. Author Christina A. Ziegler-McPherson explores their struggles and the complicated conflicts that have influenced the ethnic and cultural environments of this New Jersey city.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of War Letters and Behind the Lines, Andrew Carroll’s My Fellow Soldiers draws on a rich trove of both little-known and newly uncovered letters and diaries to create a marvelously vivid and moving account of the American experience in World War I, with General John Pershing featured prominently in the foreground. Andrew Carroll’s intimate portrait of General Pershing, who led all of the American troops in Europe during World War I, is a revelation. Given a military force that on the eve of its entry into the war was downright primitive compared to the European combatants, the general surmounted enormous obstacles to build an army and ultimately command millions of U.S. soldiers. But Pershing himself—often perceived as a harsh, humorless, and wooden leader—concealed inner agony from those around him: almost two years before the United States entered the war, Pershing suffered a personal tragedy so catastrophic that he almost went insane with grief and remained haunted by the loss for the rest of his life, as private and previously unpublished letters he wrote to family members now reveal. Before leaving for Europe, Pershing also had a passionate romance with George Patton’s sister, Anne. But once he was in France, Pershing fell madly in love with a young painter named Micheline Resco, whom he later married in secret. Woven throughout Pershing’s story are the experiences of a remarkable group of American men and women, both the famous and unheralded, including Harry Truman, Douglas Macarthur, William “Wild Bill” Donovan, Teddy Roosevelt, and his youngest son Quentin. The chorus of these voices, which begins with the first Americans who enlisted in the French Foreign Legion 1914 as well as those who flew with the Lafayette Escadrille, make the high stakes of this epic American saga piercingly real and demonstrates the war’s profound impact on the individuals who served—during and in the years after the conflict—with extraordinary humanity and emotional force.

Book excerpt: For a quarter century, I’ve pursued genealogical minutiae—the particulars of family compositions in the townlands of Eastern County Mayo and nineteenth century records of the Juchnewicz families of Girdziunai village in Lithuania. But genealogy is more than the obsessive collection of baptisms, marriages, and deaths. The study of family history is also the study of history. Musings traverses the sometimes grim, sometimes odd, events that occurred at the fact-jammed intersection of family history and history—a Revolutionary War massacre, the Black Tom munitions explosion in 1916, the embarkation of troops from Hoboken in World War I, the Women’s Army Corps in World War II, the lives of longshoremen in the New York harbor, and the lives of slaves on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In our time—and a step ahead of a category 4 hurricane—Musings explores the history and culture of Jacksonville and Saint Augustine. We meet memorable characters on these journeys through time—miserly German spymasters, a psychologically astute general, a luckless Polish legionnaire, groundbreaking female soldiers, two runaway slaves in a Virginia jail, and the Cazique of Poyais, sovereign of an imaginary country. And we meet two timeless characters—the banshee and Count Dracula.

Hallas uses the words of the troops themselves to describe the first days in the muddy trenches, the bloody battles for Belleau Wood, the violent clash on the Marne, the seemingly unending morass of the Argonne, and more, revealing what the doughboys saw, what they did, how they felt, and how the Great War affected them.

Book excerpt: “Moves quickly; it entertains and provides a decent overview of the life of an American Doughboy” on the Western Front during the Great War (San Francisco Book Review). The American Doughboys of World War I are often referred to as the “Lost Generation”; however, in this book, we are able to gain an intimate look at their experiences after being thrust into the center of Europe’s “Great War” and enduring some of the most grueling battles in US history. Len Fairfield, the author’s grandfather, was an Artillery Scout, or Forward Observer, for the US Army and was a firsthand witness to the war’s carnage as he endured its countless hardships, all of which are revealed here in vivid detail. His story takes the reader from a hard life in Chicago, through conscription, rigorous training in America and France, and finally to the battles which have become synonymous with the US effort in France—St. Mihiel and the Argonne Forest, the latter claiming 26,000 American lives, more than any other US battle. The American Expeditionary Forces endured a rare close-quarters visit to hell until it was sensed that the Germans were finally giving way, though fighting tooth-and-nail up to the very minute of the Armistice. This action-filled work brings the reader straight to the center of America’s costly battles in World War I, reminding us once again how great-power status often has to be earned with blood on battlefields. “All in all, this book is a bit of a gem. It is a well paced easy read and you will find yourself rooting for our hero.” —War in History
